I am sitting in Cairns (feeling very seedy, big night) after the drive down on Friday night.
The road has deteriorated a lot since 6 weeks earlier. The corrugations are developing, the dust holes are getting pretty big but Main Roads have almost all of them signed before you hit them. The worst would be the edges of the bitumen to gravel, it's alright when you drop off the bitumen onto the gravel but from gravel to bitumen could cause some serious damage on some sections. As always, 1 of those cattle grids outside of Musgrave before the range is bad too.
The best section of the whole journey is the turn off to Lockhart and Portlands Road and in to the coast, that road is like a highway now, 4th and 5th gear nearly all the way.
Tommorrow i'll be charging back over it all again. The old troopy has more dust inside these days then outside.
Yowah!!!

A guy drove in yesterday from Cairns. He had to stop for 2 hours at Shram Creek on the northern side of the Hann River another couple at Archer River but other than that he had no troubles. Road was a little slippery areas but thats understandable for this time of year.

How long are you in town? Feel like a fish? Me and a Mate are heading down the Russell on Saturday?
This will depend on weather considering the possible Cyclone?

Thanks for that Teabag, with 'mistakes' like this the tag-along should be great fun.

The first tourist has just driven up the cape day before yesterday. The only iffy section was about 50km north of the y which was a little muddy. Other than that, the road is dry.

No worries dave. If they went under, it wasnt on the main road up as there is a bridge over it.
I have yet to fish Arakoon. I have heard its very good and have seen plenty of pics of the area.
