G'day Troopy Al, welcome to the forum.
You'll enjoy the trip, it is a must see destination.

As for the school hols, the nearest I can figure is:-
QLD = June 24 to July 11 incl.
NSW = July 1 to July 18 incl.
NT = June 24 to July 25 incl.

They're the dates I'm working to anyway.

Hey Troopy Al,

Are you planning on tripping up there during the school holidays, or trying to avoid them??

I've just returned from a family holiday during school holidays.....never again !!!

I've never seen so many people travelling through the Cape, I've never seen so many stupid people driving at break-neck speed giving no consideration to other road users, I've never seen so many thoughless campers leaving so much crap (literally) all over the place,& I've never seen so little respect for the environment. I will post comment on each of these issues over the next few days.

Whilst I am already planning our next trip up there in 2012, I will NEVER go up there again during school holidays. It takes all the gloss off the place.

No wonder areas are slowly but surely being locked up to access.

Cheers

Scorcher

gday all,

funny thing ey!!??.... with regard to what scorcher is saying.....10 yrs ago, 80% tents/swag, 20% camper trailers. today 80% camper trailer, 10% swag, 10% caravan. what lies ahead??

i could say several more things after 39 days straight on the water with tourists....but i'll refrain!

thankfully 95% are human!!

5 mths to go?!

cheers,
BAT

Have to agree with Scorchers comments some people act like pigs, sorry pigs, worse than pigs! Cleaning up after others toilet paper is not pleasant, just how hard is it for them to bury or burn it, and avoiding the stupidity on the roads is a concentrated effort.

We (3 blokes) did that trip last year but went via the Simpson Desert, we did it comfortably even taking some time to explore spots that weren't on the itinerary (got geographically challenged) and had a ball. We were stopped at around 3pm each day for the obligatory beer and swag roll out sessions. Fantastic place.

Must Do's:
Mt Dare - Couple of nice cold Cooper Ales
Karumba Point - Barra & Chips,
Archer River Roadhouse - Archer Burger
Hughendon has a great butcher near the IGA
Parachilna - The Lot - Camel Emu & Kangaroo

About a month, when we go back we will be planning a longer time up there instead of doing the Simpson. I do a Bi-Annual Birdsville trip, this takes a 10 hour day from Adelaide leaving at around 3am we get there for 3PM only stopping for fuel, food, toilet break & leg stretch at Lyndhurst ( I have a long range tank).

I have roughly calculated that given this one long day followed by a couple of shorter days could put us in reach of the bottom of the Cape leaving us 3 weeks in the Cape with a few days to get back without busting a gut.

I'd be interested in seeing what you plan & do.

Well looks like we are going to leave around the 14 of June and returning to hervey bay on the 15th of July.

Few questions...

What are the camp grounds going to be like?
Are the roads going to be packed with D*ckhead drivers?
Is it worth putting it off later?
I dont want to waste 000's of dollars on a trip that could be riddled with d*ckheads and lots of ppl.

Busy, depending on where you go of course.
Obviously the more popular places will be the busiest.

Are the roads going to be packed with D*ckhead drivers?
Don't know about packed, but they're always around, no matter when or where you go.
Though honestly, I think most are up there for the same reason, to have a look around and enjoy the place.
It only takes one to spoil a holiday, and this can happen at any time.

Is it worth putting it off later?
Possibly.

I dont want to waste 000's of dollars on a trip that could be riddled with d*ckheads and lots of ppl.

G'day ML-VR08,

It's an unfortunate fact that the time you intend travelling is the busiest on the Cape.
Funnily enough, that is around the time I intend on being up (across) that way next year as well.

Comments above.

We are locked into those dates because of various work commitments, and cannot get any other time off. So have to make the most of it. Just hope it doesnt spoil the trip and put us off ever going back. Id hate to get to say seisia only to have all the camp grounds booked out same with punsand bay and vrilya...

I'd suggest pre-booking at Seisia or Punsand, they will accept bookings.

My previous trips to the Cape have been during Aug and Oct, few ppl around then.
Straight after the hol's I don't know for sure, but imagine it would get quieter fairly quickly.

Mate, you shouldn't have a problem. Sometimes travelling alone is a little easier.
