We are now in Cooktown and keep getting varying reports on the road to the Cape. Can some one please give us an accurate report. We are preparing for the corrogations as we know we are late in the season.
Also does anyone have any knowledge of the road to Pompuraaw? We thought we may head that way down.
We are looking forward to the next part of our journey and look forward to your reply/ies:D

We are now at Pormpuraaw and have been up to the top and back. We found the roads were fantastic we took our Bushtrackers and Chevs with no trouble at all. We had a lovely time the whole way enjoying all the cape has to offer. We loved TI and stayed over night at Horn Island.
I joined this site thinking that we would get helpful advice etc but so far nothing I cant help but say I am disappointed. Oh well thats life move on I guess.

Birchy,
Good to hear that your trip went well and that you enjoyed it.
It is unfortunate to hear of your comments in regards to feedback. I can only presume that there was not anyone at the time that was able to help with your specific requests.
I do hope that you did gain some useful knowledge from reading some of the other posts and threads though as there is a wealth of knowledge on here.

Feel free to post up some pics of your trip when you have the time.

G'day Birchy,

When you were on Horn, did you stay at the resort or the pub?
TI is a great place and well worth the cost of the ferry ticket, though I did refuse to pay the dollars in 07.

What was the road to Pormpuraaw like?
I haven't been there as yet and am planning on visiting that area on the next trip, be good to get your opinion and comments.

In the past, I've found the best source of information on the road ahead is the people travelling in the opposite direction, keeping in mind that everyones opinion of road condition will vary.
While up there last year I thought the corrugations were much less severe than the year before, however there were a lot of travellers who thought the roads were terrible.

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the trip so far, I'm sure it won't be your last to the Cape.
Where to from Pormpuraaw?

Birchy Im glad you enjoyed your trip and bet you will return.Sometimes Im glad not knowing what to expect on the next part of the Cape as everyone sees it different and may not necessary be correct. I was there a couple of years ago after the Cyclone and the National Parks people and said the roads were impassable, someone said it would destroy my 4wd on the rough road.I saw a dirty 4wd and trailer pull into town and asked where he had been. He had just come through Lakefield, the roads were open and the rivers were passable.A lot of people wouldnt go to Chile Beach because the roads were too rough, others said it was fine.
Half the fun is finding out that my trailer wasnt strong enough for the trip or that I needed a bilge pump in my Patrol.
I can remember the roads so rough I thought everything would fall apart , on the way back graded and 80ks an hour. Not knowing what to expect is part of it and the day we get sealed roads all the way to the Top we will loose that.

i find road conditions are like political opinions everyone has their version and sticks to it. its basically about what they have experienced before. I've had people tell me i'm irresponsible to go down X road then when i do it its not bad in my opinion.... the maytown track is a prime example of this!
