Mainly for the locals up there, what tyres seem to be the worst , fail more than others in your opinion.

I have only really used BFG AT's up until May this year when i switched over to Mickey T Baja's. The BFG's are cheaper and are more than adequate. I also love the MT's and find they have excellant traction in the soft stuff. The only negative i found was that they chipped a little when rock crawling.

At present I'm running BFG's muds 33 x 12.5 x 15 but looking to run Cooper STT's in 32 x 11.5 x 15. Use to run Cooper STT in 31's then went to the BFG's but not that happy compared to the Coopers.
Just that I had heard Coopers seem to fail more up that way and just wanted to see if any locals up that way could confirm or had any tyre they stay away from.

When i first bought my cruiser, it had Cooper STT's. I went to Eliot Falls for the weekend at the end of the wet season and did a bit of 4wding. Was not happy with them what-so-ever. No traction in the soft stuff.

I was speaking to the tyre fitters to day about that ,just got a 100 series
Its running BFGs ATS 265 HALF TREAD want to go to 285s BFG muds i ran them when i was doing remote catering only got good things to say about them.
Any way the fitter was saying that cooper don't last up here when they get cuts in the side walls water gets in and make it separate he said they take heaps to the Dump !
He said MICKEY T was hes 1st choice then BFGs as he sees whats works and what doesn't I will be fitting 1 of Brands he suggested
Tyres will last longer if you run the wright pressures up here as well !

I've got mixed feelings about the MTZ (Mickey Thompson Baja). We stuffed 2 on pretty easy roads, one was just before Weipa and the other on one of the bypass roads. Looks like the same problem on both tyres with a couple of lugs ripped out and subsequent holed sidewall. Tyres where 265/70/r17 running 32psi at weipa and 28 on bypass road. I'm thinks of giving some Goodyear MTR's a crack. At least I can get a warranty with these. With the mtz bought five before the trip and with less that 2months and 6000ks only have 3 remaining.
My previous set (of mtz's) where 275/65/r16s and couldn't rate them highly enough. Did a heap of offroading with them including a huge 10000k trip Kimberley trip with only one puncture (ripped sidewall) in some 30000ks that I had them.
I've said it before and I will say it again. If I want info on tyres I go to one person. Ross at Cairns Tyres. He is an owner/operator who has been in the tyre business since Moses was a lad. Ross won't beat around the bush.
For the record, I used to run with big brand name tyres. Since then, my last set were Hercules Terra Tracks which I replaced after 60000k and they still had another Cape trip left in them. In the whole time I was running these tyres I never had a puncture or any other issues with them.
I am now running a brand that Ross has recommended called Wild Spirit. These new tyres are a special import that Ross is bringing into the country on his own. I have only recently put them on and can only comment on the sealed roads so far.
I will be spending time in the Cape (October 3 to November 14) and will have some feedback on them after this trip.
Jim, you are dead right regarding tyre pressures. The correct pressure (and this varies depending on the vehicle and weight, etc) is critical for good tyre wear and tear.

Just returned from the Cape driving on Goodyear Wrangler Silent armour (AT)
and found them excellent in all the conditions up there including the Telegraph track and a lot of Ks on private property.
