We were planning on going to Norman Creek in Aurukun next year for a 2 week stay.
Got the camping and permit costs for 2 vehicles, 2 boats and 6 adults.for 14 days. Work it out its frightening.
Looks like Virilya or Samoa again.

Campdog,
Maybe the 2010 Tag-A-Long is a better idea for you.
Or, possibly the houseboat from Weipa, so you can still get to Norman by tender and fish the area.

Yes John,

As we discussed on the False Pera Head thread (Norman Creek), it appears that they are doing their best to keep people out of there with those prices.

Vrilya Point is always a good option.

Have you considered trying around Kowanyama & Pormpuraaw ? We are currently looking at that as an alternative. Doing some research now, as it has been 10-15 years since we visited there. I understand that the stricter alcohol restrictions in both places have reduced the amount of visitors these two areas receive now.

Also the Skarden River may be worthwhile looking into.

Mate that is a joke. I fully appreciate that we camp on their land, but this is a total mismanagement of resource. Surely it would be in their interests (and the governments) to create a managable tourism market that would bring income into the community. I don't actually mind paying money to access land to camp in a remote location, but the prices quoted are a bit exorbitant.

I guess you just have to pay extra for 1 million star accomodation ;)

Houseboat sounds like a better idea to me. If the fishing is off you can go elsewhere.

Does the AMP still apply to the people on the water?

The restictions are in force on land only which is from the high water mark.

You can have however much alcohol you want in your boat providing it is not touching shore.

expensive...absolutely,

why is the cape still as good as it is???

it's not supposed to be easy. that's why not everyone lives there.

G'day Yetti,

I think that the issue here is the price of the permits compared to permits to visit other areas within the Cape.

Other remote places that I have been looking at visiting on the Cape charge nowhere near what the Aurukun Council are charging. The only ones that come close are a couple of properties that are charging like a wounded bull just so that you can go in to cull some of their feral animals !

Its like Scorcher says, its nothing to do with the cost of living on the Cape but the cost of permits to visit certain areas compared to others. people dont mind paying for permits its just the thought of being ripped off.I just $160 a night a bit rich for 2 people and a boat to camp in the bush.If these prices were everywhere across the Cape then no one would live there as the tourist dollar would go elsewhere.

I find this pretty hard to believe and would be talking to someone in Aurukun directly as there may be a mistake with the wording on the form. Surely, the Aurukun Shire would understand that the current rates on the form would actually lock people out of visiting the area, or even put people in the position that they would try to 'sneak' in without applying for a permit.
I will try and get in contact with the shire and see if there is a response.

Okay,
Just got off the phone with one of my contacts in Aurukun. They are looking into it and I will have an answer by Thursday this week (27th of August).
From my understanding the Entry Fee ($50.00 per person) is only a one off fee, but I will know for sure later this week. If this is the case, the online form will be changed.

Good work Ant. I'll be interested in the outcome.

If this was the case Ant it would be on par with Janie Creek at Mapoon.
Hope your right.

Yes the cost is $90.00 NIGHT a mate just got back from the Love River and that is what he was charged
Be aware that it was going around that some weipa locals went to the love and didn't get a permit and got back from a days fishing to find there camp was gone . Rangers had taken it (food water every thing )
This is a rumor I am trying to confirm as this is putting people's safety at risk
I will be camping on the boat as of now for that price !! don't mind paying camp fees but not that!!

Just got confirmation. The rates on the website are as they stand. When I asked how many bookings they had, the response was "not many".

And not surprising at that rate !

Ant, perhaps we could start up a specific thread indicating daily access/permit prices for each spot on the Cape, or perhaps this will be part of the new website layout

It would be good to compare the various prices for the likes of Amban, Skarden River, Pennyfather River, Pormpuraaw etc etc. Like most, I'm happy to pay a fair rate to access property (Private, Reserves, NPWS etc), but it should also be reflected in the amount of amenities on offer - Toilets, Power, Water etc. I know that you can't replace the serenity of a great location all to yourself, but at what price?
