Skytrans is to intorduce new ervices linking Cairns and the Northern Peninsula Area. The regional airline will begin the new services on May 18, initially offering three return flights a week before increasing this number to five.
"Skytrans has serviced manu Cape communities including Coen, Lockhart River and Aurukun for several years. After the highly successfull introduction of air services to Pomuraaw and Kowanyama in February this year, it was clear to us that there was a need for a connection to the NPA. We consulted with communities and stakeholders and upon gaining their support, worked quickly to make it happen," said Skytrans CEO Simon Wild.
"The new shedule offers more than 14,000 seats annually with flight operating daily from Monday to Friday on Dash 8 (36 seater) aircraft. Flights will depart from Cairns in the mornings on Monday's, Wednesday's while Friday's flight will depart in the afternoon to cater for the demand for workers returning to Cairns at the end of a working week. All flights will be direct, taking two hours."
"With an on-board entertainment system and refreshments available, Skytrans is confident that passengers will enjoy the journey and arrive at their destination relaxed and refreshed"
Fares start from a low $270 one way.
"More than 1000 of these tickets will be released in the first three of operation giving locals and visitors real value for money," Mr Wild said.
"We have listened to our customers and taken on-board their needs. For example, Skytrans passengers will now be able to travel with their pets who, subject to conditions, will be consigned as freight. Further, we have increased the baggage allowance by 5 kg free-of-charge for the first three months of operation, taking the total to 25kg per passenger."
Skytrans flights to the NPA depart from the Cairns Domestic Terminal and form part of a growing network of 25 destinations serviced by Skytrans throughout regional QLd. The announcement follows the recent introduction of new services by Skytrans to Kowanyama, Pompuraaw and Cooktown.
