'Queensland Transport is constructing a new recreational boat ramp at Seisia. Construction will commence early October 2008 for 1 month depending on weather conditions.

Project Cost $110,000

Please take care around the construction site. We appreciate your patience during these works.

For further information, please call 1800 192 112 or email: marineprojects@mainroads.qld.gov.au'

Whooooo hooooooo. I think this calls for a celebration.

Carefull mate, before you know it you will have a bitumen road all the way and the boat ramp will be full. There will not be enough car parks and you will have to get up at 3 just to park.

Good knews for you guys anyway, it is something that has been needed for a long time.

I couldnt care less about parking at the ramp as i leave my car at a friends place. The main thing is it wont be covered by more than a metre of sand.

It's already bitumen all the way to that ramp Plucker, you mean now you'll have commodores launching them boats.

Just watch out they don't run out of money through the project. We had a mob do our ramp in the Claudie last year and on a lower tide there's a 2ft drop down to the water. Now i have to reverse to a 90 degree angle off the ramp and into the mangrove mud and then the water so i don't lose my trailer over the drop.

It will be a big change and should make fishing a lot more pleasant for the guys at Sesia when they retrieve their boats out.

Sounds a lot like the old jackey jackey boat ramp. They had a cage as well in the water so they could work on the ramp without the fear of crocs. Upon finishing construction of the ramp, they just pushed all the mesh into deeper water off the ramp and became a navigation hazard.

anywhere back down south in mainstream society you would be called an environmental vandal. It's amazing what people do cause they can get away with it.

Yep, thats very true. Mind you though, it just like everything else up here from housing to dogs and boats. The proper authorities could have a field day if they ever decided to intervene and its not until the last couple of months that have started to take an interest.

The consruction of the boat ramp at Seisia has been completed. The only thing left to do is to get access to it. Basically, all the ramp is is concrete tiles woven together in a mesh and laid down on the sand. The idea behind this that when the sands levels shift, tha ramp will move with it. I will post some pics of it here next week.

Now all they need to do is create access so everyone can use it.

So what happens with that set up it get's buried with sand never to be seen again, I guess if there was water constantly moving over it it would stay fairly well clear, see how it goes over time.

From what i heard, although i'm not sure if its true, is that it is in sections and can be lifted up with a forklift and re-set. Only time will tell i guess.

Ah I see a permanent tempory boat ramp. Maybe they could use some of those things in the dams they stock and just move them up or down to suit the seasons.

The boat ramp is not holding up with the extra high tides mixed with tidal surges, big waves and lots of rain. I havnt seen it yet but i am told that it is on a lean and is not usable.

The ocean has been that high that it has come into the carpark and it is about 1ft below the top of the jetty. A friend come across on Peddell's this morning and it was really rough. She said that you could feel the catarmaran lean right over to the side.

Geoff,
Try to get some pics of what things look like up there at the moment. A lot of people don't get to see, or understand what the place is like when things get wet and rough.

Yeah, I've seen on the news there's supposed to be a bit of a blow up there at the moment.
Must make life interesting.

Yeah, there is a bit. A friends carport got destroyed this morining. He car was getting unloaded off Seaswift today. If it had of been tomorrow there would have been one mangled car under the carport. A large tree in the neighbours yard decided to fall.

I hope, considering the conditions, everyone escapes relatively free of damage.

I read this morning that the BOM have down graded cyclone Charlotte to a tropical low, now that must make you feel much more comfortable.

Mmmmm, not really. Just means a lot of rain. Ant was saying there is localised flooding allready in Cairns. I think its heading straight for them isnt it?

On the otherhand, it might pull some of this rain down towards it and we could have some nice weather. Who knows.

For us in Townsville when the Low has gone further south the weather usually clears up and seas calm down.
Cant see why it would be any different for you guys up there.

It all depends on how strong the "low" is. Hopefully it be able to suck all this cloud and rain down with it.

No worries, it is only water and it will drain away eventually.
83mm had fallen at my place by 5pm and it has continued since then.
High tide today saw the boat ramps water up to the carpark.
Could have launched your 7M tinny off the breakwall today.

Has council opened up the new ramp Geoff?

Is it working to what they engineered to do (no sand build up)?

If it's open, do you have to drive across the soft stuff to get to it?

sorry about the q's, i was just wondering and thought other forum members might also be curious.

G'Day Stacky,

There has not been a build up of sand on it yet but sand has washed out in parts and caused a wave effect on the northern side of the ramp itself.

They still have not really provided good access to it. As mentioned earlier they had funding for the ramp but not access to it. All they have done now is remove one section of the boat ramp parking area cordon. From here you have to drive across a bit of soft sand to get to the ramp.
