Well guys and gals, i just bought a Tentcot and i must say i am in love with it allready. I have used it once so far and it takes all the hassles out of setting up a tent and fly. It folds up nice and small and fits into a carry bag and you can turn it onto a lounge chair as well. They have sewed a mattress into the bottom also.

Here is some blurb on it-

"The Oversize" is Kamp-Rite's next generation.

With an extra 10cm in width and 15cm in length, a domed top for additional head room, and supporting up to 160kgs, The Oversize is designed to accommodate our larger customer. Super-sturdy, we added an additional set of support legs to allow entry & exit at all four openings, and like all the other Tent Cots, it comes with "no-see-um" mesh netting on each opening to assure plenty of ventilation and a bug-free sleep!

Dimensions of "The Oversize"
Bed Size: 228cm L X 81cm W
Tent Size: 228cm L X 81cm W X 101cm H
Folded Size: 86cm L X 86cm W 16cm D
Weight: 11 kgs

Accessories for "The Oversize" include:
Seal taped Rainfly
Gear Storage Bag

Their website is www.tentcot.com if anyone wants to know more. They come in 3 different sizes. The 'Original", 'Oversize and the 'Double' Well worth the money.

Hi xina,

I bought mine from south australia, a 4wd camping store before i realised i could have bought one from cairns. I was lucky enough to find it on special and even with freight cost and ferry fees wound up cheaper than full price.

The only thing i can fault with the double is that it has a bar running down the middle for extra support. You cant lay in the middle of the cot as its not very comfortable. You have to lay either side of the bar. This is not really a problem for me as it provides extra storage out of the elements.

I am loving the look of these for my 2 young kids when we do day trips around the place, and they need a sleep - at the moment we take a port-a-cot, or the youngest one sleeps in a pram under a tree somewhere - always worried about ants, insects etc, especially if its a wild almond tree. These tent-cots would make things heaps easier - they can't fall out, they're off the ground, well ventilated, with a mattress......just have to convince my husband they are worth the money - I'm sure he'll be sold on the prospect of more fishing time!

Good thinking Barney. Push that aspect a bit more, and you're sure to get at least 1.

BCF have a similar camp bed to the Cot Tent, made by Kookaburra (Tent Bed)
for $179.00 each. One size only I think. Couldn't try this one, as they only had them packaged. None on display, which was a shame, as I wanted to see how stable it was as well as ease of entry and exit.

xina,
We have the 'original' Tent-Cot for the big Cape York trip (leaving on Friday the 31st of October). Everyone on the trip will be sleeping in them so I will be able to give you a good run down on them once I get back. We will also be covering these in an article in the 2009 edition. We have four of the original and four of the oversize.

Hi Ant,
The one I tried at Campco was a double. From the illustrations, the entry for the "Original" looks slightly higher, which would be good. I found I had to really hunch up to get into the double, which made it awkward. Might have been a bit tired at the time as well, as I'd been on the run all day.
Getting excited about the trip?
Cheers,
xina.

Hi xina,
Not excited about the trip yet. Still so much to do that I am not sure I am going to get it all done. I still have to finish layout for November Fish and Boat and a Seafood Cookbook I am also working on. I won't be thinking about the Cape trip until Wednesday, and we leave on Friday morning.
Luckily, I do these trips pretty regularly and things are in some sort of order.

Hi Ant,
Where are you getting your recipes from? I didn't think there would be room for another Seafood Cookbook. Good Luck with them both. You sure don't mind working under pressure, do you?

Don't believe in burning the candle at both ends. I also like to light it in the middle as well.
Don't want to die wondering.

Thanks Ant,
They look delicious. I like the format of the book. Reminds me a bit of Bill Harneys' Cookbook. Found another copy of that the other day. The one I had first was stolen, and I never thought I'd be able to replace it, but within a month now, I've found 2.

Any news on these??

I just brought a 6 man tent today for the Cape. Which I had known about them before.

MMM what to do with the tent now.

Maybe there should be a new post from a few wise of what you need and dont need in the cape?

I know personal choice will come into it a little.

I have a few different ways that I camp in the Cape depending on time of year and who I am traveling with.
Firstly I have a swag which is fine when it is just me and I want to 'rough' it.
Secondly I have a tent cot which takes up less room and is a little faster to set up and more comfortable.
Third is my hammock which is for the summer and when times are really tight. I do love the freedom of the hammock though.
Fourth is my tent although I have to admit that I don't like the extra time it takes to set up and the fact that it is easy for dirt and sand to get in.
fifth is something I don't have yet but am aiming at having by the end of this year - a rooftop camper style. TJM have one called an 'open sky' and they are apparently bringing another style out in a few months. I am hoping to have one for the Tag-A-Long this year.
Sixth- just sleep in the cruiser.......

If i am by myself it is nice and easy and can vary from sleeping in the seat in the cruiser to a tarp and self inflating mattress on the ground. If i am a away for more than a couple of days, then the Tentcot comes into play. Once the missus and bubs comes along, thats when everything including the kitchen sink goes. :( For this setup is a large tent, 2 self inflating mattresses and a port-a-cot.

If I am by myself I use either a swag or if it is a Postie Bike ride then it is a small 1 man tent
If I take my partner I use what I call a bus tent or 9' x 9' Touring Tent, the ones the hire companies use with 4 tent pegs and 1 centre pole or with a side pole kit. Actually this is the brand, Southern Cross Ultimate 9 http://www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au/tents.htm . Very quick to erect and I am usually choking down the first beer while my mates are still setting up their 5 star versions. Pisses them off every time.

No more gas lights with those bloody jets that block up easily. I use a Coleman Northstar dual fuel lantern. Can't kill 'em.

Keep it simple and hassle free

Glen
