Hi All

Have been reading through some of the post getting very excited about the prospects of fishing during our Cape Trip in May 2009. Now I am a beginner really when it comes to fishing so am trying to get as much knowledge as possible before gong. Hoping to provide the family with a few meals over the 5 weeks we are there.

Will be taking a Alvey Beach rod and a standard Shimano rod for river & estuary fishing. I guess what I would like to know is what type of lines etc to use. I currently have a small collection of lures including a Gold Bomber and will slowly get mores lures so I have a reasonable selection to try.

We will be heading from Coooktown to Cape Melville, Bathurst Head, Up to Chilli Beach, Through the OTL, Up to Seisha and of course the Tip. Back via Weipa and Vrilya Point to Captain Billys LAnding, back to cookdown and through the daintree etc

Once again any info/advice would be recommend i.e line weight that I should use in the rivers off the beach etc Lures size maybe?

Also should I be trying live bait where do you find that up there? I saw some pics of someone throwing a net out in a river for Mullet. IS that the way to go and can that be done in most river for example. Really appreciate any advice that can be given.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris,
The line weight and type and size of lures will depend on the type of rods you currently have, in particular the Shimano outfit you have mentioned.
Have a look on the rod and let us know the recommended lure and line weight.
Also- what type of reel is matched to the rod?

That makes sense. The rod is a Shimano with a line cap of (LB - YDS) 8 - 240, 10 -200, 12 - 150 which means I assume that 5kg line will be about the max? Is that correct?

Cheers

Forgot to mention that it has a Shimano FX 400FB reel. It takes 219 metres of 4kg nylon monofilament.

To put things in perspective most creek fish only swim 20-30 yards tops before they run out of puff. But if you hook a Giant Trevally which is large out on the flats, then 200 yards of line might be stretched quickly.
Most people use braid as you can fit more on and cast better. It is also more abrasive resistant. However it does cost more.
