Who here has fished Gibson Reef which is pretty much east (40km) out from the mouth of the Russell and Mulgrave River? What's it like and worth the trip? Any info would be greatly appreciated? Think of heading out early wed or thur morning........ :) Weather is looking very good............

Could be looking for a Deckie if anyone can get the day off?

Well, the weather man got it wrong once again....I took Wednesday off work cause the weather was looking good, 5-10kn NE so job was on....Got up early and was on the water at 4am to head out to Gibson, poked our nose out and there was no way this was 5-10 but closer to 15-20kn. We persisted until about 1/2 way out and called it quits as it was pretty uncomfortable..........As I'm sure you can guess I was one unhappy fisherman......BOM got it wrong again...........:-(

I guess that's boating/fishing, never rel on the weatherman.........

How's the tinny going?
What's your positives and negatives so far?

At present I'm pretty happy with it and for the style of boat it rides bad weather pretty well considering. Not a wet boat if you know what I mean. I also think and 80hp 4 stroke would be a little better behind it though still does 30knots which is fine. My one big gripe is the transom. It is cut away and in a sea it easily fills up with water but then again it isn't designed for open water work.....I may consider filling in the transom and put a bigger long leg motor on? I love the deck space and room to move and is great for lure fishing though a Electric motor would be a great addition for that at a later date......Oh, the previous owner wasn't very efficient with the electrics so I will need to re-wire at a later date......All in all, very happy........My next trip will more than likely be down the Russel River, looks like great country.........

The Russell/Mulgrave river systems can get shallow in places. Also dont go during public holidays or the likes as they do get fairly busy, especially the huts down the front.

Very picturesque though.

As for electrics, definately if you can afford one get a bow mount. They are at least twice as good as the others with the advantage of foot controls and some have a compass enabling auto pilot feature. Better for lure fishing IMO.

Hi Teabag,
Have you considered a Centre Console? We had a 16ft.Quintrex, with a Centre Console. Had a small auxilliery on the transome. Didn't have it filled in, so it could be a worry sometimes going to and fro between Temple Bay and Portland Roads every fortnight.
It doesn't take up too much room. We still used to be able to fit large Gas bottles, 44's of Fuel etc., without any problems.
Cheers,
xina.

Yes, I know what you mean about shallow in places......We launched at Deeral on our way out to try and go to Gibson Reef and didn't hit bottom but was very shallow in places on the sounder.....Looks like great country though......

When it comes to electrics, there are two models in my opinion.
If you want to pay the extra money, go for Motor Guide. If you want to save a few bucks and still get a good motor then look at the Jarvis Walker models.
