Hi guys,
Did Ron keep the Crucifix, or did he throw the catfish back? It would have been a good sized one. [The Crucifix that is.]

A quick check of "Spot", shows that our intrepid travellers have hit Weipa, moved up to the Pennifather River for a short rest, then moved on towards Stoney's Crossing on the Wenlock.

Things have gone quiet for the past few day's though......perhaps Ant's "Secret Spot" Campdog??

This "Spot" system seems to have great applications for those on the road, to keep loved ones (or just general busy bodies like me :) ) informed of general movements.

They should be a manditory item for anybody doing walking treks into the Blue Mountains, Kayak'ers etc, so that emergency services can easily track missing people.

Pretty obvious isnt it Scorcher, gone quiet near stones crossing and wenlock river. Secret spot for sure.

Just had a look at the Spot website and it doesnt seem to show a track into the Pennefarther.

Its was quite interesting as well when we got to Merluna. Plenty of pigs around ad they even come right up into your camp at night. There were even a few stories about the wild white man of Merluna. ;)

Geoff,

Yes, it appeas that "Spot" does have some limitations relating to the "minor" tracks. It also doesn't seem to have the ability to store any more than a set number of location points, or perhaps it is limited to storing for a certain number of days....not sure.

I'd be guessing that the "Wild White Man of Meluna" was just Ant bare foot & dressed up with his cloth around his face, after a few drinks... :D

He did it at the Pennefarther whie fishing from the rocks. Made a wrong step and heard a snap. The following 2 days he walked/limped around on it before going to a hospital to get it checked.

This is great fellas.

I hope you are grabbing some video footage too. Could be a ton of stuff to throw up on youtube for all of us to have a look at. Cape York movie stars in action.

I tell ya what though, there's a few rough nuts in that crowd ... and who the hell costumed up that fella with the gammy foot? Yellow Crocs, Nedly?!!

See, that's proof that driving a bloody Nissan will rob a man of any self-respect. ;)

Enjoy the rest of the trip everyone.

Hey, Ant, hope the stress has faded a little for you.

First he snaps the Nissan chassis in half, then his leg, be careful Nedly. What's next???
Poor bugger, that's the last thing you need on a long trip! The upside is that with the wife driving you are free to drink all day. Hope the alcohol is killing the pain mate.

Please explain to a non fisher type person what a crucifix is???

In catfish, there is a bone in the head that resembles jesus nailed to the cross. This is commonly known as a crucifix.

Don't know about recent editions, but Grants' Book of Australian Fishes used to have a good photo of one. Souvenier shops sell them in Cairns and Cooktown, or they used to 20 odd years ago.

Campdog,

I see via "Spot" that Ant & the boys have spent a day or 2 at our favourite place - Vrilya Point, and now b-lined it for Weipa.

The boys & I got together for a chat tonight to start planning our Cape Trip for next year. Bathurst Bay, Skardon River, Vrilya Point & the Tip are all on the agenda. Might even set up camp at Weipa for a few day's, and do a few day-trips out to Stoney's Crossing (or there-abouts ;) )

Well, Teabag and myself didnt wind up going to Cape Melville as the wind was doing some crazy stuff. We fished a couple of waterholes and the upper reaches of 2 rivers and caught a few barra. Teabag even got one on a gold bomber, which will be posted up for the benefit of our glorious editor just to show that gold bombers catch fish.

We met up with the rest of the group yesterday at Kalpowar then about lunchtime we left them to go to Cooktown. I must say, its really hard roughing it here, cold beers, fresh barra, cabin, cold beers, tv, air conditioning, cold beers, no dust and last but not least, cold beers.

The rest of the hoard should be arriving in Cooktown today and will have a few drinks together as this is the last night we will be together.

There have been a few problems with 2 of the vehicles on the trip but will cover this at a later date.

Anyway, i am off back to the beer fridge for a top up.

Check SPOT he might have accidentally left it on.

A mate of mine lost one off a bike on the way to our Picnic Race met last weekend at Tabulum NSW. He got home, logged on, got the position and rode back out the next day and found it. A little the worse for wear but still working away! Can't beat that

Glen,

I think I read somewhere that another Tag-a-long member bought SPOT back home to the dealer.

From memory Ant was planning on jumping on a houseboat at Weipa for a week or more following the tag-a-long. Perhaps the fish are on the bite

Hi all,
Forgive the short reply here as I have only just got back after spending over six weeks in the Cape and things are very hectic. The trailer is in the yard and hasn't even been unpacked yet. I am waiting until later this afternoon to do that so I can have a few beers......
The total trip was fantastic and involved the first 16 days with the Croc Crew on the Tag-A-Long. From there, I spent a week with Bat while I put the November edition of Fish and Boat together - that was fun!!
After that, I drove to Weipa and jumped on a houseboat for a week with a crew of six others. Following that, I headed back up to Pennefather for a few more days then went back to the 'Secret Spot' for a few more days before driving south to Cairns.

To the members of the Croc Crew Tag-A-Long, thank you so much for your company. I would like to think that the trip was a huge success and each and every one of you have contributed to its success. Les (Nedly), your work in getting this off the ground was a huge task and I cannot thank you enough. Chris, you must be congratulated for putting up with Les during this time as I can only imagine what he would have been like if he is anything like me when I get an idea in my head.
Ken (Blue), your company and attitude towards things was great and I am sure you had a top time.
Paul and Hanneke (Rocky): I really enjoyed my time with you, particularly at the secret spot where we pretty well spent most of the afternoon wading in the water and sinking the odd cold refreshment.
Paul (Teabag): Mate what can I say. You have all the right gear and are very well set up. Thanks for getting me out of the shit on the way into Pennefather. Yes, a Nissan had to pull me out of the sand!!!! And, on more than one occasion.
Geoff (Geoffjy): You give everything 110% and it certainly made the trip to see someone go in with all guns blazing at every opportunity.
Richard and John (Brigalow): You guys are great and it was a pleasure to have you on the trip. I hope that you managed to kick back and recharge the batteries and get ready for the next adventure.
Greg (Maverick01): I am sure you had a ball up there in your Nissan and can now say that you have done the Cape. Lets hope you make it back up again on another trip. Are you keen to do Maytown again??
Alan and Karen (Boxy):Your trip was certainly a 'tester' with some of the issues you had on your vehicle but I am sure that you are looking back on it positively. Well done on the crossing at Stones.
Ron (Mylo): You were the 'ultimate' passenger - thank you. My only concern was your antics at every water crossing!! There may be a front cover shot in there but I am not sure what magazine it would be for....

Anyway, time for a few pics.

Glen

The trip went well, in general.
There were the usual things like:-
- Bent chassis
- Blown globes
- Incident with a tree
- Very tired fridge
- Failed Alternator
- Failed Starter motor
- Bogged in sand (mostly because of the trailer)
- Broken leg
- Battery problems

There were no drownings.

As for a trip report, I figured I'd leave that for others to do.
My report will (if accepted) be in the next edition of the mag.

You missed a great trip Glen.

The trip went well, in general.
There were the usual things like:-
- Bent chassis
- Blown globes
- Incident with a tree
- Very tired fridge
- Failed Alternator
- Failed Starter motor
- Bogged in sand (mostly because of the trailer)
- Broken leg
- Battery problems

There were no drownings.

As for a trip report, I figured I'd leave that for others to do.
My report will (if accepted) be in the next edition of the mag.

You missed a great trip Glen.

The incident with a tree sounds interesting? They have been known to jump out in front of cars from time to time

No drownings? Nolans didn't claim anybody?

Yours is the third Nissan with that same Telstra service body fitted that I have heard of cracking in half. Lucky you caught it early.

I will have to order my 2010 edition soon then (haven't had time to read the 2009 mag yet)

The fitout of my new car is coming along nicely, cardboard boxes everywhere!

The bent chassis I was referring to wasn't mine, one of the Rodeo's bent the chassis on the trip, had it repaired at Weipa.

I met a guy at Cooktown, had a later model of the Telstra truck fitted with leaf springs same as mine, he showed me what Nissan had done to the chassis at the place where mine had cracked.
Nissan had fitted a plate to the area to avoid cracking problems, which means this is a design fault known to Nissan.

I wonder if I send the bill to Nissan if they'll reimburse me the cost to have this problem fixed?
Probably not :(

You will know Les that the squeaky wheel gets the oil!!

If you mention that you are considering reporting it as a safety issue to the ACCC for all the vehicles to be recalled you might get some immediate action. If they are aware of the fault and are do nothing about the existing vehicles then they are eligible for some major consequences from authorities.
Here is somewhere to start http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/952401

Check out how many are already there!
