I have just returned after a glorious trip (our first but by no means our last) trip to the Cape.
We loved every minute of it. A hearty thanks to all who offered suggestions to occupy us while we waited for the water pump in Weipa, I am very glad I repaired it as the rest of the trip (5400km) was trouble free.

Anyway here are the first couple of snaps:

Hi mate,

Thanks for posting these pics! I leave from Cairns 3 weeks today (Monday) and its great to see some recent pics. IF you dont mind me asking, how were the roads up there? Corrugations getting pretty bad I expect? Also, how were the creek crossings? Any that are still pretty deep or are they all quite low?

Hi Chris,

The roads are in good condition, the bypass roads were the worst. We had a good run back, left Bamaga about 10:00am and set up camp at Coen at 4:30 in time for a couple of cold ones and a nice camfire stew. We left Coen at 8:00am and arrived at the Lions Den at 4:00pm after doing Battle Camp Stopped at old Laura and did a shop at Cooktown and a quick tour to Green Hill and the Museum. So the roads are quite drivable. (No more than 80kmph though). The corrogations were reasonable, like I said drivable. I dropped my tyre pressures down from 45psi back to 30 and that made a huge difference.

The creek crossings on the OTL are all down, only a few horror stories coming about Nolans we opted out at Mistake Creek wasn't going to risk the car.

Just take the time to enjoy it and walk each crossing. Most dangerous one we did was Cockatoo ck some very deep holes.

Bst fun I have had for years

Dave

Thanks for the info Dave. Can't wait for this now and suspect it'll be the first of many Cape York trips even though I do live in the UK!!!
