Temple bay will take a minimum of a full day to get in and out xina as the road is not the best last i heard.

From what I can gather from national Parks is that Bookings must be made about 12 months in advance and I think is booked out at 2 week blocks.

Thanks Campdog, i forgot about that. When i rang Cooktown Nat Parks office a couple of months ago, they said the only vacancy they had was in December. So it is booked well in advance normally. If it was part of the tag-a-long, bookings would have to be done not too far away in the future.

Looks like an interesting trip with a few wet lines along the way......Anyone taking boats (roof top or trailer)?
If it can't be done don't worry Nedly. I do have another option, but I thought it would nice to try on the Tagalong. You don't seem to have anything else on the East Coast so far.
Cheers,

xina, I'll see what I can do with Temple Bay, though it sounds like it may be a lost cause.
We'll see.
Be great if you could Nedly,

I'm aware it's light on for the East coast, my experiences of the East usually results with my hair getting all messed up with the wind.
I also prefer an overhead reel when fishing, they are hell to use in a head wind.
OK, enough about me.
The only places that immediately came to mind on the East, that would be reasonably easy to get to for a convoy of vehicles, were Chili B. and Cap't Billy's.
Chili B has probably been visited by everyone and, as we know, is very popular, for good reasons. Cap't Billy's is always windy.
Most of the other places I'm aware of are either not suitable for a large group and/or will take time to get there.
At one point I was thinking about the Olive R., though it is a fairly small site and requires half a day to get there, if access is permitted.
Ussher Point, too smalll and windy.
Port Stewart, unknown.
That's not to say they are out of the equation, if enough people want to go to a particular place, and it's available at the right time, I'll do all I can to work it in.
I tried to select places not normally visited by most, Maytown, Stones Crossing and Mary Valley don't usually make it on the hit lists. The same could be said for Pennyfarther and Vrilya Point.
I'm also trying for places of interest for the kids (difficult), though I have to admit fishing was also a strong consideration.

From what I remember of Port Stewart, I dont think a group tour would squeeze in. Could have changed though.
Maybe Silver Plains could be more accomodating.

G'Day Nedly,
If you look at a map and you will see a private track going south from Port Stewart along the coast. We used to have permission to go camping down there and the fishing used to be awesome. Only thing is though, that was back in 96' and i dont even know if the guy will remember me or if he is even still there.
We camped at a place calld Rocky Creek, Barra, Jacks, Crabs, everything was in plague numbers. It was also a short run out to the Cliffy Islands Nat Park. Magic place.

Your right Xina,
There is no east coast visits.
I understand it would be very difficult trying to organise this tour but surely there would be a plan to visit Iron Range (overnight) at the least.
If i was tripping the Cape it would be a definite on my list then heading up or down through Frenchmans.
Sorry to throw a spanner in the works Nedly and i'm not even on the tour.
Hopefully i'll catch up with you all at the top.

I don't disagree with you Stacky, Iron Range/Chili Beach are well worth a visit. We were there in '07 and had a great time, would go back tomorrow if I could.
And mate, they're not spanners, merely much welcomed suggestions.
One of the problems I am having is trying to guess what people are interested in, if Chili Beach is prefered, over say Maytown, then I'll alter the itinerary to suit.
There are way too many quality places to visit to try and fit into 21 days.
What I really need is some input on the itinerary as it stands now.
If an East Coast visit is what is wanted, what do I remove from the itinerary?

One of the fresh water creek crossings on that track had big perch in it as well. They were massive. To get into those spots along that road you have to cross the upper reaches of a river at low tide. Its no trouble though as at low tide there is no water and only sand.

I figured 4 full days at Punsand would allow for:-
D1 - Photo opp at the Tip, and the beach run.
D2 - T.I.
D3 - Charter Fishing
D4 - What ever, general look around.
I've been working on the theory there may be first timers with us on the tour, might want to check out the wrecks etc.
My must do's for '09 are the photo opp. with the rest of the croc crew and charter fishing (watch out bat, I'm coming).

No problem, i was just wondering. The guys and gals could also be split up into 2 groups and do different things so all would have an opportunity to fish and so on.
For eg.
Group one could go to T.I. while group 2 could do the tip and somerset. Next day swap around.

Exactly right, all comes down to numbers.
Of course, there are those that may choose not to do T.I. at all.
We did it this year, only thinking of going again to check out Friday Is. maybe.

Just to throw in some answers to questions that people may be asking.
The draft planning at present is just that. If you, as forum members, have any suggestions, now is the time to make them.
Final plans will be made once we have an indication of who is committed to the trip. For piece of mind, this will have to be finalised by the end of November. Correct me if I am wrong Nedly.
This trip is open to all forum members- do not be put off if you are only a new member.
If you are unable to make it in your own vehicle, then ask if any other members have a spot in theirs. I would like to think that xina and Campdog are going with me. Campdog, I will even put on a Nissan seat cover for your seat- that is as far as I will go though!!

Make sure you have plenty of room for any Nissan drivers that are with you Ant as you would need it for their inflated egos as well.
The main thing i want to do is the Pennefather as i havnt been there since the mid 90's and interested to see how it has changed.
I mentioned to Nedly the road into the Skardon River might be of interest to people but it takes 10 hours to get in there unfortunately.

Hey tractor,
It depends on numbers really.
While there are toilets and cold showers at Kalpower it has the added advantage of being able to book ahead for a group.
Some of the 12 mile and Orange Plains camps are excellant, IMHO, though not suitable for larger groups.

There always should be some mystery in every itinerary :)
In truth, I'm waiting on word back for this part of the tour.
Nothing has been confirmed or decided as yet.
Guarantees are few and far between these days.
If my expectations are not met I may be contacting you for some insider info.

Cook shire Council does not have any durisdiction (spelling) in this area as it is a private track. Even Napranum Council are not able to grant access and you cant get permits for it.

My apologies barney.
When i spoke to Cook Shire Council, they said that the roads are not on cook shire land. They used to be but over the years roads have changed and crossed over boundaries. Unfortunately.
Be great if they did manage to open the road however the Irwins may make things a bit difficult for them if their past actions are anything to go by.

No worries Geoff.
We travelled the road from Stones Crossing through to Bertiehaugh some years ago - it was a good drive, saved heaps of time, instead of having to go out through Batavia or down to the Y and up. We were talking to the caretaker at Bertiehaugh a few weeks ago....they have had quite a few people attempting to drive through from Stones since the Council meetings here a month or so ago....prompted the ranger to write a letter in the local rag, stating the road was not yet open, and could people please take their rubbish with them!
I know the road you are talking about that comes out near Sudley - have seen the private property sign - have often looked at this on the map and thought it would be good to have a look at.....not sure which one Kingchevy thought he might get access through.

I've been thinking (always a dangerous thing), perhaps we can add a couple of days to the itinerary and visit Chili Beach after all.
My reasoning is this:-
The Itinerary as it stood finished on Mon 12th. Oct which meant most, if not all, people would be going back to w..,w..., w., work on the 19th.
If the itinerary was extended another 2 days and finish on Wed 14th. people could still get back in time for the 19th.
To this end I have updated the original post, the changes highlighted in blue.
Have a look.
What do you think.

Does that mean you are going to volunteer for camp duties? You can do all the cleaning of fish, cooking, washing up. We can then change that awful sticker on the back of you nissan to "camp bitch". hehe

I wouldnt worry about it xina. We will just put Teabag on a chain and put him between the camp and the water. He will let us know if there are any crocs around.
Reminds me of what someone asked a mate of mine this year. Went something like this-
Mike- "Hows it going Wazza? All set for the camping trip?
Wazza- "Yeah mate. All good. Everything is down there ready. I will be taking a you guys down along with my dog on Monday."
Mike- "Whats the dog for?"
Wazza- "I like to tie him up at the edge of camp. He will bark and let us know if there are crocs near."
Mike- "What happens if a croc comes up and takes the dog in the middle of the night?"
Wazza- "If a croc takes him, just roll over and go back to sleep."
Mike- "Arn't you worried that the croc will come and have a go at us?"
Wazza- "Nah, the croc will be full so just roll over and get a good sleep because from tomorrow on i wont be sleeping. I will be sitting on top of the table with my rifle beside me."
Wazza was joking of course, but Mike didnt know what to think.

I was either thinking of heading down there in my boat or driving down towing a tinny. If it is the tinny there would only be room for one other person as i might have a friend with me. If i did take my big boat, it would only take 6 hours to get down to there from here.
I have allready gone over previous posts that has Ant has put up on the forum about good fishing spots there. I have marked them out on google earth and printed them out. Hehe.

For the Maytown part of the trip the EPA advise the tracks are not suitable for Caravans and Trailers.
If towing a trailer the route in should pose no real problems, however the route out is a lot more tough.
Track conditions will change from year to year.
When we did this trip in '07 it was fairly easy going inbound, in our opinion.
The outbound track had a few trickier spots that could pose some problems.
Definately not suitable for caravans.

Mate, i can tell you, if i hit one of those, i really would be in the shit.
Just checked up on the restrictions for Mapoon and confess, i was wrong. The southern side of the Pennefarther has no restrictions. They only go to the northern bank.
The maximum amount of alcohol that a person can have in Mapoon is:
2 litres of wine (unfortified) and 22.5 litres (2 x 30 can cartons) of light or mid-strength beer and 9 litres (1 x 24 can carton) of premixed spirits (up to 5.5% alcohol/volume)
OR
2 litres of wine (unfortified) and 33.75 litres (3 x 30 can cartons) of light or mid strength beer.
This amount is per person on foot, or per vehicle, boat or aircraft regardless of the number of people in it.

Geoff, in an earlier post, #37, Ant says the tag-along is open to all forum members.
Forum members can join the tour regardless of number of posts, 1 or 1000.
There is nothing stopping friends from becoming Forum members, and on doing so are more than welcome to join the tour.
As example, a couple of people from my club have shown an interest in the tour, I've told them they need to jump on this site and sign up first.
Hope this clarifies.

While I'm on a roll:-
There will have to be some limitation imposed on the number of vehicles coming on the tour.
After my experiences with the tour of 38 earlier this year it just makes good sense.
My initial thoughts were a total of 12 vehicles, which is still a large convoy.
Even a convoy of this size will limit where we can and cannot go.
If 12 were to be in the tour, there will be occasions when the convoy will benefit by being split into two for a day at a time.
All this will be more clear once numbers have been firmed.

G'day All,
Well hopefully, if I've done everything correctly, there should be a copy of the itinerary cover page attached to this post.
Assuming it is here, you will notice there are a few things missing.
Most obviously, a photo.
Now I could insert one of my shots, or maybe someone would like to see one of there photo's on the cover.
Has anyone got a special, FAMILY FRIENDLY, photo of the Cape they would like to contribute, if so, please do.
Or do we just say %#$&%&% and use one of Campdogs?
Secondly, names.

I agree with you that they are little on the slow side normally but mine had been fitted with a turbo and she has the same power as a 4.2 troopy now. Feels like it anyway.
Better to be on the slow side than breaking down and not getting to your destination hey Teabag.

Mate, you keep talkin about places like that and i'll end up livein up the top end.

I would like to know more about permits and bookings you guys are always talking about, like on this topic 12 months ahead for booking is that just inrelation to temple bay or all the NAT/parks up there and where is the best place to find this information on this, I have read 99% of this forum and i'm now getting dizzy over all the info but i'm still at a lost and also what is a good book or notes that i can get to say roughly how long it take going from a camp spot to the next like km=hours sort of this wow so many questions i need answered and don't know where to start
But i do have 1 question now,
this is if i was to go from cairns to the tip and back to cairns and went for 3 weeks totaly camping in a tent, say 2 persons in your past trips what would be your average total cost roughly? for your trips the more replys the better thanks to help me answer my friends

So many questions, where to start.
OK, bookings.
The reason we are looking so far ahead for bookings on the tag-along is that it will be a sizeable group and will need special consideration in some areas.
Depending on the final number of participants we may need group activity permits etc.
Also, organising camping for a larger group presents its own problems.
If camping in National Parks check out the Qld EPA website.
Time/Distance
This is a difficult one, while distances will stay the same time will vary depending on the weather.
Ron and Viv Moons book is as good a place as any to start for this stuff.
If you PM with specifics I may be able to give more relevant info.
Cost
I've been really lazy with this, while I have kept receipts etc I haven't bothered to sort it out.
At the end of the day, the biggest expense is fuel, and it cost me a lot more this year than it did last.
Also, what are you going to carry with you? Things are generally cheaper in Cairns than Bamaga for instance.
I'm a big fan of supporting local communities and tend to buy things as we travel, so probably spend more than some.
Hope that helps a little.

Campjunky,
I'll second the idea that fuel usually costs more than everything else put together, except for maybe a major mechanical mishap.
We went up to the Tip again this year. 3 week trip Sydney > Cape York > Sydney, 3 people sharing costs, plus a trip to Thursday Island for all, total cost came in under $6K. $2 K each is a pretty cheap holiday (albeit rushed a tad).
Meeting Ant at the tip???? Priceless !!
Diesel prices were pretty well maxed out at the time, and are a bit cheaper now.
How much fuel you use is obviously dependent on how much travelling you do other than up & down the main strip. If you are towing a boat or C/T, your fuel economy will obviously be affected.
Hope this helps.

OK everyone, this has been out there for a while now, in fact we have 17 pages of discussion, crunch time is FAST approaching. There are certain things that have to be decided on and booked NOW, if it's not already too late.
A. I need to have number of vehicles and number of people for purposes of booking in certain areas, Maytown as example. I need to organise group activity permits etc dependent on number of people.
B. Is everyone OK with the dates?
C. Is everyone OK with the destinations?
D. WHO'S JOINING US
E. Do we want the CapeYorker editor on the trip?
F. How many children of school age will be on the trip?
Why have I asked E & F?
If there are no school aged children joining us I propose a date change to accommodate the editors availability, ie D1 - Sat 3rd Oct.

Just to keep everyone sorta informed:-
The itinerary details are being finalised and I hope to be able to make the final itinerary available in the next couple of weeks.
I've still got a couple of things that need to be confirmed/finalised with various land owners.
That, plus work keeps getting in the way.
BTW
One thing I haven't really covered before, I will be aiming to limit the convoy to 12 vehicles, though this can be flexible to some extent.
A convoy of more than 6 vehicles will need to be broken into two groups for some stages of the trip, however this is detail that can be sorted when numbers have been confirmed.
I'll soon post numbers of confirmed vehicles, however again, I need to talk with a couple of people first.

Fantastic!!! did that run though there about 10 odd years ago...from the OTL through to the crossing....remember some great camping spots alonng the way with running water.
The Crossing was deep and hairy and there was a steep hill on the far bank with camp sights up on the left.
Magic place to sit in the creek with a cold tinny and wash the red bull dust away.
I can see why there trying to lock the place up...there is a culture in Aussie that seems to be that we are not allowed to have too much of a good thing.

I hear regularly from some station owners about how people have accessed their land and left either left behind rubbish or have shot livestock. Its this that has caused them to shut off areas to the general public. Its a real shame.

Geoff is right Brigalow. When I was at Temple Bay on Bromley station 25 years ago, we used to get guys coming in then, who thought it was great sport to get as drunk as possible, and shoot anything that moved, including livestock. It's a shame it still appears to be happening sometimes.

One of the coppers up here i know was involved in 2 incidents last year. Both times livestock was shot and only one of those incidents did they find the culprits. A lot of it happens apparently but as to whether those people had permission to enter the station was another matter all together.

"Unfortunately, Temple Bay is fully booked for the 2009 season. I've spoken to both my Senior Ranger and District Manager, and they've said that it would be unfair to allow a second (and oversized) group in, while another group is in there."
The ranger also apologised for the late reply.
Looks like we'll have to satisfy ourselves with a visit to Chili Beach.
BTW, for future reference, it appears the best way to contact Cooktown NP&W is via email. I've tried numerous phone calls and left messages on each occasion, it was only the email that was responded too.

You would think since the gun laws came in the guns would have thinned out....I know that the wild pigs down this way have grown in numbers even though lot of the young blokes still get into them with pig dogs....
Going into Bathurst Bay last August we run into about half a dozen mobs of a dozen or so...you know the pigs are getting bolder and bolder and even like to wonder into our camps...

I know a lot of people that have gun licences. I am also sure there are people out there who have not bothered to register a gun also due to the remote location. I would say it would be pretty easy to get away with something up here due to the remoteness.

I have to be honest, I didn't think we would be granted access either.
Though, in honesty, the only reason seems to be that the area is fully booked, if it hadn't been booked I think we may have been OK.

Well, i have been able to organise more time off for the Tag-a-long so i will be joining all of you from the start of the trip (Mareeba) right up until the last day at Vrilya Point. I am really looking forward to it.
Oh, and Nedly, not sure if this will be any hassle either, but in May i will be in Cairns looking to buy another 4'by. It will most likely be a Landcruiser wagon at this stage, and i will be taking this on the trip rather than the hilux i mentioned in an earlier post.

I have to be honest, I didn't think we would be granted access either.
Though, in honesty, the only reason seems to be that the area is fully booked, if it hadn't been booked I think we may have been OK.

Batesy put me onto the ranger last year and i rang to see if we could get in.There is onlysmall window opportunity to get in and you nearly need to be booking now for next year.Only one group in at once and you lock yourself in on the way in.I think it is normally about august before the road is is even looked at.

Make sure you look us up when in Cairns and we can catch up for a few coldies.......Don't need much of an excuse but it sounds about as good as any to smash a couple of icy cold beers......hehehehe

Yeah, no worries. That would be great. I plan on heading down as soon as the road opens for about 2 weeks or so. I also have some gear stored at Mossman at my folks place that i have to sort and shift.

I didn't propose a date change purely for Ant, though admittedly he does come into the equation.
I'm trying to organise some specific camping arrangements with NP&W, to some extent the dates will be dictated by this availability.
Also a couple of other issues I'm waiting for clarification on.
Temple Bay did have some impact as well, though this is no longer an issue :(
I should be able to have final dates sometime next week, once I get responses.

You should get one of those beer coolers that are made to go in a pool. They float and have 4 stubby holders around the base and in the middle is an ice bucket. If i had a pool i know i would be getting on of those bad boys.

I haven't really thought that one through just yet.
On arrival would probably be the easiest way, though it will depend on my total 'out of pockets' for the permits etc.
In short, to be decided.

I sure envy you Campdog. I have been to the place to first see the sun in the world. I didnt know that on Samoa you could see the end of the worlds day.
You should just get an external harddrive with lots of GB's and just download to that. Might be cheaper than all those memory sticks.

Got a 250 gig usb hard drive, Just need enough cards to see me through the day. I use raw format dng on my camera and get about 120 images on a 4 gig card.so about 4 cards should last an hour or two and back up to laptop and hard drive. The spot were staying at gets both sunrise and sunset.probably a bit like the tip of Cape.

Thats understandable then. I tried shooting in raw format not long ago and didnt get many pics before the card was full.
