I pulling a few vehicles across the archer at easter last year I think and and this idiot with no snorkel went to cross and didn't tell anyone and his car died half way across. so when I lined up to pull him across out of niceness his car was facing up stream of the causeway. so I hooked the winch to him then tried to pull him out but ended up going up stream and his car rolled in the water and dissapered then I managed to winch him up to there.

I think you are being a bit harsh on yourself.
Sounds like you were trying rescue someone from there own stupidity.
If you hadn't been there he might not have seen the truck again, at least where it ended up he could see it :)
