I'm run petrol ... but I think diesel is $1.42 to about $1.48, depending on the day.

Musgrave, Archer, Bramwell and Bamaga are all more expensive.

Coza

$1.25 in Traralgon for Diesel. Guess I better put another couple of hundred in the fuel account.

batesy

Cheapest will obviously be in Cairns or Mareeba - it's about $1.25 there.

Weipa is usually several cents cheaper than the rest of the Cape, mainly because we get it shipped in - plus we are a town with 3500 people, as opposed to Musgrave/Archer/Bramwell who have more cows around them than people.

It hurts to pay over a buck fifty a litre, but once you see how far from civilisation the roadhouses are you start realising why it's so expensive.

It costs me about 160 bucks to do the PDR from Lakeland to Weipa - 560km (a bit over 100L). Remembering I run a gas guzzling petrol cruiser. Your diesel should do get from Lakeland all the way to the Tip on the same amount or maybe a fraction more.

As long as it dosen't get over the 2 dollar mark it should be a good. As I think some remote town in OZ are or close to.

How are the prices on food in the Supermarkets, Someone told me that a lettuce was $10 I can't belive that. If so Salad, will be off the list once we get up there. 10 dollars surely not.

batesy
21-05-2007, 08:39 PM
Coza, a lettuce is currently $4.80 in Woolies up here - but that it pretty expensive even for Weipa. Usually around $3.50.

2L Milk - a touch over $4 I think.
Bread - $3.50
Rum and coke cans - $30 for a 6 pack
Cape Yorker Magazine - priceless!

So you need to earn a lot of money to eat and drink in weipa. Is there much work for concretors and tilers up there. I wouldn't think so with only 3500 people

batesy

Yoyo... Oh man, if you are a concreter and tiler you could make yourself into a very well off individual up here! You should have been here two years ago.

Daycare - start a privately owned centre up here and you'd be a millionaire.

No worries, As long as you don't mind getting dirty and the smell of epoxys sealers and urathaines doesn't turn you off you will defenitly have a job.
The problem is we wouldn't do much of it as we will be drinking and fishing.

Thats why I make sure my staff aren't big on neither as I had one fella about a year ago and every week we will make sure to find an excuse to go out and have a " look" at the water. Problem was the water was always looked good and we always had fishing rods in the back of the utes

Not sure what Diesel is worth. I'm sure you'lll be paying close to $2 anywhere out on the PDR.

Yeah, noticed that, was going to edit the photo but then thought, why, it is the cheaper fuel.
Anyway, it's all history now, I think I would be happy to be paying that price up there now.

Given the price flucuations that are going on I know any price quoted will have changed by the time it makes the forum.
Just curious that's all.

I'm allowing for $2/ltr for the trip, anything cheaper will be a bonus as far as I'm concerned.
Hope it is cheaper than that though, will give me a bit more drinking money :)

Fuel todat in NSW hit 1.40 litre and was 1.29 a month ago.I dont think you will pay anywhere near $2 litre unless you buy fuel at Bramwell.I normally ge a jerrycan full there just in case I detour a bit before Bamaga.
Not as Bad as last year though.
My fuel bill in 04 was $1600, last year $2000 when prices were up.Ths year wasnt too badwith 3 in the vehicle, spent 3 weeks away to the cape and a cost of $800 each which civered nissan fuel, boat fuel ,food, grog , repairs the lot, good holiday.

$800 you say for 3 weeks is that every thing $2400 the lot

I think I'm looking at about $8000 and 10,000 K's for 6 weeks for a family of 4 and a couple of grand for bills and stuff when not at home. Be good if the bills stopped when the worked stopped.

Diesel in Traralgon this morning was $1.25 unleaded was $1.43

So what do you plan on doing to be averaging approx $1500 a week. I hope mine doesn't cost that much
is About 1300 a week which does sound like alot.

I will travel about 9000 km could be 10,000km

9000km average 13 Litres per 100 over the whole trip at average price $1.40

Fuel = $1638

On our travels from here to Cairns I can't be sure that we will make every meal our selves,
Meal on the road for 4 could about $50 (Macca's, road house)
Meal and a drink in a pub could be $100
Plus Camp food Could be about $150 a week

Food = 2 brought Meals and grocerys $300 a week x 6 weeks $1800

Accomodation 4 days from here to Cairns 2 weeks to get home I can't say we will be able to Camp all the time, so will stay in Caravan parks and the odd Motel maybe

Accomodation $120 a week over 6 weeks $720

Drinks $75 a week 6 weeks $450

Attractions
Fishing Charter out of weipa $220
trip to thursday island $200
Kurandra Scenic Railway $200
And what ever else we get up to

Attraction = $200 a week 1200

Just in case $1000 extra

Grand total $6808 7 G's

Add another 1000k which could happen with Detours
A Movie world or sea world
That extra night or 2 I can't be bothered to set the roof top tent up we'll just grab a motel tonight. The odd souvenir
Cost ya another 1000 smackers

8 G's at the very most, will be good to come home with a couple of grand

Most of you guys are already half way there, I live 1hr an a half from the Southern most point of main land Australia.

Last year we had 6 weeks away from home,Our food for the trip was pre packed and meat frozen down so we didnt spent too much on road. Fuel was 8000ks and $1600, camping was mostly free camp except for NAtional parks, weipa and Punsand Bay and a couple of nights on the way back.
We had a trip out to the reef and a few nights out and didnt spent much more than about $5000 all up.Just depends on what way you want to do it.We packed a lot of snack food and had light lunches from our own supplies. That was for 3 people and the fuel was pretty pricey last year as well. What money we had left over from our budget went into this year and next years trip to the cape.
Its fairly easy to make up an itenary and work your costs outto give some sort of idea.
Just set a budget and stick to it, give or take a few thou

Just found my log book on fuel etc.

2004 2006 2007
-nsw $1.05 1.45.9 1.29
Cairns - $0.93.9 1.35.9 1.21
Cooktown - $1.009 1.45.9 lakeland 1.32
Musgrave - $ 1.17 1.60 coen 1.45
Archer - $ 1.16 1.75 1.73
Weipa - $1.05 1.45.9
Bramwell - $1.25 1.95 1.91
Bamaga - $1.15 1.72

Just an idea or fuel prices

Travelled between 8000 and 9000ks all up weight around 4.1 t with a 4.2 turbo diesel Gq and average over trip about 1400-1600 lites at about 6.2 km litre over trip.
2006 fuel prices knocked the wallet aroung a bit.
So all up around 1600 -$2000 for fuel at worst consumption.

Campdog 6.2k's per litre
Coza 7.7k's per litre fingers crossed.

Will be interesting to see how things work out in the end, i have more Hwy driving to do coming from Vic (more fuel stops that will be cheaper than $1.40) and no trailer, Same Motor.

I could have got better last time but I put bigger tyres on and they cut down the revs a bit, so I ended up travelling at about 105k/h to cairns and back.It probably doesnt make much difference but once on the dirt my tyre pressure is down to 28psi and I normally drive in 4wd high range.so probably uses a bit more. Also turbo boost around 13psi.

i am heading up at the end of the month and will be more than happy to give you a run down of my fuel expenses.

I run a 4.2lt Factory turbo diesel and I get 10lt each 100klm around town. Of course, open roads gets even better.

To be honest, I use a product called Bi-Tron in my fuel and oil. Give it a look on the net (just type in Bi-Tron). I distrubute the stuff up here and don't have to push it as it does work.

In regards to fuel costs, while I lived in the Cape I never looked at the bowser to see what price fuel was. Think about it, you want to drive, you are there and what difference does the price make? You have to buy the stuff to get around and just like real estate, it is going to keep going up. Don't put off a trip due to the price as you will never do it at that rate.

Coza

Your right about the cost of fuel Ant. I never look to see what I'm paying you need it to get around so in it goes. But on a remote trip like cape york it is nice to be prepared and have the extra Coin in the pocket just in case the fuel is over $2. I see in Campdogs post at Bramwell it about $1.91 thats getting up there. Will cheak out the Bi-tron That's an extra $40 dollars to fill up on $1.50 and the A carton of beer Now that might stop me going Mmmmm Beer.

When you think about a Cape Trip, its not a Toyota or a Nissan that breaks down but a vehicle and driver thats not Prepared for the trip. People dont realise the damage a bad road can do to a 4by.and they load them up like theres no limit.
You can pull up along the track and watch them go past, loaded up and 100 k/hr and all they see is dust.
Couple of years ago between Coen and Musgrave I could see little blue lights behind me in the dust, this bloke sat on my arse for about 20ks before rounding me up after I pulled over.he was driving a Porsche 4wd and towing a new kimberley camper. Thing was worth a fortune but he drove like a maniac. Caught up to him at musgrave where he was having lunch,so e didnt gain that much on my old patrol.

Bamaga and Seisia are currently $2.70lt for both diesel and ULP.

Is that right Geoff??

Back on the 10th April 09, you said that it was $1.80/litre !! (other fuel prices thread).

Last year when we were up there, we paid $2.15/litre for diesel, while Sydney prices were around the $1.70 mark. Prices currently are around the $1.14/litre mark.

I wonder what prices are being charged at the more "remote" locations - Bramwell Junction, Jardine River ??

What a bargain. Considering fuel is the major expense up that way, it is not too bad.

Well, it's certainly better than last year, but for those of us living here full time, not so much of a bargain. To get on my soap-box......This is more than 60 cents dearer than what they pay in Cairns at the moment - that also gets added on to the price of our groceries, goods, services....... I know the Weipa Town Authority has been questioning the price of fuel here in comparison to down south, and the price difference is exacerbated even more further north and on the islands. Some mark up is to be expected, but more than an extra 33% !!!! That's over 60c a litre in transport costs, for fuel transported by barge or ship. Don't think so!

Totally understand where you are coming from barney. I used to live in Weipa and couldn't understand why prices were much higher, particularly fuel which is shipped direct to Weipa from overseas. The fuel should actually be cheaper than areas south as there is less transport and handling involved.
There was a fella there a few years ago that started to ask a few questions to the right people and the prices dropped overnight. Goes to show something doesn't it.
The shops can also be a little heavy on their freight too. Most locals will actually get together and put in a bulk order for groceries (and grog) and get it freighted up themselves and save a lot of money. At least that is what used to happen.
I know the guys at Bowyers were the best to deal with at the time but not sure if they are still there.
Keep in mind this may have all changed since I was living there but I very much doubt it.

By the way, diesel in Townsville is currently sitting around $1.10 ltr
