Hey everyone

this is my rig

http://www.petes-wsos.com/images/newvansmaller.jpg

We , my wife and two girls 2 and 6 want to do the cape when the kids get old enough.

My goal is to get as high up as possible with the van and tent it the rest of the way.

my 4wd is pretty well kitted out, not concerned about it at all. though wondering how far I can get the van up etc.

Though really want to do some 4wding up there to get to the spots otherwise not seen etc.

So really have no idea. but theres no hurry, im trying for may or june 2010, but my wife is thinking the year after :(

Who knows but I really want to do this run.

The van is relatively new to us. only had it a couple of months. Its got a big chassis and independent suspension. So should be ok offroad to a degree..
I want to get it on some sand and see how the toyota does pulling it through the sand to get some idea of this rigs capability or lack there off etc.

Cheers

Pete

Pete, you can leave the van at the caravan park at Mt Carbine or at Lakeland. I'd suggest Carbine as the best place though - tons of people leave their vans there. Forget taking it on the dirt road (PDR). You can do it, but it's just not worth the hassle, especially as you've already said you don't mind tenting it a bit.

You won't have any dramas with the landcruiser - can you get that thing any higher?!! :)

You're pretty much good to go ... just need to convince the missus!

I agree with batesy in the fact that you would have much more fun without the van. The travelling between the spots would be quicker and you could spend more time seeing things rather than towing something.
On top of that you can see better places too.

Last year was the first time i have seen a lot 4wd caravans come up the Cape. Its doable if you stick to the main drags but as mentioned above, if you want to explore a lot more places, leave it behind at Mt Carbine.

thanks guys, wasnt sure where Mt Carbine was

found it here ok

So just above port douglas..

We'll be spending our time.. We live on the gold coast, and will be spending 6 weeks up there.

would it be possible to drag it further up on the easier roads and then camp and then do daily drives around to explore a bit?

Or not a good idea?

Cheers

You could but i would imagine that you would want to camp at a spot for 2 days or more? If you want to take it up, ring up a couple of the roadhouses and ask them if you can leave the van there for a couple of days. That way you can do you overnighter if need be.

You will not be able to do the telegraph track, Eliot Falls, and Vrilya Point just to name a couple of the main points.

Is the Toyota 105 series an import? Is that the model that has all the extra comforts, bells and whistles?

You have a nice setup!

I have been told they are basically an 80 series with a few extras and that they are completely different than a 100 series. Is this true?

Geoff check out the Lcool Site where there is a technical section describing the difference. What I do know is the they share a lot of the same stuff on the surface however the chassis are very different the 100 has independant front suspension V8 or turbo diesel and the 105 has live axles 4.5 petrol and 4.2 diesel.

HI guys,

thanks for your interest

Mine is a 1998 LC GXL 105 series.

Different from the 100 series in that it has a solid or live front axle.

This is exactly the one I wanted.. Old skool 4.2 diesel in it.. easier to repair, no airbags, less restrictions on lift, and a live axel front. Its also got an aftermarket DTS turbo on it.

Being a GXL its got some of the nicer things inside. nothing to flash. I just added two leather dvd head rests in it last weekend for my 2 girls..

cheers

My 80 Series is a 1998 model, last of the 80's. They brought out your 105 the same year. I think Toyota beefed the suspension on the 80's of that year to meet the same specs (tow weight) as the 105 series so they could sell the old stock.

I was originally searching for the 100 series (or 105 series) between 98 and 02' knowing it was the last of the live axle front end. But then i found my 80 series with only 130 thou on the ol diesel....... Does the 105 series have the same 100 series front axle thats off a hilux? There known for busting while under load in reverse.

cannot say for sure, but they are not the biggest diff's thats for sure and are known not to be the strongest..

same a lux's especially bad in reverse..

Though same as anything. drive them accordingly and they are fine.. same with the 105 gbox's too.. not the strongest. but mines done 250k's with no probs..

My car is pretty similar to this. It's a 2000 model GXL 4.2D with an 05 electronic injection motor, (which has a performance chip fitted) a DTS turbo, 3" exhaust, etc etc. I'm thinking about fitting either diesel gas or an intercooler, one day, but right now, it moves along quite nicely.

I don't know why Toyota didn't stick with the live axle.
