I have only done that stretch once in September 2005. The road then was fantastic for a dirt road and could easily travel at 100, with a standard vehicle.
Being dirt this could change from one day to the next however and should be treated as such.
We were on holidays and were happy sight seeing at 80 because it is a nice drive.
Normanton will be your last fuel stop until you get to Chillagoe if you go that way. The stretch between fuel stops is about 530 KM, and 3 gates.
Around Dunbar Homestead was 2 of the gates and a few mud puddles could be found then as they had a small amount of rain in July.
As for Dunbar, it is a working cattle station and sells nothing so forget about a coldie unless you go prepared.
The road between Dunbar and Normanton has a few cattle stations that are owned by Stanbroke Pastoral Company - I think and dont allow any access or camping except travel on the main road.
The bitumen ends about 30 KM north of Normanton, and the road from the Curry up to there will be single lane bitumen and unfenced, but you probably know that already.

From Dunbar East you follow the mighty Mitchell River into about Dimbulah. Is a good drive, shame you aren't going that way.
Since you are staying at the station maybe you might get a coldie or 2.
Fuel is your biggest concern.

I agree it is a great drive and worth the trip. Now you know what you are up against, when are you going back?
