Have just come across this book in the library here in Cairns and have found it was an interesting read.
It follows the travels of an intrepid South African man trying to overcome some of lifes hardships and his unlikely female English travel companion who also has her issues. They meet at a Cairns backpackers and decide to travel the Cape together and build up a good friendship while on their 10 week journey all over the Cape.
Not exactly a reference book but well worth the read.

In what year did they do their trip?

The author doesn't actually tell you what year they went but the book was first published in 1997. So I assume it was early to mid 90's.
