Hi guys,

I'm heading to the cape in June and plan on camping at the caravan park in weipa for a couple of weeks.

What are their facilities like?
I have the missus and two little ones so won't be bush camping, but i'm happy to be going so won't complain.
can you have your own fire place or do you have to share bbq spots with a heap of other campers?
I'm travelling with another family so was hoping to share a fire with them for cooking with the camp oven and so forth without walking a distance to the fire.

I will be doing day trips from weipa and using this as a base before heading to loyalty beach to do the same, I have camped at loyalty beach in 2005 and was happy with it as a camp ground so how would you compare weipa to loyalty for camping?

What places around weipa do you suggest for day trips with the family and for fishing?

thanks, Jim.

G'day Jim,

Apologies for the delayed reply. We're four days off print deadline, so things are hectic.

The caravan park facilities are fine in Weipa and they are a short walk to the shops etc. They are also situated right on the beach. I think you can have BBQs etc, but I am not totally sure. You can give Maree or Colin a call to double check if you would like to set your mind at ease.
The number there is (07)4069 7871.

The park area will still be nice and green by the time June comes around. But be prepared to be sharing the camp grounds will a ton of other travellers. As every man and his dog is up here for that time of year.

Even with the missus and kids I wouldn't right off the bush camping thing though.

Here's a tip:

Camping with facilities - Musgrave Telegraph Station has a camp area with super clean toilets, showers etc.

So does the Archer River. But in saying that, I would be recommending that you set up a camp on the sand at the river itself. I'm sure you can pay 2 or 3 bucks to use the showers and toilet if you want.

Merluna Station between Archer River and Weipa has some overnight accommodation and a camp area - also has showers and toilets. Michelle and Cameron and their Kids will make you feel at home, plus there are the usual station experiences to check out. http://www.merlunastation.com

You can camp at Stones Crossing just north of Weipa, on the Wenlock. You can also ask the locals about camping in other areas on the Wenlock. Someone should be able to give you directions to the sandy stretches of IWS... which is the Inland (?) Water Supply.

Pennyfather is also a very popular bush camp area for locals - this beach is huge - no facilities.

Heading up to the tip you can stop in at Moreton Telegrath Station - Jim and Sue will look after you there. http://www.moretonstation.com.au/

Further along you will find another station stay/camp are with facilites - Bramwell Station. Wendy has several cabins and a camp area. She also has another establishment - a Roadhouse further along the road at the junction to the OTL.

Heading to the tip, you should be going up the OTL - the camp areas are numerous around the many creeks. Water is clear etc. No facilities.

Once up the tip you said you'll be choosing Loyalty. I haven't stayed there personally so am unsure about the comparrison to Weipa.

As for fishing day trips around Weipa and the tip - I'll see if I can get Anthony to log-on and tell you. Anthony is the editor of Cape Yorker, as well as the North Queensland Fish and Boat editor - he's also an all round fishing nut. If you can't get a decent spot through him you won't get it from anyone.

Hope this helps?

thanks for the reply :)

think i'll order a mag should be very helpfull.

at this stage we plan to spend a week at weipa then a few nights at bramwell junction or station, then to loyalty beach.
the family i'm travelling with have a huge tent that is not for setting up daily so plan to check out twin falls and so forth while at bramwells before heading up so we don't have to rush past the otl and miss it all, we can spend a couple of days playing on the track and swimming.
also the mate is towing a boat so we can leave it at camp.
