Hema have just released a new book titled 'Cape York Atlas and Guide - including the Old Telegraph Track'. Denis O'Byrne, the author, has done a great job on it.

It covers everything from planning the trip, what to do and see, Cairns to Cooktown, Peninsula Development Road, Telegraph Track and Bypass roads, NPA and Torres Strait and the Gulf Savannah.

It also gives you info on the history of the Cape, where to go an what to see, land and water based activites, wildlife watching, gold and gem fossicking, 4WD'ing and so on. Also included in the guide is all of their maps. Anyone who buys this will not have to buy any road maps.

It really is a good book and is 128 pages long.

I know it sounds a lot like the Cape Yorker but it isnt, its completely different.

Geoff,

How would you compare it to Ron & Viv Moon's Cape York "Bible" ??

Geoff,

How would you compare it to Ron & Viv Moon's Cape York "Bible" ??

Ronand Viv's book needs a bit of updating as some of their info is about 8-9 years out of date. Even apart from that, i would say that the Atlas and Guide would be a lot more helpfull.

Denis was up here last year and i spent several weeks with him going through the history, operators in the area and what to do and see from the Telegraph Tack up to the pointy bit. I'm glad to see the book turned out allright.

Think I'll head down to the map shop tomorrow and get this one.
You can never have too much Cape York info.
Like that style of spine as well, can open the book onto itself, without breaking it.

RACQ Shop didn't have it. Neither did the newsagent that usually has those sort of books, but I've got it ordered. Hopefully have it within 2 weeks.
Cheers,
xina.

You were mentioned, but obviously didnt appear in the publication as well as 2 other operators up here. I am allready putting an email together in regards to a couple of things that should be changed.

I believe that the 2nd edition will be next year, so i will try to iron out a few of the wrinkles.

ron and viv moons book is way out of date and some locals have tried to tell them and it seems it falls on deaf ears.

one example i found was cow bay....its a ghost town but it says it has fuel food etc....very unhappy because i ue=sed the book to plan my trip and had to special order it to get "this years" edition.

by the way elliot falls has NEVER had showeres to my knowledge...:(

like i say, i havn't seen the hema book. whats the go, is it a paid advertisement thing, or do they just pick and choose what they reckon. is a bit strange that i 'obviously' didn't appear in it.

i appreciate the cape is a big place, but so many publications that claim to have everything covered, don't

that is something that i beleive ant has done well, rather than breifly cover everything, the capeyorker mag does a great job of covering properly what parts of the cape it features annually.

to my knowledge, the moons havnt been up here for 5 yrs. In those 5 yrs there have been some significant changes.

should say though when i was holidaying up here at the end of the 90's i appreciated having a copy of the moon book.

cheers

You can count me as one of those locals. I am sick and tired of people coming in here and telling me what the book says and wont take my word for things. Then the argue that the have the latest edition 08' and that it cant be wrong.

And you are right in what you say, there has never been any showers at Eliot Falls.

G'DAy yetti,

There is no advertising in this book and any businesses that get listed in it get it for free. However, you are in my email mate. You have not been forgotten. You will definitely be in the next edition.

I just got the HEMA book and have been wondering whether to get myself the 11th ed of Ron and Viv Moon's book but this thread has just convinced me not to.

As for Cow Bay its such a shame to see it decline the way it has. I've been going there pretty much every year since '03 and when I first went the pub was thriving and there was a restaurant next to the Rainforest retreat motel where we stayed.

When I went in 06 it had hit its lowest point, the pub was empty, restaurant closed and the managers of the rainforest retreat were unfriendly to me even though I was a yearly guest at the motel. Last year it seemed to be on an upturn though, Eric and Jude the owners of the motel have done a great job and really increased their facilities and even have a dining area and chef now. Theres also a restaurant open again. Pub is still empty though :(
