Big Snake, anybody recognise it?

Size comparison, he's about 1.8m tall.
The bloke, the snake is bigger I think.

Hi Guys,

The snake is actually a Scrub python (Australia's largest snake).

Hi Guys,

The snake is actually a Scrub python (Australia's largest snake).

Thanks Dann,
I just identified it as a carpet from a photo I saw on the web, I had no idea really, other than it was a python.

Here's a thought, is there some sort of field guide for snakes?
I know there is one for birds.
It would help with identification, though I'll still take the approach that they are all deadly and give them a bit of distance, which is probably what they'd prefer anyway.

Hi Mate,

There are lots of guides.

The one you would want (for the Cape) would be A Field Guide to the Reptiles of Queensland by Steve Wilson.

You'll find one at your local book shop I'd say. You can't really go wrong without it. As a general rule in the Cape, stay away from anything that it straight brown. Most of the others are harmless.

Thanks Dann. Did you now that from the moment you saw it OR did you see it a few days ago and took this long to find it in a reptile book?

Obviously you know your wildlife..

We came across a few different snakes, the nasty one was a tiapan when going across Lakefield, stopped to look at it and it tried to bite my tyres, saw a childrens pthon and I thought it was a tiger snake.
A big tiapan was in our camp at virilya last month looking for a feed.

Hi Yoyo,

I study snakes in Cape York. You get to know them pretty quick.

So if guys come across a bright green snake on your travels through Iron Range/Lockerbie Scrub, post it up as any info is great.

The snake I am specifically studying is the Green python.

You might see me tripping around the area in an old (old) Landcrusier with the Cape Yorker sticker on the front.

If so, tune into channel 13 on your UHF and we'll catch-up.

Cheers,
Dan
