Hi All,

Just chasing some inofrmation on the availabillity of some of the larger size tyres on the Cape. We have 4 vehicles in the party that are running 17'' wheels or bigger, some of which are short on space and looking to avoid carrying a second spare. In particular we have 1 series 3 Discovery on 18" wheels, which are also fairly low profile (285/55/18 from memory).

We are carrying tyre repair kits etc, but in the event of a totally destroyed tyre would obviously need to find a replacement

Are we going to struggle to get spares for these vehicles?

Cheers

Mat,
I would be concerned about those low profile tyres, particularly on the 18" rims. They are not going to take the corrugations too well in my opinion. What may happen is that the rims (depending on the materials) may get damaged.

Thanks Ant,

Thats a good point. The car isnt mine, but as far as I can tell it is difficult to get replacements/substitutes for the Discovery. I will have to check to confirm that the profile number is the right one, but the overall picture the numbers paint is right.

The rims are alloy, which probably makes them less prone to destrucion that steelies, but still means we need to keep an eye on them.

gday gobbo,

Mate you could be pushing your luck on the npa for spares. king chevy should be able to tell you about the weipa area.

as for alloys on corros etc...they do shatter big time when they go!

hope all goes well for you.
cheers

I would imagine the 17" and 18" rims would be hard to find up here as well as tyres to fit them as most tyres and rims are 16" and 15".

Thanks for the replies all,

I guess this is a bit of a problem with a lot of the newer 4x4's on the market now, a significant proportion of them come with larger wheels and tyres than in the past. There is always going to be a bit of a time lag between these modles being released and there being enough demand for after market spares, to justifiy remote stockits having them on hand. We are just going to have to be cautious and see what the cape throws our way.

If your near Weipa and cant find them there, your only looking at a day or two to get them up from Cairns via road transport if you need them. However, if you are up at the NPA, allow 5 days on the barge.

Thanks Geoff,

That is good to know, guess it would just mean we would need to hang around and take things easy for a day or two.
