Hi All,

This forum has proved very useful so far without a need for me to ask anything until now...

However, I have not seen anything with regards to info on permits. I believe I will not require permits to camp or travel through Lakefield NP or Iron Range NP. Other camping points could include Archer River, along the OTT (Canal Creek), The Tip, and possibly Vrylia Point.

If you can confirm, or otherwise, that I will / will not need to arrange permits or book ahead that would be great. I am travelling mid September.

Cheers,
Marc

Permits are a funny thing around here you will have to contact the local councils in the area you want to enter to get permits I think the contact details a listed around here somewhere.

Generally, the places you have listed you don't need to book ahead.

Lakefield N.P. - Self registration or book ahead.
Iron Range N.P. - Self registration.
The Tip and Vrilya Point - Permit included in cost of ferry charges across the Jardine.

There are several commercial camping options on the Tip, depending on when you are leaving (and how many of you there are) it may be beneficial to book ahead if you intend on staying at one of these..

Hope this helps.
If I've got any of it wrong I'm sure someone here will correct me.

Hi Marc,

You will need a permit to enter Lakefield NP which is obtainable from the self registration booth. The same goes for Iron Range NP. You shouldnt need to book ahead at that time of year. I cant remember exactly where it is. Others will be able ot help out on this one.

No permit is needed for the Archer River and the southern part of are OTT. . If you stay at the falls on the northern part of the OTT, you can obtain a permit from the self regisration booth in the camping area.

To camp at the Tip and Vrilya Point a permit is required. There are three private campgrounds which you have to pay for. Seisia Holiday Park, Punsand Bay Resort and Loyalty Beach Campground. The $88 you pay to cross the Jardine River ferry includes permits for both of these.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Guys, that has been very helpful.

I guess this next question maybe open to opinion but here goes...

I know it can be a mistake to fit too much in to what will only be a 2 week trip. Would you say the Jardine Ferry Crossing and visiting Vrylia point are a must do for a first trip on the Cape?

Thanks Again.

Marc

Marc,
In my opinion, if you haven't been across the Jardine, then you haven't seen all of Cape York.
To go all that way and then turn around at the Jardine is a waste.

Yes Marc,

Going across the Jardine & visiting the Tip, checking out some of the war relics around Bamage Airport & Somerset & going to Seisia warf amongst other places are a must for Trip No 1, which will ensure that there is a Trip No 2, 3 etc etc !!

Later trips will give you the chance to further explore some of the outlying areas or spend more time at your favourites !!

Cheers

My geography and map reading skills may need some work (ok a lot of work :))... It is my intention to get to the tip but I was blissfully unaware that I would have to cross the Jardine River to do so.

What about Vrylia Point?

I can't wait for this trip now... but perhaps some map reading wont go amiss over the next 50 days. :)

Cheers,
Marc

Yep, hit the maps Marc !!

Vrilya Point turnoff is south of the Jardine River, so you don't need to worry about that. For your first trip to The Cape, the $88 fee to cross the Jardine River (which covers your camping fees at Vrilya Point anyway) is well worth it !

Marc,

To go all that way and then turn around at the Jardine is a waste.

I would agree as "The Tip" is the most northerly point on the mainland and to go within approx 75km and not stand there, even if it's just to say "been there, done that" would be a waste.

56 days till I leave Sydney
60 days till I leave Cairns for the real start of the trip.
