I took the family and some friends out to Usher Point for a picnic the other day. Here are a couple of pics.

Good photos Geoff, what is the road like down to there.

Oh it looks like one of the tail lights is out on the vehicle too, if you haven't already noticed.

Yeah, i only noticed it when i got out to take the pic. Road is great cpmpared to what it used to be like. Back in 2001 it used to take 9 hours to get in from the main road. Last Sunday it took 2hr and 40mins from Bamaga. There are still a few washouts and the last 8km is all over grown but still drivable, just have to go slow. We had one storm while we were down there but the ground just soaked it up.

Just before Usher there is a turnoff that will take you north to a place called Sadd Point. From here to the Escape River is about 15km but the road is overgrown and cant be accessed however there are "talks" about opening it up again.

Imagine what it would have been like if the tag-along of 40 in Aug had gone out there.

Did you manage to wet a line?

Yeah, i would have said good luck to them trying to turn around and come back out.

We are taking 2 boats down past Usher on Saturday and will be coming back on the Thursday. Not sure where we are going to camp yet. Marchflies are bad on the mainland so we might stay out on Bushy Island. We plan on chasing crays and trout for most of the trip but will also be doing a little creek fishing for Jacks and such.

If you get half of what the gulf is getting, it should be the makings of a bumper breeding season for the estuaries and reef.
Get a few seasons in a row and you will be sick of catching 60cm barra, and trout at the reef.
Hope it rains lots.

I am expecting to be wet most of the time i am down there. Its not raining this morning but it looks like it wants to. I bought one of those lycra bodysuits so i can stay warm when on the boat and diving. Its the lead up to the full moon so there should be some fish around although the tides are not the best.

According to BOM yesterday, there is a monsoon trough on the northern side of Cooktown and heading north.

Ahh well, mother nature doesnt want me to go. Something to do with the 30kt winds, 3mt winds, tidal surges and a cyclone in the Gulf that they are expecting up this way. Will have to wait till after it calms down a little i think.
