Hi Guys,

Wondering what fishing outfit we should take to the cape, It's mainly a sightseeing trip but we will have a chance to fish from the beach at Loyalty Beach and surrounds, the Seisa Jetty and Captain Billy Landing.

I have a couple rods at home which might be suitable one (about 6ft) with a Shimano TLD 25 might be good on the jetty.

The other rod (about 7 feet and softer) could cast a lure but has no reel.

What would be the best outfit/s for us.

Regards
Geoff

your TLD will be OK from the jetty if you plan to float out livies under a balloon but you will need at least 50lb line and 100lb wire trace otherwise use 100lb handline with 100lb wire trace and leave the TLD at home..for the beaches a good spin rod and reel with again at least 50 lb line and a good drag system as you never know what you may catch from the beach

Sorry for the late reply Geoff. Only just come across this post.

Your TLD 25 should be fine but i wouls load it with about 50lb braid. Make sure you carry some good 100lb leader. I have found that Penn 3X is pretty good stuff while being cheap. What sort of rod do you have for this?

As Porker said, a 100lb handline wouldnt go astray either. I personally would not put wire trace on it though because of you hook up to a shark you dont want to be fighting him for ages without the line breaking. You will find that just the 100lb line by itself will be more than adequate for any of the more toothier fish species.

In regards to your other rod, how many kg's is it?

A good allrounder would be a 10-15kg stick with a Penn Slammer loaded with 30lb braid. This could be used for your fishing off Loyalty or around the jetty at Seisia.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll take a 100lb handline for the jetty, and leave the heavy rod at home.

I'll buy a decent spin reel for the the 7ft rod, which is an Ugly Stik GB1706 and see if it casts a lure ok.

I bought a nice expensive graphite rod once but broke the tip, so a tough old ugly stik might be a safe bet and save me a world of hurt.

Hi Geoff,

Just had a look at your rod details on the net. Looks ok. The only thing i would be carefull of if your going to be using more than 30lb line on the matching reel is the rod is only rated to 6-9.5kg. Just be carefull not to high stick the rod and you should be fine.

The lure weight class looks good as well at 24-100g as you wouldnt want to be tossing lures heavier than this anyway.

End of the day you cant really go past an Ugly Stick if your worried about bashing it around a bit.

another good reel would be a shimano 4500 baitrunner.
not the best for continued lure chucking being a bit heavy but a good real for bait fishing and can handle a bit of tough stuff.
i have used them for years up north and never had a problem. cheers

Thanks guys, I've used smaller shimanos in the past and found them to be a good reel, so I'll look at a bigger Shimano for this rod.

I picked up a cheap Penn Spinfisher 850 baitcaster 7', 10 - 15kg heavy action combo with a 760L reel along with a large handline at the Tinnie & Tackle show in Bris on Friday morning.
Any suggestions what line to load on the? Was looking at maybe 30 to 30lb for the rod and 80 to 100lb for the handline. Need some local advice!

Glen,
I am confused!
From memory, the Penn Spinfisher 850 is a threadline reel not a baitcaster.
The 760L is also a threadline reel.

Did you buy two threadline reels or was one of the model numbers you quoted for a rod?

Either way, a threadline reel spooled with 30lb will cover most general applications up in the Cape.

The handline with 100lb will stop most things. You may want to consider a wire trace of sorts if you plan on playing with sharks off the beach though.

Hi Loxsmith,

I bought a 750 spinfishers from BCF for $99. Bit heavy but seems pretty tough. Hope to give it a test up the Cape.

I think 850 is the rod and 760L is the reel. The hand line is just an Alvey plastic job around 8" or 10" dia. As you may have guessed I am not a regular fisher so my descriptions maybe RS!
I will buy a couple of lures down here and get some more from the locals at Cape York Bait & Tackle shop when I get up there.

I also grabbed a couple of oyster picks that will keep me amused for hours!
