Anyone visiting the Cape north of the Jardine Ferry should be aware that there is a Black Jewfish closure in force.

The following information on the 'Black Jewfish Closure Area' at Cape York is from schedule 1 of the Fisheries Regulation Act 2008.

The closure area extends from-
-Crab Island (just south of the Jardine River),
-to Woody Wallis Island (about 20km northwest of Crab Island)
-to Possession Island
-to Eborac Island (island just off the tip of Cape York)
-to Albany Island (opposite Somerset)
-to Fly point (3km east of somerset on the mainland)
-and back in a south westerly direction back to Crab Island.

This closure will remain indefinitely.

You are still able to catch Jewfish in the Jackey Jackey, Middle, and Escape River Systems.

wow,

genius at work.....what they decide to wait till there were 2000 jew carcusses on the dump!! I (we) pay big money in taxes, permits, licenses etc etc, and beauracratic genius brings in a ban at the arse end of the jewie run.
Glad i'm paying top dollar, and wondering if the ban applies accross the board for ALL people. i know i sure as hell have never dumped a whole fish after making a pig of myself on a good hole.

Unbeleivable!!!

gday geoff....just had to get that of me chest....grrrrrr!

G'Day yetti,

Have to get out your way and have a yarn one day. Have you been busy?

The ban on the jewfish has been in since 2005, just that fisheries hadnt been enforcing it. Now they are. Some of the boys from Sunwater were out at Muttee a few months back and got pulled up by fisheries from T.I. Luckily they didnt have any on board.

I heard about this and i rang up fisheries on T.I. to confirm. I was told that only white people were banned from catching jewies. Indigenous people were still allowed to catch them.

I dont know if you remember bat but a couple of years ago some of the indigenous people were catching hundreds of jewies off the Seisia wharf and taking them away on palets. Since then we have seen a huge decrease in the numbers of fosh caught.

They have the nerve to ban us when they were the ones that almost decimated the jewie population.

I am not sure bat but i think there might be a loophole allowing Fishing Charter operations to catch jewies. You will have to check up on this.

hey chop,

yeah i remember, how could you forget. i knew about the original ban, i think 99 - 2003?? but i didnt know another had come into effect in 2005. you reckon they might have told commercial operators. i have since gone thru fisheries correspondence, and cannot find anything relating to the ban...go figure.

i agree with you about the decline in numbers, but .... as you well know...if you know where to look and when to fish 'em, there is still a few 'horses' around to test your metal. not that you were tareting them.

yup i been busy, fishing in the blue has been a bit harder for the last 10 days, water temp down, and wind 20-30 kn, but still been getting fish each day...just having to hunt a bit harder. The other day i was sth east of Johnson Is. Was blowing 25, bur funnily enough, it was worth the effort...ha-haaaa!

all good, and yes you should drop out for a beer....before i get blown off the beach!

anyhow i gotta go scrape barnacles...cant wait...sheesh
cheers mate.

You wont find it on their website, have to ring up. Its pretty sad really that they have not even put up any notices yet. How are people supposed to know that they cant catch them?

Am heading out next weekend for an overnighter to try and tangle with a few monsters out the east side. Didnt do very well last weekend, got a few fish but really had to work for them. Got a couple of nice barra though.

I miss Johnson Islet, havn't been out there for a couple of years. Planning too this year though. Do have a trip planned for December though in Chesapeake. Heading down to Temple Bay and islamd hop. Should be good fun.

I met Bat at 'Bait n Tackle' last year, was hoping to get out with him this year, but circumstances prevented that.
Will definately be chasing him up for a trip next year, so you've been warned.

Was talking with the dude at Jardine Ferry on our return, he told me I should have been out at Muttee the week before, "all the locals were out in their dinghys catching Black Jew".
Isn't it always the case, You should have been here last week :(, story of my life.
BTW, I caught nothing while camping there.

You really need a boat and know where to go. As is the story with anywhere i guess. As for Bat, he is a great guy to go out fishing with. He knows how to find the fish allright.
