Fess up Ant......
Mate,
Unfortunately you are right. The old girl spat oil just five minutes out of Coen and ended up being towed from there to Cairns. Don't know what the problem is but hope to know more in the next few days.

Gee Ant,I hope the old Toyota will be OK.At least you took it home with you and not leave it for a bush burial like so many old tojos,
Maybe time to upgrade.

Time to hide Ant,
Campdogs on line......
He must have smelt that something was happening.....
(edit....too late !! :-) )
No need to hide. Problems happen to all makes and models no matter how up to date with servicing you may be.
As for the tow truck- no idea what brand it was but lets just say that it did the job- thank god!

Your exactly right Ant,it does happen to all vehicles.Just better when its a Toyota.
Now, now, be nice boys. Don't forget Ants' vehicle travels those roads a lot more than yours do.
Cheers,
xina.

Your right there xina,he does have a lot of Cape kilometers under his belt. You never know when something like that can happen.Nothing worse than having a vehicle let you down.I just hope it was on the way home and not the start of the trip.Even the best prepared vehicles can fail.(some of them anyway)

Your dead right xina.Im always looking for a chance to poke fun of a Toyota and driver.Sometimes the best prepared vehicles can and will let you down.Ants vehicle is a well travelled 4wd and would be well serviced.
No one likes to break down and have their 4wd put on display on the back of a Niisan tilt tray. It happens to the best of us,

How did the trip go by the way after you left here Ant?
Boy this thread is becoming popular!!
The trip on the whole was fantastic. Fishing in all areas was great and I also got to try out a few new toys too.
Once I get a little more time on my hands I will try to post up a more detailed report.

gday ant,
sorry to hear about the car dramas...at least it happened AFTER the secret spots by the sound of it.
being a cruiser, it probably something simple and CHEAP to fix, as opposed to them other wagons you see.
if it was oil pressure it may be as simple as a sticky oil pressure releif valve. happened to mine two years ago, kept blowing the arse out of oil filters.
i'll keep my fingers crossed for you ...but as its a cruiser, i'm backing you in!!
funny how people who dream about the north and live in the sth drive them other trucks, and everyone who lives in the north generally have a cruiser or other type of toyota...go figure??!!
cheers mate
Lucky for me, I had my mechanic on the trip with me. Don't know for sure yet but he thinks it is one of two things.
1: Oil cooler has gone.
2: Head or head gasket.
I was only 15 minutes (if that) into the drive on the morning and saw my water temp gauge rising so pulled over straight away and shut her down. When I lifted the hood I could hear a bubbling sound and saw oil spewing out of the radiator overflow.
See how things go in the next few days.

Not good to hear of your drama's Ant, don't like to hear of anyone having problems, regardless of the vehicle.
On the brighter side, at least it was at the right end of the trip.
Hope it doesn't end up being too painful.
Thanks Nedly,
Just got the official word: The alloy side-plate on the oil cooler had corroded. The area was as small as a match head but was enough for the damage to occur. Luckily the engine should be okay and the vehicle should be back on the road again next week.
Thankfully, I keep a close watch on all the guages otherwise it could have been a lot worse. Thankfully the whole recovery operation was also covered by RACQ. As they say, it pays to belong.
Only 5 more weeks till I head up again!!

well Ant, the weather has improved a lot since you left. Wind has dropped right off and bright blue skies overhead. Plus the fishing should be better by the time you back up here. Glad to hear there was nothing serious with the 4'by.

Dennis from coen would have run you back to cairns wouldn't he? anyway just shows the age of the old toyota if the engine is rusting away :)

Yeah, Dennis picked us up. I thought at one stage that Les might have come down from Weipa.
Looks like the old girl still has a few more trips in her though. Toyota's- can't keep a good thing down eh!

You wouldnt find too many old Toyota's out at the "Tip" up here mate, they stay in people's back yards for quite a few years until they rust out and there is not much left.

moo-moo: not sure what you mean by the last comment. Dennis (from Halfway at Coen) organised the recovery and the driver, who then drove the whole way back to Cairns.
