I have had a lot of phone calls, emails and PM's about the 2009 edition and its arrival so figured I had better dedicate a thread to this.

Basically, all the content is ready to print and it is another great edition. The front cover is a little different to the last few but I think that it is going to catch a bit of attention.

There has been a hold up with print and distribution and this has been due to the current economic climate and how it has effected our advertisers and all business in general. Put simply, some major advertisers (don't want to mention specific businesses here) have pulled their advertising budgets. Some have completely cut their advertising budget until 2010!!
Even though the sales (and subscriptions) of the Cape Yorker have been increasing, I can not afford to take the gamble and go to print unless I can justify the advertising input.
I am working on generating more advertising and even as late as last week, I had an unexpected call from a business wanting to advertise (which is great news).
At this stage, I am working on a release date of July, 2009.
I would rather hold off and bring out another great issue rather than closing the doors completely.
There have been a lot of much larger National publications that have closed their doors already and I am lucky (in some ways) that I do not have a large staff to consider.
I know that this is a little late for some and I do understand that some people may not be happy. I am more than willing to refund the subscription costs if people do want to do that (just email or call me through the contact page).
I will keep you all updated on the progress through this thread.
Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

G'day Ant,

For my 2-bob's worth, I fully understand where you are coming from & support your business decision to hold off a bit. Certainly a case of "better later than NEVER !!".

I'll second that choppy,

with all the stuff you have going on, and your share of adversity, it's good to see a bloke sticking to his guns, and not lying down and giving up. Knowing you Ant itll be worth the wait.

keep up the good work fella!

cheers

Me too Ant. I can wait. Doesn't matter if it's later than usual, as long as I get it.
Cheers,
xina.

Ant, as someone once said, "the best things in life are worth waiting for".
At least I think someone said it, if not I've just made up a quotable saying :)
I'm willing to wait, and look forward to the day it arrives in the mail, whenever that might be.

Ant, after having a quick look through the 3 previous editions that turned up in the mail the other day I am more than happy to wait for the '09 edition.

If this latest edition is not cost effective it would leave a broken link in the financial chain and who needs that ??

I am impressed in the quality and quantity of the previous editions and I am also amazed you can do it for the cover price you are charging

Keep up the good work

Mag update.
Gone to print!
Low res cover image attached.
Cover price has increased. If you have already subscribed you are lucky as you will get it for the price you have paid.
Massive job- wonder why I do this.

Oh yeah- it blew out to 188 pages too!!!!!!
Could have gone bigger but had to pull up somewhere.

So how long before you are able to start sending them out.
Got a month to go before I start heading up there and need something to read on the train between Brisbane and Cairns.

It is really hard to explain. I do not think anyone (except Batesy) knows exactly what goes into each edition, particularly when it is a one man show. The magazine literally consumes you and at times (like at 2am in the morning) you just want to completely forget about it, but you can't. Alcohol does help sometimes!
The relief I feel at this stage (now it is at print) cannot be put into words, but at the same time there is still hesitation - what have I missed, what could be changed, etc, etc.

It was funny, I had a mate say to me last week "So, is this the best one that you have done?" and I really can't answer that question. Each edition is 'special' in its own way and I do not view things in that light.

At times, I just wanted to leave it and call it quits but that would mean ditching my connection to Cape York and the diverse and wonderful lifestyle, environment and people, and I can't do that.

I am really looking forward to the Tag-A-Long. I am actually spending a month and a half in Cape York so that is going to be a lot of fun.

Yes,

Enjoy the trip, try to relax, and by the time you get back, you'll be full of new ideas for next year's edition !!

Do you see the format of the new website as a replacement for the need to put out an annual production??

Scorcher,
The website will still run as an individual project alongside the mag. The ideal is that both with work well together. The beauty of the new site is that it will enable me to have more up to date info available and it will be a lot more interactive.

The mag is its own entity and can not be replaced.

As I said, they will complement each other.

The mag looks like it will be another winner Ant.

Don't worry about sending my copy in the post, save the money and I'll get it from you at Mareeba.
If you have room in your vehicle for the mag that is.

Got mine! :)

We had a public holiday yesterday (Monday) so I wasn't too impressed with waiting the extra day... felt like I had to wait another sleep for xmas.

Ant, you've done a great job. So too have all your contributors. Congrats to everyone involved with this edition. I gotta tell you, I'm a pretty tough judge when it comes to this stuff (poor old Ant knows how vocal I am). But I think this is a great achievement. The story content is unique.

Well done.

Love it all... well, except for the pic of that skinny fella standing atop his cruiser near the ant hill. Apparently that's an image of the world's wealthiest hippy. :)
