Guy's,

Looking for advice wrt VHF Radio's. What is a good basic reliable unit (model etc) and a good aerial? Not after the best, just good bang for your buck and is DSC really worth the extra coin? I will be fitting it to a 5mtr Quintrex Hornet Trophy......

Cheers,

Teabag

Teabag,
For anything to do with marine electroinics, go and see Brian and Estelle at Brian Swinton Marine Electronics in Cairns. Give them a call on 4035 5311

They are great people and will give you the right advice first time.

Teabag,

They all do the job that's required. You do not need anything extreme because you do not want to here that over the sea japanese speech unless you can understand it.

Maybe get one with open scan, you may be lucky enough to get updates of where the fish are biting, who's caught what, or maybe something unusual has just been reported. It can be interesting hearing what people yarn about.

I'd recommend something with a good warranty if you are planning to mount it at the front of the boat where it will cop a good pounding from the chop.

maybe go into where Ant recommends and suggest a list of things like this above.

G'Day Teabag,

I am using a Navman 7000 on my rig and cant fault it. Last Wednesday i even contacted Coast Watch with it to report an Indonesian fishing vessel. It did really well and i was constantly using it as we had three boats in use.

Actually now that you mention it. It is a bit quiet and i was thinking about getting an enternal speaker too as the helm is near the outboards and its a bit hard to hear. Where did you get you speaker from?

I bought it a Whitworths Marine here in Cairns for about $17 odd dollars.....It just plugs straight into the jack in the rear of the radio....Works a treat.....
