With a few of our regulars living up there, and a fair few travellers now on the road, I thought it might be good to post a few fishing reports & brag photo's.

My fishing mate is at Cullen Point ant the moment and seems to be doing OK with Mackeral and a few Barra.

Went fishing late yesterday arvo and got back home this afternoon. We fished a couple of holes up around the Tip area with not much success with only a couple of legal Nannygai and Sweetlip coming aboard. This morning saw us fishing off Fly Point where there were plenty of fish with only one boated which was a queenfish coming in at 1.3mt. We could see plenty of big fish on the sounder but once hooking up the sharks would come in. We have had a good spell of weather up here over the last couple of days but this afternoon the wind started coming up.

Not that I am currently based in Cape York but I ducked out yesterday morning and managed 9 species on fly and was back before lunch. Nice to be back.
Went for a drive today and walked out on a rocky headland and our group managed 7 muddies off the rocks......

Geeze Ant, your making me jealous. Its been a few months since i had a good feed of muddies.

I just finished 5 day charter we got 256 fish inthat time {catch and release}
and one of the blokes was useing 2 kg line ! 32 species
with the weather still warm the barra are still going off as well
Macks every where , Tuna are off and on theres a large tuna boat working the area!!:(

How much longer do you expect to be living over there?

Also, any photo's of the Wenlock River trip that you can post, or do we have to wait for the next magazine with baited breath....?

19 day's before I head up the the Cape.....so much to do, so little time !

We fished a few spots during our recent trip up north.

Firstly, we headed out to Bathurst Heads, somewhere that we had never previously visited. A few of the other groups camping up there were picking up the odd Barra & Salmon at night time on live bait near the rocks, but reports were that the tides at the time had seen things go quiet. The place was alive with muddies though, particularly off the shore at night. You just need to sort your way through all the females !

We headed up and spent 6 day's at Vrilya Point. Man was that place crowded ! We fished the Cotterill River most mornings, picking up a few small Barra, and a mixture of Queenies, Trevally and Mangrove Jack. Overall though, fishing was VERY quiet, with little being caught in the river. Most other groups said that both fish & crabs were scarce.

Not far offshore, the Tuna (and other species) were working the bait schools with vigour. Despite plenty of hookups, we were hammered time & time again by some pretty big sharks, which was both exciting and a reality check, especially when sitting in a 12 ft tinny ! My lure collection took a massive hit this year !

We still managed to catch (and mostly release) a number of Spotted Mackeral, but got busted off by some much bigger toothy species. Seeing a caught Tuna (about 6-8kg) jumping clear of the water followed through the air by an 8ft shark will be something that I won't forget too quickly.....pity I didn't get any footage of it !

My next trip is planned for Aug/Sep 2012, so it will be interesting trying a different time of the year for a change.
