No shacks for about 90km where this pic was taken. Plenty of room to pitch a tent though.

Shack or Pic? The nearest pic was taken at the Jardine River. As for the nearest shack, there are none for sale but a couple north of Mutte Heads that you could use. There are none down the east coast.

All jokes aside, at present there is no freehold land available on the mainland up here. The nearest freehold would have to be on Prince of Wales, Thursday Island or Horn Island. And land and housing up here is very expensive too.

For interests sake, you can have a look at torresstraitrealestate.com.au
or weiparealestate.com.au
Prices are nuts - a 800 sq. m block of land on POW, where there is no power, travel to TI by dinghy, is for sale for $225 000 - and then you would have to build something with appropriate cyclone rating. The last of the cheap places on Prince of Wales Island was sold a few months ago - a very basic shack on Long Beach, about 45 mins by boat to TI, on 2 acres, went for $300 000. Would have made a great fishing tour operation base. They're now asking over $500 000. Still seem to be some cheap little places further south around Rossville.
Thanks Barney. Don't worry, I've already been looking at Rossville and all around those areas. Just hoped there might be something further North.
Cheers,
xina.
