I thought it best that we all introduce ourselves properly over the board - kinda like the info on the profile page that I was too lazy to fill out!
Feel free to say g'day on this thread...
I'll take the honours:
I am Batesy - 'Boss of the board'. The fella with his finger on the delete button. So beware you southern rabble.
I live in Weipa with my wife and kiddy. I've been a part-time stay-at-home Dad for several months and a part-time magazine-maker type person.
I like four-wheel-driving, fishing when the fish are biting and romantic walks on the beach ... with the dog.
My dream is to retire next week. This has been my dream for many years, and sadly seems to be somewhat unattainable.
In previous lives I have driven taxis, worked in the mine, been on the dole and even once worked for channel 7 writing a stupid show called 'Always Greener'.
I also like rum.
Hi, my name is Ant and I am an alcoholic.
Whoops, wrong forum. DELETE, DELETE, DELETE..................
On a more serious note....
My real name is Anthony. At present, I work four jobs.
First: Education, which has taken me to all sorts of places in remote Queensland (fishing is always close by though).
Second: Editor for Cape Yorker
Third: Editor and Layout for NQ Fish and Boat.
Fourth: NQ Distribution for Salt-x products and Bi-Tron.
I have been living in remote areas (including Palm Island, Weipa) for the past ten years and have now only just moved to Cairns due to my wifes work and quite honestly it is killing me. I am used to walking 5 minutes down the road and hooking into barra, threadfin salmon, etc.
The move to Cairns has 'forced my hand' to work harder in front of the computer as there is nothing else to do (did I mention drinking??).
Back to business: I am a qualified Freelance Sports PhotoJournalist and love all things to do with the outdoors (fishing, camping, 4wd, bushwalking, getting bitten by snakes, chasing crocs, etc). I love photography as well.
Stats: Married, no children, 3 dogs, 2 cats (crab pot bait), 1 sulphur crested cockatoo that swears, 2 boats, over 90 fishing rods, Tojo 4.2lt turbo diesel.
Hates: impatient drivers, bad weather, traffic lights, cold water, busy boat ramps, boring people, mess, watching tv, and folding fitted sheets!!!!!
Gee, I feel like I have bared my soul.
batesy
09-05-2007, 08:37 PM
Folding fitted sheets ... yep, I hear ya.
Fourth: NQ Distribution for Salt-x products and Bi-Tron.
Talk about shameless plug ... I'm surprised you didn't push harder for a product review in the mag!

Batesy, Ant, how the hell are you? Geez you blokes have the life of Riley! Well I hear his isnt bad , he's due up there soon too.
I guess your about to be unindated with visitors to your end of the world.
Im one of many, Im scratcha, a supervisor with the crowd that has been reported as having dodgy trains in melb. Im a ex diesel mechanic, married with two lads, one of whom is coming with us to the cape in early july.
I have been up the cape only once before with Roy Kunda and crew as a customer with Cape york motorcycles. Unbelievable trip. Just too fast to really experience the area.
When Dad & mum retired and made plans to travel around oz, I questioned if he would do the cape and he said " If you go, Ill go". All the excuse I needed.
So we wil see you end of the world again in .......well 52 days till we plan to hit Cairns.....45 days till we leave Melbourne....38 days till I go on holidays and do all the last minute thing for the trip.
But who's counting

Welcome aboard Scratcha...
Glad to see you're heading back up this way. Definitely a different trip to the one you had with Roy Kunda. You won't be anywhere near as saddle sore. Though I have heard that the bike trips are a blast.
It also sounds like you've got a bad case of clock watching happening there too, mate. Maybe you need a job like mine - up at the crack of noon, drive the missus to work, hassle Ant over the phone about having 4 jobs...
There are sacrifices of course ... I have to live in the Cape. :)

G'day All,
Name's Les and I currently reside in Brisbane.
Married with 3 boys, luckily the boys are all old enough to look after themselves and are in Sydney.
We have 2 vehicles:-
No.1 is a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder with some mod's, has been to some places I didn't think you would get a Pathy, has the scars to prove it.
No.2 is a 2002 Nissan Patrol Cab-Chassis TD4.2, leaf spring. Bought this truck late last year (ex-Telstra) and am very happy with it.
(Nissan, when you're on to a good thing, stick to it.)
We are members of a local 4WD club and have been members of two 4WD clubs in Sydney in the past.
Most of our driving in Qld has been limited to 4WD parks, though we have been to Mt. Mee and Glass House Mountains.
We haven't been to the Cape before, so am seriously looking forward to our trip later this year (75 days to go). I'm sure it won't be our last up that way.
We will be travelling in the company of 2 other vehicles.
Likes:-
Fishing, company of good friends, bush camping, BBQ's, 4WD'ing, an occasional ale :) , life.
Dis-likes:-
Cats, hangovers, having to work, cats, flat tyres, trying to fold one of those spring loaded shower tents, ...... did I mention cats?
Howdy All

Have done several trips to the cape over the years, with our 1st trip in 89. Last few years have been going to the NT. Hope to do a quick trip up the cape this Sep school hols with the new campomatic.

Leave here on the 1/6, spend the night at Lakeland then off to Weipa camp grounds for about 4 nights, (this is where i meet up with my mate who is towing his boat up there now.
Then across to Bramwells junction for a few nights, here we plan to have a play on the OTL before towing the boat up the bypass track to Loyalty Beach.
We will set up camp here for about a week and do day trips around the top and some fishing.
Then make our way back down to Cooktown for a couple of nights before heading home.

Sounds like a great trip. hey Batesy, without us Burdekin mob, you fellas wouldn't survive. It's us bringing home fish every arv into the camp that gets those southerners all excited. Up at the Roper River in NT, we had to start filleting our barra out on the boat, otherwise we would be mobbed every arv. did you get my email for the subscription

Gday Campdog,
Mate you try to get away from me and my million and one questions but guess what I'm here too.
This site need a few of your special photos. (don't double up with 4wd monthly site as I have both sites open and am always scanning for new posts) I know you have thousands of photos so jazz up this site up a bit.
Thanks.
P.S BATESY and ANT are nice blokes but poor bugger are a little bit bewildered as they think cruisers are better than Patrols. Funny thing is it seams that most of the new members on this site are patrol owners.
They have some good advice but you just have to filter out the BullS#@t

I've just realised that this thread existed otherwise I would have replied earlier. Anyway here goes, my name is Steve and I am one of the group doing the Cape trip with Nedly. I have lived at Wamuran in S.E Queensland for the last eigteen years employed in the dairy industry but spent thirteen years in Cairns previous to that where I worked for Michna's Towing Service. Before that I worked on a cane farm at Ayr and married the bosses daughter and we now have three adult offspring who think they are boomerangs and keep coming back home to live. I drive a Hilux with all the usual junk like lockers and winch etc. I have driven to the Cape before but it was a work trip and over twenty years ago I think this trip will be a lot different.

New to the forum and off to the Cape in a couple of weeks. I'm driving a "03" SR5 Hilux that has a few goodies bolted on thanks to a very understanding wife who has unfortunately left our financial future in my hands.
Hope to get onto some good fishing and even better offroading on this upcoming trip so any info available will be much appreciated. I am going with a good mate who will be in his GU ute which also has all the trimmings.
Quick question, those capeyorker stickers look awesome so I am wondering how we can get our hands on a couple fairly quickly.

Welcome to the Forum Cheiffy I'm not sure how you will go getting Stickers quickly. Batesy is the man who steer's the Ship and the sticker's and he is out ,test driving a new Nissan and won't be back for a couple more weeks because he can't give the keys back, He loves the thing.
You could try and give him a ring, click on the link and Ph Chris Bates.
http://www.capeyorker.com/contact.htm

Gday cheiffy, I to will be up cape around same time as you all you need to remember is to stick to channel 13 on your UHF and WHEN (not if )you get stuck call for a real 4rby to snatch you out. All the best. Don't listen to Dipmaker, he's a nice bloke but a little bit lost in his ways, full of sh*T And bad advice. Stick close to your mate as he will be PULLING you everyday. Hope you like to get pulled
It would appear there is already a lot of pulling going on here. At least i will know that there will be some expertise up on the Cape at the same time I am there. Thanks YoYo, I know I am in good hands.

I have a FE Holden Panel wagon in my shed at home and its only 8 months older than me. So definetely prehistoric.
Both of us having big bithday party this year.
That explains it. You like Holdens and Nissans. It all becomes clearer.
By the way, when I head back up to the cape on Monday, I am travelling with another vehicle (Nissan) so i will be sure to have the camera ready wenever I have to get him out of the shit.

Talking about fitting it all in. A few years ago I took my wife and 2 daughters and had that much gear packed in the back,my mrs made me stop for a loo break before coen and left the back doors of the patrol open. we drove for 40 ks along the dirt and corragation until someone called up up on the radio at coen to tell us the doors were open.My family were complaining about the dust but i didnt take any notice, boy what a mess with all the dust in the back, the amazing thing was that everything was packed in that tight that nothing fell out.

That was my trailer, I was a bit worried when I was packing for the next cape trip 2 years later, but everything went OK except for drowning everything in Nolans Brook. If your trailer is in pretty good condition you shouldnt have any trouble.
I made a DVD of that trip and the part where the trailer broke in half I had John Williamson sing Cape York Peninsula and the bit about tin pot trailer falls in half. Have to see the funny side of things otherwise I would have gone mad.

Yeah I remember them from a while back. I thought they had moved away,
Hi Guys, my name is Gayle.(xina)
Don't know whether I'm on the right site or not but here goes.
I lived at Temple Bay on the East Coast from early '84 'till about early '86. Went from there to Portland Roads for some months, (had a stint down the coast on Night Island in a fishing camp for a few months), then down to Baffle Creek for 7 years or so. Went back to Wattle Hill on the Pascoe River on my own this time, for about 18 months, then had to come south again.
I'm in my mid sixties now and still dream of going back.
The first time I lived there, there were no 'phones, the second time ,yes.
I'm assuming you must have a reasonable medical service in Weipa by now?
Batesy, I'll be mailing you a few articles about some people on the Cape, if you want to use them. I never know which site to go to to post things, so I hope you'll eventually get this.
xina.
Wattle Hills: What a place. Been in there once a few years back and still dream of the place. That is where I want to live. Only problem is I will have to get a divorce to move there- come to think of it, thats not a bad trade off!
Welcome Xina. Looking forward to the articles so we can look at getting them into the 08 edition.
Sounds like you may have a few good stories to tell.

Love to live there someday. I met a man in Cairns a few years ago who has relatives living in that area. Hang a right turn after crossing the Pascoe when heading north from Portland Road. Would love to spend some time late November to see if the climate is for me before commiting a move.

hi, please excuse my ignorance but where is wattle hill
Tully its on the Pascoe river North West of Portland Roads.
Xina,
Yeah you still need to buy into the place with shares- last I checked it was an amount of $10,000. I actually have a mate who is also keen and we are looking at it in a more serious manner. Just need to get along to one of the meetings they have to meet the guys and talk turkey.
For anyone interested in the area, please keep in mind that it is not an area that you can just let yourself into- like most properties in the cape, you need to get permission first. The people in the Wattle Hills area are living there because they want to be there-consider what it would be like if someone drove into your back yard and started looking around- how would you react??
This is not meant to sound negative, but please respect their privacy.
Campdog- seems like we have a few things in common. First the boat trip, now the Hills..........
Oh yeah, you like (love) fishing too!!
Hi Guys,
Wattle Hill is 35,854 hectares. It has over 40 ks of Pascoe River frontage. There are, (or were,) three ways to get there. One is the long way around, through Bromley Station, but you would probably need mudmaps, unless you knew which tracks went where. The second, is through the Frenchmans' Track, and the third, is by turning off the Kennedy Road to Portland Roads, and then on the track to the Pascoe. When you cross , the original homestead is on the other side. Have any of you heard Andy Collins' Pascoe River song? He's (or was) a shareholder, and I think he mentions the Mango tree at the homestead in the song. Some of the other shareholders get a mention.
I think I left out the simplest access route. If I remember, after the Archer, there is the road going to Portland Roads/Iron Range. I think the Frenchmans' meets this road just near another turnoff to Wattle Hill. Just make sure you have enough fuel, in case you end up miles from anywhere. Not all of the shareholders are there all of the time, so it could be a while before you find anyone if you do need help at all. I'm sure you're all too experienced for that,
but I had to say it, just in case.
xina.

Xina, the boys were hoping to keep it to themselves so they can retire up there ... Wattle Hills is their version of heaven - fishing, 4wdriving, no neighbours, no traffic ... just peace and quiet.
Only problem is that the current residents at Wattle Hills probably don't want rabble like these lads anywhere near the place!!! :)
And who could blame them?!

My last family trip was 6 weeks to the Cape. It takes a bit of organising and where to put everything.Ron Moons book is just not 4wding but trip preperation as well and tips on what to thake. Well worth the time to read.
Tolinja:
If I had to plan a trip and the stops to take, it would go like this.
Leave Cairns and drive straight to Lakeland. Stop at the Coffee house and fuel up. Get coffee. Stop overnight at the Lakeland Pub (great meals and great service). total drive time: about 3 hours. This is your last piece of total sealed road.
Next day, leave and get to Musgrave (about 5 hours away). Stay overnight in either the cabins or campsite. Great food and again, great service.
Next day depends on whether you want to go into the Weipa area or not. If you want to go into the Weipa area, then the definite stop is the 'Lodge" at the campgrounds (spoil yourself). Five hours drive. If you want to bypass Weipa, then head straight to Bamaga/Seisia (about six hours). You can either stay at Resort Bamaga, the campgrounds or with Rob and Cheryl at Umagico.
From here, you can head up into the Torres Straits, stay a few days in the local area, or turn around and head home.
Each of the stops I have mentioned are no more than an easy days drive (even in a Nissan).
From experience, take as little as possible (weight plays a large part in mishaps). There are a few places on the way to the tip where you can re-stock on most goods. The extra pricing is nothing to pay in regards to the cost to cart the stuff up yourself.
I could write a whole article on this but better stop now before I get too in-depth.
Probably your biggest cartage is sleeping/camping gear. Depending on the time of year, this can really be reduced to the bear minimum.
I have gone away for more than a week with no more than a hammock and had one of the best trips too may I add!
Hope this has helped.

Hi all,
Wayne and Gwen here from the sometimes sunny gold coast.
Its been a dream for a few years now that we do the sea change thing and now all the kids have flown the coup the time is getting close.
We plan to buy a bus and fit it out, 4x4 lux and a tinnie....
Being handy with a welder im building a trailer for the lux and the boat, which will be towed along behind.
Joining this forum was to learn, pick up ideas, see how others do things when heading up the pointy end of oz..
My parents went round the block in the mid 80's in a landy and pulling an 22 foot van, i want to do the same thing but with no time frame...just working our way around seeing everything we can.
Ive been stalking you guys for a while now and figured it was time to come out of the closet.
the more i read the more i want to go,,,and the pics and stories have been great.
great forum
cheers
wayne.

Hi to everyone,
I joined the forum a week ago and have tried to read everything, (except I missed this thread)
We will be heading up in August and the car is ready to go and just deciding to get a roof top tent, or just use our old touring tent. We will drag the camper trailer up to Cairns, and leave it there for when we get back from the cape, then tour from Cairns to Mackay with the camper.
We too will be pecking the brains in this forum for ideas, experience and other info.
Just ordered Ron and Vivs book, along with the Hema map and cd rom.
Catch up again soon.
cheers
Les
G'day Wayne and Gwen,
Welcome aboard. Lets hope you have a great time getting ready for the trip and keep us all posted on your learning curve.
Look forward to hearing more and particularly once you get moving.
Don't forget to drop in and say G;day when you are in Cairns.
Les,
I don't think I have said a 'formal' hello to you either. Great posts so far.
Looks like August is going to be the month for the cape hey!

Hi Ant and a merry christmas to you.
In your post you mentioned if you didnt want to stay in wiepa head onto bamaga. Where would you suggest camping if not interested in going to wiepa on the way up?
I am thinking get to the tip quickly, then take our time working back seeing everything over 3 weeks.
How would you do it from Cairns to Umagico or Punsand?
cheers

G'day Les
There's a million and one ways to run the Cape and you'll find everyone on this forum will have their own version going on their previous trip.
Three weeks is a reasonable amount of time to tour the main track. You'll find some key destinations will continually crop up in most travellers itineraries. These include:
1. Cairns-Daintree-Cooktown (Camp at the Lion's Den Hotel or Endeavour Falls)
2. Lakefield National Park (pitch a tent at the numerous camp spots)
3. Hit the PDR (Peninsula Development Road) proper (camp at Archer River)
4. Weipa for fishing or...
5. Head North onto the OTL (Numerous Camping spots along the way.
6. The three falls - Fruitbat, Eliot, Twin.
7. Continue the OTL run to Jardine River, ferry across then head into Bamaga.
8. Stay at Seisia or Punsand for a more beach orientated setting.
9. See the pointy bit (The Tip)
10. Back down the PDR - passing through Laura this time to see Split Rock.
There are quite a few others things to do, but three weeks may not be enough time. I'm sure some of the other forum members will throw in their 2cents worth.
I should probably make an ITINERARY FORUM for everyone.

Thats a great bit of info and thanks for that.
I said 3 weeks, and thats to do from the tip, back to Cairns as I have 6 weeks total. I would like to get to the tip quickly, then take 3 weeks to explore the rest back including all that I can fit in that time, and I have 1 week up our sleeves if we break down, or want to stay longer in certain places.
Thanks mate and it would be a great thread if you were to make an itenery post as I among others would find it a great way to plan a trip possibly trip of a lifetime.
cheers

thats true it is hard to plan a trip if you havnt been there and are not to sure where to invest your hard earned time off work
Hi Les,
Probably not worth replying to your last question as Batsey has done a pretty good job already.
I think a thread on planning trips is a good idea. The hard part is that we all go to the cape with a slightly different idea and we all have our own personal touches we like to put on things. It would be good to have the thread just to post our ideas and then each and every one of us can then decide if we also want to follow someone else's lead.
C;mon Batsey- get it done- you have all the time in the world.

Thanks Ant,
I tend to think in regards to someone who has not been to the cape that they are going to have some idea of where to go and so on, but do not know the best places to camp, get fuel, replenish food water and the grog situation. If there was 2 or 3 different itineries suggested, then they can go with what suits them. I have a fair idea of how we are going to start our trip and where we want to go, but other peoples opinions are great to have so you can then enforce your own ideas.
I really am looking forward to this thread.
cheers

thanks guys,I did a cape trip in 2004 for 6 weeks 9500kms,we had 7 vehicles..5 with campers...did the length of the otl including gunshot with them ,although I reckon they would leave the campers at home in the future and just swag it,its a lot easier that way,I will get back up there again as we didn't see it all...as for nissans, there is a group of us together and of the 7/8 regulars there is only the 1 nissan for recovery practice the rest are Toyotas.

I was speaking Ant on the phone the other day.....he mentioned this forum and suggested I should get on and have a look.
I jumped on for a quick peek and liked what i saw.
Now i am registered and logged in. If you don't like what you see me wright then I would direct all blame to Ant :)
By now your probably wondering who is this bloke babbling on....
My name is Ben,
I am Married as of last September.
I live in the the best part of Cape York, an Aboriginal Community known as Lockhart River (my personal opinion.....like I said blame Ant).
I work part time at the school and sometimes at our local store aswell.
I keep myself very busy during the week by consistently maintaining my 2 old boats, fishing reels, Troopy and that blipping lawn mower that gets worked over time this year.
I keep my weekends and Friday arvy's free because my Wife and our dog always head off somewhere straight after school.
I LOVE to go fishing, camping, 4 wheelin, bushwalking, exploring, spotlighting, beach combing, discovering the hidden secrets of the bush like unlisted waterfalls, climbing mountains to get an overview of the area your in and just about anything else that requires the outdoors.
My hates are cats ofcourse and speed demons on the PDR that do not consider the safety or windscreens of others.
For anybody who would like to know anything else about this side of the Cape (Iron Range NP, Chili Beach, Portlands Road, Frenchmans track etc)i will do my best to give you the correct info.
Oh, i will post some piccy's later

Stacky- welcome aboard mate. I am sure you will be able to assist with the numerous questions that are fired back and forth here on the site- you may even engage in the frequent sledging that has become a mainstay here too.
Look forward to catching up with you when I am next in your area.

Thanks for the welcome,
Yes your right, this is a very special place and i always appreciate every moment when i am out and enjoying it.
I have been living here since January 07 (originally from Sunshine Coast)
and have plans on staying on in this area for at least another 4 or 5 yrs as there is just so much to explore and i am still only discovering my backyard......literally.
Pics will be coming soon when i get this photobucket to speed up, maybe i will just drop one here and there in an update.
I will only get a chance to drop a note once or twice a week as my busy enjoyable lifestyle will not allow any more time. So don't go sending a search party for me.

Hi,
My name is Lexie and I have just registered on this post on behalf of my parents. Terry and Davida Webb, they live at the croc tent and have met most of the people that come through Cape York. You have probably heard the story about 2 crazy people working from Coen to the tip!!! That was them. And if you did not hear that story you would know Poppeye. The most famous dog for sure. I also spent 3 months up the cape and loved it. I got to drive the telegraph track inc. gun shot creek. I though that was pretty good for a 20yr old city driver!!!!
Unfortunatly as most of you would be aware internet access is not easy up north!!! They have asked me to update there post with information on the roads, tracks and some new discoveries, especially after the wet season.
Terry and Davida have heard some of the best stories from the tip and the drive up, with some matching best pics. Hopefully there will be a bulletin board starting up there this year, so pictures can be admired ... or laughed at, either way helping all people who travel to the tip to share the experience.
I think the winning story for 2007 was some blokes who worked on the station getting locked out of there ute due to a wild piglet they caught and put in the cab of the ute. It was quite a trek back to the house to get some spare keys. Shamed enough already they woud not stand near the ute for the tourists passing by.
So if anybody has any questions or remember them, please say hi. Also, if anyone wants help planning trips or anything just ask. Terrry updated a mud map of the tip with all the crossings, world war 2 wrecks and some great fishing spots. Guranteed. For people heading up or returning in 2008, I think he has finished clearing out the old bush walk to see where it went. It was an overgrown dead end, but is now quite a nice walk.
So if you want to know anything or remember meeting my folks, pass on a message, they would love to hear.
Thanks,
Lexie.

Hi Lexi, good to hear from you.I think most of the people on this forum have been to the Croc tent on the way to the tip. Working in the croc tent would be a dream job. I met popeye in 2006 and have some great photos of him. Half your luck spending all that time on the Cape.

I loved working up there! Everyone that came through was so much fun ... and I got to check out all the best fishing spots. Some of the locals took us drag netting with them and pig hunting. Certainly an experience. I only wish that I could take over the business from Mum and Dad if they decide to finish up. Unfortunatly a little bit more muscle than just me would be needed.
Certainly is not fun sitting in front of a computer all day reliving driving the telegraph track. Actually at the end of last year mum and dad discovered a bird watching tree house think in the forest near what was the pajinka resort. Its so beautiful. The most tallest tree overlooking the cape.
Poppeye is definitly the most photographed dog. One of the buses gave him a full roast. So spoilt. He has to come down to brizzy during wet season as everything packs up. His not used to having to stay behind a fence.
I will hopefully make it up there during peak season for a kind of working holiday for a bit.
This forum is great though. Its funny hearing everyones different stories of there cape york experience. Its certainly different for everyone.

Hey Lexie,
i've got some pics of your dog and my dog running a muck around the croc tent in july 07.
geez popeye must hate going back to brisvegas in the wet season.
whenever we drive out up here it's like our dog sulks the whole time where out and when we get home she jumps out the car and starsts doing backflips with excitement just to be home.
you mentioned mudmaps of up north area and we got one of those the last time we visited the croc tent and it is very handy.....maybe i could do one up for the east coast visitors.
anyway have you got one map that might lead me to this tree house for this june's trip.
i love it up the north end.....it's got a pub :)

If you stop in at the Croc Tent when ya get up to the tip! Mum and Dad (Terry and Davida) have the best advice and directions. The track to the tree house would not have been used for bout 4 months ... they will be going over it in March. See what else they find as well.
There is also a bunker from the world war as well!! I dont think many people take the time out to see that one.
Lucky to be going up in June!!!!!

G'day John,
Can be very interesting/challenging working up here. 20 years ago there was just jungle and now we expect the locals to operate multi-million dollar machines as well as Australian operators. Can be very frustrating  so when I am on break I just want to get away and relax.
Cheers,
Kevin
