I wonder what new forum members think when they log onto this site...
Every single post seems to say "Batesy" ... almost looks as though I'm the only fella on here. No wonder they stay away in there droves.

Batesy you are the Boss
I reckon you need to Hijack Campdog's thread off the other Forum and get him over here, sounds like, what he don't know, ait worth knowing about the Cape.( the information might be a little more reliable to.) LOL
No really Batesy, I think once a few of us have done the trip we should be able to offer some good advice about the trip to the top. I belive that this Forum will be the eyes and ear's about everthing to do with Cape. Just needs some time to get a few members with the experience of traveling, fishing, camping and rubber necking around the place.
I guess I'm not really new here anymore so I'll shut up.

Coza, I reckon you're right about Campdog...
He's got some great info for everyone on the 4wdmonthly forum. Which is exactly what it is all about. The more info people can get online the better it is for everyone.
It's nice to grab some stuff from the magazine, but things change and the forum thing is an excellent way to get the latest info - plus we're not always right!!
The problem, I think, with the cape is that everyone is too worried about what can go wrong ... the magazine world is partly to blame for this. Advertising dollars talk.
Everyone's lead to believe that you need all the 4wd equipment under the sun just to survive. You don't. It's certainly nice to have it ... but it's not essential. For instance, I don't have a winch. I don't have a camper trailer. I don't have good Spotlights ... I want them, but there things I'm saving up for. You can still enjoy travelling without them.
Although a camp trailer really would be nice!! (Calling all camp trailer manufacturers ... wanna good advertising deal in the 2008 Cape Yorker?!!) :)

I think you got it in one, from what I have read you almost need a trailer to carry all the spares and tools, I hope there wrong.
I've read stories orf guys poping coil springs, breaking leaf springs, shearing wheel studs, ripping off diff's, etc, etc, etc.
Enough to scare anyone off.
As Coza says, once a few of us have a trip under our belts we then can add our knowledge/experiences to the forum, helping to make it THE premier site for cape info.
I've got most of the recovery gear, including 2 winches, though I hope to never have to use them, it's just cheap (?) insurance really.
Like it or not, you are THE MAN at the moment.
Also, makes it easy if we need to blame anyone later :D
Just joking.

Stuff will inevitably happen on the road. Take that camp trailer in the Candid Capers section of the mag. Luckily it was a hire one, so the guys didn't feel inclined to fix it. But rollovers like that happen.
Last year a local up here had a head on smash with another vehicle whilst driving at night. One big mess and one fatality.
Two days ago a couple and their son were on their way to Weipa when a ute slammed into them from behind - on the PDR. The family were driving a Patrol Wagon and towing a new boat. The Patrol Ute hit them at 100km/h, drilled the boat into the rear of the wagon. Smashed the fridge through the rear seats - thankfully the young boy was sitting on the other side.
The Wagon was doing 10-20km/h as they were going through one of the many DIPS up here. Thankfully it didn't end in tragedy - but it certainly stuffed up the family's holiday.
ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR EVERY TRAVELLER:
SLOW DOWN FOR THE DIP SIGNS
Saves braking an axle or worse.
As for the 4wdrive stuff - the fear factor isn't so much as breaking down - because you can break down in a bog hole 50km from your garage back home. The problem is the feeling of isolation. The headache of drowning the car in some bloody creek crossing in the middle of nowhere and wondering what to do next. Or like Campdog, getting out the car to see half your trailer hanging off your towbar and half lying in the dirt - stuff like that just frustrates you because you have to stuff around trying to fix it.
Mind you, the pics provide for a great yarn. Which is part of what travelling is all about!
Oh, and Nedly ... of course you have TWO winches ... they should be standard equipment on all Patrols. :)

You know Batesy, for once I agree with you.
I let the Yota drivers use the hand winch to get themselves out and the electric winch for Patrols :)
BTW, haven't had to use the electric winch yet ;)

You don't need a winch Nedly, you usually use a TOYOTA Rav 4 to get you out of trouble, oops i forgot I wasn't supposed to mention that.

I cant believe that there is a site dedicated just to Cape York, I spend most my time looking elsewhere for information on the Cape and it was here all the time. The Cape is a great place to go and the roads are getting better every year and the time taken between destinations are getting shorter. I think the main things to do on a cape trip is be prepared, prepare you vehicle and trailer and prepare yourself for a great trip.
I think haste is the problem on this trip, the harder you go the more chance of breaking something. Take you time to enjoy the trip and look around and spend a bit of time in places you like. You cant see all the cape in 2 or 3 weeks. You need more like 2 or 3 months. My way of seeing the cape is do a trip and check the place out and pick the spots you want to see next trip and after that trip do it again. My ideal trip is travel 1 day stay 2 nights and move on and do the same again the next stop.

Yeah, thanks for that Dipmaker, that will be enough of that.
As they say, no photo, no proof.
Glad to see you found the site anyway.

He wants an appearance fee... only a few cents. But I told him there's no chance of him finding any sense amongst you lot.
I think that's the pot calling the kettle Black.

I reckon that the this Forum is great it's even better having the guys that are running it up there on location. What better way to get all the latest updates and info on such a magical place.

Unfortunately the fellas running it hardly ever get the chance to get out and enjoy the Cape. I'm sure Ant will definitely agree with me on this.
We can get you any contact number and lots of other stuff very quickly, but it's you guys who will be seeing most of the sites on your travels. Weird how most people end up taking for grantedwhat's in their backyard.

Well firstly I don't really have to bad mouth Nissans, they are almost as good as Toyotas and secondly if you really want to Know why I am called Dipmaker it is a long story and you will have to ask Nedly to explain it. BTW why are you called YOYO, is it because you don't know if you are coming or going or is it because you get yourself all tied up in knots?:)
I see you are from the Sunshine coast, I'm from Wamuran which isn't too far away, we'll have to get together for a drive one day. I'm sure Nedly would be up for it as well.
Cheers, Steve.(dipmaker)
