Hi Stacky,

I have heard of some really great buys through the government auctions in brissy. The government dont pay GST and keep the cars for a year then sell them.

I will be in Brissy for Chrissy and might check it out. I am hoping someone can give me a heads up on the way auctions work and what to look out for. I am thinking about getting an auction broker to do the dirty work.

I know that the government auction cars all have roadworthies on them. As for the process, i believe you can turn up beforehand and browse the cars. If you are interested you register and then you are able to bid.

Stacky, I can have a quick look at the Weipa noticeboards if you like - there are always second hand cars for sale here, especially this time of year - lots of miners with disposable income.
Also, have you thought of using the Teachers Union Shopper - you just tell them what you're after, when you want it, and they do all the legwork for you - they generally get a better price through their buying power. I know a few teachers who have used them, very happy.
Cheers

Thanks Barney,
That would be great if you could have a look next time you drop into the shops over there.
I didn't give the Teachers Union a thought but i will look into now.
Thanks for the reminder.

You could even try car search brokers who will negotiate with car yards and haggle a better price than you could. They usually put it through a RACQ inspect too, and show you what is wrong with it. They will get you a vehicle that you desire and for the price you want.

I have also seen some really good deals as well around the Atherton Tablelands. Because they have been used up there too, most don not have rust in them and are looked after.

Pickle or fowles auctions do most of the government stuff in brissy, they are both on the web.

I know a broker who is a diesel mechanic aswell who will find exactly what you want but you must have $$ in advance

I know it would hurt to sell my faithful Troopy!

Try this site for Ex Gov vehicles http://www.pt.qld.gov.au/auctions/motor.htm#brisbane, pays to stay away from Ex QR as they normally have had a hard life but it is the luck of the draw as you can't test drive. From memory they come with some sort of inspection report. Read the terms and conditions, it may be mentioned in there. They also have auctions in Cairns.

Here's another one at Eagle Farm on the site of the old Airport http://www.manheimfowles.com.au/, you might want to look at a Postie bike while you are there.

Here is one that will give you an idea what is avail for the price in Brisbane http://www.cousins.com.au/4wdvehicles.php

And yet another for private and dealer sales Aust Wide http://www.carsales.com.au/

Bit of light reading for you, hope this helps
Glen

Hi Plucker,
I like the idea of using a broker for doing the buying but i wouldn't go through a car yard. I use car yards for checking vehicles out and test driving them but i would never buy off one. I have only ever bought motor bikes through dealers on 2 seperate occasions and 1 of those was a rip off.
They detail and hide to many problems and never really know the history of the car or wouldn't tell you if it's bad.
Racq safety check is good but if i buy private i will have it checked over by a 4wd specialist as they they would already know what common problems a certain type of vehicle would have.
Thanks for your advice, I only feel this way from personal experiences and what i have seen done to others.

Hi Tractor,
Does the broker you know buy from auctions? Where is he based? It looks as though i will going to the auctions in Brissy but it would be good if i had someone looking for me aswell over this time, as it is my holiday.
Thanks for the input

Hi Loxsmith,

Thanks for the links, i am about to head to them now. I think i have looked at almost every private selling website across Australia.

I remember checking out Cousins over the south side of Brissy back when i got my very first ever 4by. I was on a tight budget back then and found Cousins a bit rich but i will check them out again and see if i feel the same.

When i was 17 i owned a postie bike that my Old Man picked up cheap off a mate for 50 bucks. It was great, i used to ride it from Mooloolaba to Tafe in Nambour everyday and then on weekends i would sling my board bag over my shoulder and head to either Noosa or Caloundra for a surf. It got a bit dodgy in the wind with the board bag though. I could do those round trips on less than 50 cents of fuel for a trip.
In the end an Old Lady came through a red light and i t-boned her drivers door which put me in hospital for a few days and the little red postie was no more.

Oh!
I love the way you deal with stress too!

Stress, what stress??? I only go to work long enough to earn enough cash to head bush again, and it helps to have a business partner to share the load with.

Back to the cars, a mate of mine has used this broker http://www.sscarbrokers.com.au/index.cfm and was very pleased with the results. Worth a try if you want a hassle free purchase. They have some vehicles listed on their web site but not what you are after, send them a message and they will do a search for you.

Let me know when you get to Brisbane and maybe we can have a get together of the "Cape Yorker Brisbane Community"

Hey, now that almost sounds like a plan.
Maybe a weekend in the bush, sitting around a fire comparing our Cape York experiences and memories.

Could be a pub meal, bbq at my place or overnight camp, just depends on the date and what time we all have avail.
The idea is worth kicking around anyway!

Hi stacky just in regards to buying from auction stay away from ex mining vehicles cause they have usally been thrashed and trashed by blokes who don't own em so they don't care and they are usally getting eaten alive by rust, and ex rental 4wd's keep away from them for the obvious reasons.

Saw a maroon 100 series wagon today in a car yard. Nice looking wagon at $18500. Couldnt get close enough to have a good look as a few young blokes looking it over.Had mud tyres on it and about a 6inch body lift. Not sure of what motor in it but didnt have a snorkel.

Nah not me but I work in the industry and see it everyday. I know some people make a living out of getting these ex mine vehicles for next to nothing slapping some body filler and paint on and flogging them off as good vehicles.

I worked in the coal mines at Moura many moons ago. There would be noway i would buy a mining lease vehicle.

Imagine buying an Ex-rental fresh from Fraser Island and its foreign drivers (backpackers) that had never driven manual vehicles.

Thanks for the heads up Highlift!!!

Hi Polyboy,
welcome to the forum.
I got a quick glimpse of Ant's cruiser flash past on the PDR once. Seemed to be pretty decked out to me. Especially seen as your talking about a rig thats around 20yrs old. I wonder how many times it's done the cape (probably more trips then the age of your vehicle)?

As for your Isuzu.......well.........i would like to see it in 20 years.

I noticed your the one thats carrying the matches for a repair kit. Don't forget to store them up high to keep them dry in the Isuzu.

I too, am a Holden supporter, but only on the bitumen where they belong.
