I have a 22 foot dugout canoe on the verandah of the centre here and have only just recently noticed insects rembling bumble bees boring holes into it. Upon doing research i found out that they are calles Carpenter Bees. I counted about 23 of the little buggers boring nesting in my canoe. The holes they make are about 1cm in diameter. Has anyone had any problems with these before? How do you get rid if them?
Hi Geoffy, have you tried smoking them out? Don't know if you'll find anything to help in the e-mails I sent.
Cheers,
xina.

Hi xina,
I recieved your emails and will try and get hold of a bee trap. Thanks. I might pop over the road this arvo and see Jackson Sailor from Quarantine. He might have one lying around out the back somewhere.

Pyrethrium scares most insects off and is generally harmless. Dont know what it would do to the canoe though.

Its a dugout i found around Crab Island Island in 2005. Its from New Guinea. I should imagine it would be ok to use Pyrethrium but will make some enquiries into it as well.
Did you have any luck moving them on Geoff?
Cheers,
xina.

Well, as of 4 weeks ago they were Carpenter Bee free. Pyrethrium seems to be the way to go. Only recently i have noticed them boring into a tree outside my house. Will have to spray there too.
