All,
Just wondering if there is an answer to the above?
Is Karumba part of "The Gulf" or "The Cape" ??
And also, on the east coast.....where does "The Cape" start from?? Cooktown or further south?
I'd be interested in your thoughts....

Scorcher, how long is a piece of string?
I think there are going to be a lot of different opinions on this topic. I have heard some say that the Cape actually doesn't really start until you hit the Jardine. Others will say that it starts around Musgrave.
I tend to like the classification that Nedly has used in the Tag-A-Long itinerary which goes something like this: "Cape York Peninsula is nominally identified as being the area North of a line drawn from Cairns to Kowanyama through Laura"
I do view Karumba as being considered part of the Gulf, and most locals in the area will also agree to that.
From the magazines point of view, I like to include areas such as Karumba as many tourists will travel from Karumba up into Cape York. We are also planning to extend the Cape Yorker content to include more of the Gulf country.
It will be interesting to hear the opinions of other forum members on this one......

You will find many people will have different ideas about this topic Scorcher. Some believe that Cairns is the starting point and then there are others as Ant said that think its starts at the Jardine River.
I personally think that the Cape starts around the Laura area. I also think of Karumba as being part of the Gulf, not the Cape.

Karumba is definately in the Gulf in my books.
I would consider Kowanyama part of the Western Cape and north also under the same name, but definately still part of the Cape.
Once you start getting into the Nassau and Staatan rivers I believe that is the Gulf.
My gripe would be when people asked me had I been to the Gulf recently. I always corrected them in saying that I had never been there but instead went to the Cape. Such a big difference. However I can no longer say that as I have been to the Gulf quite a few times in the last few years.

I've read somewhere that Mareeba has been described as 'The Gateway to the Cape', though I wouldn't consider it as being 'on' the Cape.
The best description I've found was "North of a line drawn from Cairns to Kowanyama through Laura", though I think it would be more correct to say a line from Cooktown rather than Cairns

Kowanyama to Cooktown was always deemed to be Cape York proper.
Gulf, tablelands etc below.
I grew up in Mt Carbine and I don't think many people thought that area to be true Cape York. Mt Carbine being a couple of hours from Cooktown.
