Well, it's finally happened and I went out a bought a boat. It's not new but new to me and can't wait to get out and use it.....I should be picking it up Friday though Sat at the latest.....It's a 5mtr Quintrex Hornet Trophy 2002 model with 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke. It has a 70ltr under floor tank, full boat covers and motor cover, Bimini, Deck wash and has a Navman 4600 full colour sounder plus Navman 5500 Tracker Plotter. So it's pretty much ready to rock and role.......Can't wait to give it a run and see how it goes. I will post up some pictures on the weekend.......
I'm excited..........:D
Congratulations Teabag,
Just hope it has a higher transom than the 16 foot Quintrex we had. That was no joke with about a 3 ft.following sea. Enjoy,
Cheers,
xina.

I have the same boat except shorter and they ride superbly. That size you should make the reef up your way on a good day. Having said that the hornet trophy is the ideal boat for lure casting as the boat is a bit lower than other boats and the wind does not blow you around as much.

Cheers guy's. I thik I got a pretty good deal as he only wanted $15k and it's in pretty good nick though has been used a fair bit which I think is a good thing. I believe the death of most boats and motors tends to be due to the lack of use......

I have been watching boats in the 2nd hand market for some time. It sounds as though you have a great deal considering all the stuff that comes with the boat eg, big 4 stroke, colour sounder, gps, covers etc.
With a 70lt tank i'd imaging you'll get some distance from the crowds and with a 5m i reckon you'll ride across the chop pretty good too.
I'd be just as stoked as you sound, congrats on the boat and i'll bet your chewing at the bit to get amongst it. Hope the weather pulls into line for you.
I am interested to find out how much water you draw when idling with the leg of the motor if you could please teabag, for my own interest.

Yeah, I sent him a PM so will see how it goes.....Being new to the area I don't know too many keen fisherman and with the bot being a 5mtr it's a bit much to launch and retrieve on your own.........

If you like the creeks, Trinity inlet is a big place where you can catch all tropical species and crabs so I am told. Personally I have never fished there simply because of location, but have lots of friends who have given it a workout and done well.
I have fished the reefs out from Mourilian and there is lots of trout out there, but I think that is the norm on the GBR. Be aware that we are just coming into the first of the tropical fin fish reef closures too.
There is a mag called Aust. fish finder that will have more spots than you can imagine and show you all the sat photos of the areas.
Ant is the editor of Fish and Boat, monthly newspaper edition which is informative also. As is the web site forum which might help.
You have dozens of options from Cairns so now all you have to do is make the most of them.
Cheers.

Plucker,
Very many thanks for the heads up and tips......I've live around boats pretty much my whole life coming from the Whitsundays/Proserpine and being in the Navy for the last 18 nearly 19 years. It's pretty much local knowledge that I need from the many on here. I'm looking at doing a week trip to Kurumba straight after the wet next year and also keen on a week trip to do around Hinchinbrook etc.....Your right, many options though if I get out this weekend it will be mainly just to learn the boat as they are all different......Cheers again.....

The thing I found about the hornet trophy style boat is when you go over waves, you wait for the clunk on the down stroke. Doesn't seem to happen with them. They seem to smooth into the down stroke if that makes sense.
What kind of fishing do you intend to do Teabag - lure/ bait, and what type of fish do you wish to target. I have spent lots of time around the Hinchinbrook area over the last 15 odd years and know the place fairly well. I lure only and that place is the closest I can get to Cape style fishing without the travel.

When it comes to fishing, I love it all and will target most things.....From reef, estuary and pelagics, I'm not fussed.......I generally only catch Barra for fun as IMO they are not worth eating and would prefer a nice Jack or Finger Mark for a feed......I've never fished Hinchinbrook but am very keen to....If your keen some time maybe we can organise a fishing trip for a few day's down there? The I could tap into some of your local knowledge.....
I don't mind Lure or Bait fishing....I find Bait fishing very relaxing.......

I would recommend joining a fishing club Teabag a this is a great way to make fishing friends and also to find the good spots to fish, what rigs to use, whats biting etc.
I hear the one at Yorkey's Knob is a good one and is quite large. Ant would have a better idea about the different ones down there.

Nice boat Teabag,
Like Geoff said, plenty of deck space to run around the boat when you are trying to land that monster. Very tidy.
The trailer has that typical red stain look of Cape York, has it been up this way?
You might end up looking like a mini road train.....vehicle, camper trailer and boat in tow (somehow).

Yes, the familiar red stain.....The boat is from Darwin and hasn't been to the Cape.....I'm thinking of a week long trip straight after the wet next year to try and catch the run off at Kurumba. Try to get there before the southern hords.....

Either that or bring it up the cape on the Tag-a-long next year.
Nah, just kidding. I wouldnt do that to a good trailer boat. Maybe an old tinny.

Teabag, I see you mention that you are considering a week in the Hinchinbrook. Late last year I spent my honeymoon up there for 5 days on a houseboat. The one I went on was huge, and we towed our hornet trophy around behind the mothership.
They are like a house on water with fridges and stoves, etc.. Our range was from Dunk Island to the Palms and a fair way out, although not to the reef.
The other option is camping on the few designated spots on the Island, although you must be self sufficient and book early.
Option 3 would see you camped in Cardwell at one of the local places and you would have to launch everyday, although you could try different boat ramps around there.

I have seriously thought about option 1 and was only discussing it with Ant on the weekend but it would be good to find another like minded couple for this. Option 3 is the likely one and if your ever keen to meet up there for some fishing and camping, let me know......Cheers and thanks for the advice/info, it's much appreciated........

Back in 2001, the family booked a houseboat at Hinchinbrook. Three weeks before we supposed to go on it we got a phone call saying that it was no longer available. The reason for this was that some idiots and run it up onto some rocks and was being repaired. So after all this time i still havnt been out around Hinchinbrook, only driven past it.

The December edition of Fish and Boat will have a feature on Hinchinbrook which may be worth a look.
The houseboat option is a great one. I have done this and would recommend it again.
You can also charter a yacht if you wish.
Heaps of accommodation options.

Teabag, buy now you'll know what its able to do [ different horses for courses] nice boat mate. I bet you other blokes have good setups aswell. I have a 4.35 Quiny with a 50 yamaha , good thing about it is you can have 3 blokes to one side of it and you won't end up in the drink. Needs about 400mm to get out of trouble but about 5/600mm to get on the plane, hows that feelin when she's niken the bottom but keeping it on the plane. Bought it new in 2004 and still haven't killed the outbboard. Been knowen to plough the odd sandbank.

Yeah, been very happy with it though my only bad point would be the cut away transom, wish it wasn't like that......Since getting it I have done some work to the boat and trailer. Wrt the trailer I finished today doing the wheeling bearing and replaced the u-bolts for the axel and springs, changed brake pads etc. Wrt the boat I have installed a VHF with external speaker, fixed the bilge pump as it wasn't working, installed a GME radio so I can listen to the Cricket during the boxing day test, replaced the nav lights with the LED ones (soooo much brighter), put a 12v socket on the boat for the spotlight for night river work, replaced the stern light as it also wasn't working plus just some general house keeping. I also got a few modifications done to the boat cover and motor cover so it's ready for the big trip south......Still have a few things to do but there always is with boats.......hehehehe.....Also, I have been lucky enough that SWMBO allowed me to get two new rods and reels......With a little help from Ant on the first one I got a 2kg Gladiator Snake Skin with a Banax Sedna reel and the second outfit is a Calcutta 700b on a 24kg Ugly Stik Bluewater Jig rod with 50lb braid......Should keep me out of trouble for a while or at least til I see my next rod and reel to add to the collection as there always is.....hehehehehe

Well, just got the boat back from service and that wasn't a cheap venture though expected. I must admit I wasn't really happy with the service done as I know a few short cuts where taken which I hope they have now rectified. I dropped it back off again this morning for them to sort out and get a new Tilt and Trim motor fitted as mine was one the way out. Does anyone know a good mobile Outboard mechanic and his contact details? I'm not too keen on taking mine back to this particular dealership.....I know a 100hr service wouldn't be cheap but $742 was a bit steep IMO for a 60hp Yammy 4 stroke plus another $1100 for the Tilt and Trim motor........I know, boats aren't cheap but thought these prices where a little extreme considering the hrs it takes/took for service...................:?:

These guys must be charging around $100 or more an hour for labour. It doesn't take that long to get in and find and fix a problem on an outboard.
There is a mobile mechanic in Cairns who is hard to catch because he provides courses in fixing outboards and travels around the Cape teaching people. I have not used him but he has a good name and i have spoken to him on the phone and he has been very helpful. He has a small add in the yellow pages but because i don't have the yellow pages i can't help you (ring the few in there and ask if they provide TAFE courses and you'll find him).
I got a mobile mechanic out to my place back down on the sunny coast years ago and he showed me how to service, maintain and change impeller kit on my outboard myself because he knew where i was off too. After learning some of the stuff, i cannot see where these mechanics get these prices from. Unfortunately Ken Lewis has retired now, so you can't use him.
Good luck with it Teabag.
Oh, if you find the guy in Cairns can you give me his number too please.

I know a 100hr service wouldn't be cheap but $742 was a bit steep IMO for a 60hp Yammy 4 stroke plus another $1100 for the Tilt and Trim motor.......I know, boats aren't cheap but thought these prices where a little extreme considering the hrs it takes/took for service...................:?:
I'm not surprised at the cost of parts. It cost me $1250 for an electronic fuel pump and the inline fuel filters in the fuel train before the injectors cost $90 each. They definitely dont miss you.
As for the labour rate, if its anything like up here, they charge by the hour even if it takes 30 mins. Its rediculous.

Mate, I guess it's like anything these days. It hard to find good quality service with anything has most I've experience are dodgie in one shape or form. I wouldn't be surprised if much of what is listed to do in a service is not done and just list them as such which is a ripe piss off.......Though not surprised.........I may just take it to work and get one of our Marine Technicians to have a looks and service next time......

Yes, it's crazy when a complete motor doesn't add up to that price with spare parts.....I guess that's how they make their money........

Tell me about it. The motors cost $7000 each. Bit hard to justify the $1250 for the fuel pump doesnt it.

Not sure if this helps now but Ken Lewis is still working on the Sunshine Coast. He is in the middle of servicing my motor at the moment. Just waiting for a voltage rectifier to show up.
He can be reached at 0428 138 688
