View Full Version : what swag should i choose
i thought i had better not hijack the roof top thread.
i have decided on a swag and i would like your advice on what is good and what is crap, what do you reccomend?
here is the one i have my eye on, it is a tad expensive, but you get what you pay for.

let me know what you all think.
Eldo,
I have one that is very similar to that one but a different brand and a third of the price. I bought mine from Weipa while I was living there and have used it many times over the years. No signs of wear and great in all weather.
The only 'problem' with a swag is that they do tend to take up a little more room.
Ant,
can you remember what brand it was? dont forget Ant that prices do change over the years too, and what was once $350 might now be $550!!!

I've had mine for 20 odd years and as long as you get a good quality one it'll last for years, mine's a bit old fashoned compared to the ones around now but I've slept in the pouring rain out side of Cooma in NSW or is it the ACT but it was bloody cold outside and i was glad i had it

IIRC Ant's swag is a newer version of mine which is a Jolly Swag in the Shiralee as per the attachment. Mine is over 15 years old and has seen some harsh weather and still looks as good as the day I bought it........

swags last forever, so make sure you get one that you are comfortable with and it will keep you comfortable.
My swag cost a fortune 7 years ago but has been everywhere and is fantastic. I would have to dig deep to find the brand. Will spend a couple of nights in the Towers for the Goldfield Ashes on Australia day weekend and know I will have the best bed in the house.

Eldo,
Can't remember the brand and the swag is in storage at the moment as we are getting ready for the move to Townsville.
I think it was a brand like OzTrail or something like that. They are cheaper than some of the other brands, but for the use I have had, it has well and truly been good value. As I said, I have had it for many years and there is nothing wrong with it.
Here is a pic. Not the best but may help you out.

Geeze Ant, when you said you were moving to Townsville, i was thinking sometime within the next year. You dont mess around.:p
yeh ant i found the oztrail ones same as yours on special at a camping store for $460 and they looked pretty good, they did not have the internal pockets etc and a place for my boots and a few other things. they are normally up around the $599 mark i think. too many to choose from i reckon!!
anyway thanks for the advice guys and i will be sure to let you all know what i get.

My Swag is a basic 'Oz Trail' type. 5cm matress, quality canvas and mozzie net at top of head end. I used it up right through the dry season almost every second weekend last year. Had passing showers while sleeping and didn't get wet inside of it, although i always had a plan to climb inside of the troopy if it got torrential. The mattress tends loose support after a couple of nights but i'm 100kg so it could be better for those who are less. I almost always slept on top of the full length roofrack which could get a bit hard, soft grass or sand would be better.
When i got home i always let it air and dry proper before storing it.
It's had a hard life and it's still going strong.
i will be laying the swag out on the ground, dont have roof racks on the hilux.
i hope that the rest of you were all sleeping in swags on the ground!

Eldo,
I guess you could say that I'm a pretty well 'grounded' sort of bloke.
Always had the swag on the dirt.

Like anything eldo you get what you pay for and with so many different brands on the market it's hard weighing up all the pros and cons of it just remember if it's cheap it's usally crap, I have 3 swags one is a Panorama King single a wild country it has those bendy poles for each end and the oldest one is a jolly swag. all good swags good heavy zippers heavy duty canvas. I prefer the ones with the mesh these days especially for use in warmer area's as you can open up the canvas and let the air flow through and also keep the mozzies and creepy crawlys out.

Hi all,
I am planning my first trip to the Cape in June and was planning to use my swag on the ground as well. What precautions do I need to take to be Croc wise?

Wayne,
At that time of year, keep back from the water and don't clean fish or throw scraps near your camp.
As always, treat any water on the cape as croc country.
Probably a good idea to read the croc thread also as there are a few good ideas there.

Check out viking swags, they seem to be a pretty versatile looking bit of gear, all Aussie made in Brissy if i remember correctly.

Jolly swags are good but bout 12 of my mates all run the bourke and wills swags......... "ute swag" width of ute wheel wells is a good size. Probly equivelant to a king single or half way betwen doube and single meaning you can still get a young lass in there and get upto mischief within reason as long as she is not a big girl.... if she is or you "married up" as such the gal might prefer the double.
Excelent swags weather proof bug proof and durable...

Don't buy a swag if you are taking the cheese and kisses, she will never be happy under a canvas swag.
I had a "DB Swag" until some idiot forgot to tie it securely on the roof rack on a trip back from Fraser Island. They are also as dear as poison to buy!
I hope whoever it is who found it on the Rainbow Beach Rd is enjoying what was left of the toilet roll and is using my stubby holder to the full capacity!
I have now bought the cheapest Anaconda Biker swag that they make. All swags leak, so roll them in a cheap silver tarp and use 3 small tent pegs to stretch them out when in use. The missing peg leaves enough room to slip in under cover and ensures a dry night!
