I want to get out to Chili Beach when we do the Cape in August, but towing a camper trailer.

What is the best track to take?

I know Frenchmans has a deep crossing on the Pascoe River, but what are the other two track crossings like?

Would the centre one marked in my attachment be suitable? Or would I need to go to the southern track in and out?

cheers,

Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

I've heard of people taking a trailer along Frenchmans with no problems, I suppose it would all depend on track conditions on the day you travel it.
The easiest route would be the main southern track.
If I was travelling by myself I would be taking the southern track.

I don't have a Hemma map in front of me at the moment, but I think the tracks marked in red, such as the one you've indicated, are private and permission is required to travel them.

The Frenchman's track that crosses at the Pascoe River is not deep especially by August; barely full wheel depth.
The problem with crossing here is that it has steep banks either side with large rocks through the crossing and on the north (west) bank. Deflated tyres, correct wheel placement and walk it before you drop into it and all should be good.

Portland Roads road (the main road) that turns off the PDR just north of Archer is an easy drive these days and will not require locking the hubs in for any of the crossings at that time of year; Wenlock River, Pascoe River and West Claudie River (twice).

If you are planning on doing the Telegraph track then you will have no worries with Frenchmans Track.

I did it a week ago with 17 vehicles and 15 with camper trailers without issue. Only one needed a snatch and that was due too driver error......

did portland roads to chilli beach yesterday, roadworks through there have cleaned it right up. dont expect a long trip. they've also tidied up the wenlock and pascoe on the portland roads.

doing the pascoe on the frenchmans in a couple of hours. reports so far is tyre depth with some sandy spots in the middle. There is some light rain here right now but not enought to effect water levels. i'll let you know when i get internet again how it was, i'll add some photo links aswell if its worthwhile

Hey tractor,
Frenchman's in 2 hours is pretty good going, back in '07 it took us longer than that with 3 vehicles, though we did take our time.
How many vehicles in your convoy?
