Wowww just finished reading the rivers of gold and what a read...
Them palmer fields and all the way back to Laura and Cooktown would make the yanks wild west look like child play...enough to put a person of eating Chinese...
Fantastic stuff and the book must be a "must read"before visiting Maytown and area..
I now know why you are hooked on Maytown Les...

Yeah, once I'd read the book it was at the top of my MUST SEE destinations.
It's amazing to see just how much of an impact that gold rush had on the area, we stopped at the Chinese Temple at Atherton on the way south, it exists because of the Chinese exodus from Maytown.
Even Cooktown owes a lot to that gold rush, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Cooktown Museum.
Unfortunately we were too late in the day to talk to anyone at the Historical Society.

Look forward to my next visit to Maytown.
