I know there has been discussion elsewhere on the different movies that are available on the Cape, I thought I would share my opinion of a DVD I have just purchased.
I was at the recently held 4WD, Fishing and Boating show in Brisbane, while there I bought a couple of DVD's.
One of the DVD's I bought is titled:-
FULFIL THE DREAM.
This DVD was found along side the lifestyle video 'Cape York, the Great Adventure' and was similarly priced.
As they were both the same price I expected them to be of a similar quality.
WRONG
The Fulfil Your Dream DVD is nothing more than a home movie, shot on handycam or similar, showing a couple of guys catching nice fish.
At one point in the movie the cameraman admits to being affected by alcohol while filming.
The movie offers no useful information at all.
If you like to see blokes in a boat catching good fish then this is the movie for you.
If you would like to learn something about locations, bait or lures while watching the movie, I expect you'll be sadly dissapointed.
The camera work may be fine for a home movie, but is below standard for something you pay for.
But this is just my opinion.
Given the choice again I would invest my money in a couple of lures.

I agree, i got it for christmas. It's a big pile of you know what.
Nedly,
Great to see an honest review and not just someone praising a product. With the advent of cheaper video cameras and budget video editing software, it is opening up a lot more 'backyard' products.

I picked up a couple of DVD's last year about trips to the Cape off ebay of all places they were only $20 or something they were selling quite a few of them one was called "4wd Cape York" which I just checked and is still selling on ebay, the other one was called "This way to the Cape York" the first one was shot in 1987 it was just a bunch of blokes from Brizzy on a trip up the Cape the second one was the some of the same blokes doing the trip again in 2007 "Discovering Australia with Thommo Cape York " and for what they were small time productions, I thought they were fairly good and fairly informative of course when they finish it always leaves you wanting more..

There are some good ones and some bloody crook ones.Ive watched a few but nothing like your own Cape York Production. My wife took 10 hrs of video on a tip in 2004 and I ended up making 3 x 1hr DVD's.They turned out alright and I have made all my rellos watch them. But thats as far as I go.Ive lent them to people getting ready for a trip and scares the daylights out of their wifes when they see our trailer in half or stuck in the middle of a creek and the 4b full of water.

Some of the older movies can be good, allows you a chance to see what you've missed out on and gives that little more incentive to get up there.
Leaving you with a desire to go check the place should be the end result of watching any film of the Cape.
Home movies are a great medium for storing your memories and experiences, to be shared with family and friends, and that's how it should be.
Movies that are produced for commercial distribution should be prepared professionally, using suitable equipment by suitably trained people. Proper editing of the film before distribution will make or break a film and should also only be done by proffesionals.
The purchase price of these movies can be justified by the equipment costs, salaries, production costs etc.
Let's face it, the movies that come 'free' with some magazines are in fact a couple of blokes getting out and doing, but it's done profesionally and they can be enjoyable to watch. At the very least you will get some information from the movie, useful or not.
I am at a lost to understand the justification behind the cost of FULFIL THE DREAM.
Off setting the cost of your holiday by selling your home movie is not enough.
I think I've said enough.
Apologies for my little tirade, but I hate feeling ripped off.

Give me Malcolm Douglas or the Bush Tucker Man any time, even through in a few Crocodile hutner DVDs. I like my own Cape DVDs and thats what they are and I lend to people who want an idea on what we done. If i pay for something i expect quality.

Hi Guys,
You may already know, but just in case you haven't seen them yet, and are interested, SAMS, [AKA The Warehouse] now has some 4x4 DVD's that look interesting if that's your thing, for around 20 bucks.
Cheers,

Ant, Maybe thats something you could add to Cape York Merchandise.Another way to promote the Cape.
John
Hi John,
I am working on a DVD for Cape York at the moment.
At this stage, it will be available free on the front cover of the 2010 edition. We have done some initial footage this year and will be completing the project during 2009 - providing all goes to plan.
Hi Guys,
I found a 1999 Video produced by the 4X4 Australia Magazine, titled, CAPE YORK, A Traveller's Guide. Has anyone seen it? I haven't had a chance to have a look yet. The 96 page Guide Book is still with it.
Cheers,
xina.

xina,
That sounds interesting. When we eventually catch up, you will have to bring it with you.
This may sound a little far fetched, but maybe a movie night while we are away on the tag-a-long??

How Ant? I'm all for it, but how would you manage that. It's not a DVD.

xina,
Where there is a will, there is a way.
Video can be converted to DVD. Just like vinyl can be converted to CD.

That's great Ant. I'll bring it when I come up. Just got back home. Looks like every-one else has been having a great Xmas too.
If you'd like, I'll bring some of the DVD's I've got that are about the North, and the Islands. You could see what might be suitable.
Cheers,
xina.

I picked up a boxed set on the weekend, the Brisbane Caravan & Camping Show, 6 DVD's in the set covers Cape York, Tasmania etc.
The show seems to be more about products rather than actual places, also the show jumps around a bit from place to place.
Not a whole lot of info to be had but worth having a look.
What is the asking price uo there?
More than $15?

The cost of the DVD was $19.90. Your right in saying it doesnt have a whole lot of info and it does jump around a lot. Mainly product promotion and such. There is a bit of good footage in it, just not a lot.
I wouldnt buy it again.

I was on fraser about 100m from pat callinan when he was filming the fraser dvd from that collection. 95% of his funding is from product placment. personally i think he should have been able to get finance based on his name. and when his series screened on channel 10 i was very dissapointed. being i see fraser from my backyard it just didnt give it justice.
I wonder what it would cost to make a decent dvd about the cape. from car selection buying accesories all without endorsement!!!

Funny you should mention that.
I have been working on a DVD production on Cape York and to do it properly you are looking at an initial budget of about $2-300,000.
This includes filming, editing, production and all travel and associated costs.
Rest assured, the DVD will be out and will set a precedent for Cape York.

Hey Geoff,
Here's a link to it on Ebay. Yes, there was a series 2, and it is the Yarraki River that they travel to.

Geoff,
I googled it, and came across an article in Explore Oz.

It appears that it is the local Aboriginal name for the Olive River.

Geoff,
I managed to borrow a copy of Series 2. Had a squiz of it this morning. The Yarraki River show is over 2 episodes. I quickly remembered watching it when it was shown on TV.
Those guy's really blended fishing & humour well together. Not sure about the wading in the mangroves to chuck a fly though......
It is certainly a magic part of Australia !

I dont remember them being altogether thorough when they went to an area but the thing that really made it a great show was their humour.

Your right. The episodes were fairly general.....not something that you could use as research to visit an area.
Wouldn't it be great to have the money though to float around in a yacht, fish remote areas, and have a helicopter as a support vehicle. Perhaps I should've taken a ticket in the recent lotto draw.....
Their aussie humour though was what really made the show work.

Yeah, doesnt work. I tried that last week. :D
This movie is based on a real happening, in NT. [I know it's not Cape York, but it might remind some-one to be a bit more careful. It could very well happen up there too.]
Movie Title,[DVD] is BLACK WATER.
Very worthwhile getting.
