Hi I'm a nurse planning to work soon in Aurukun does anybody out there know much about that area? About food prices and how I get about without a car and if it's safe to walk around on my own? and any other other general info??

Hi Sharon,
I know a little about the area. Food will be slightly dearer and if you have some way of bringing up some of your 'favourites' then that will be best as variety will also be limited.
As for a vehicle, it is handy to have one but not essential as you will find other people who can get you around. The closest town (Weipa) is best to go to for other supplies and most times, people heading up there (1.5hr drive each way) will let others know so you can jump on board.
Safety is a hard one to pin down. I have walked the streets there at night a few times and have felt very safe but I was also with a mate who was well known there.
Get to meet as many people as you can (teachers, community members, police,etc)

Having a love for the outdoors is a must in a place like Aurukun. There is so much to see and do and it really is a very unique community.

Hope you don't think I am being too personal, but your age and martial position would be nice to know as this may effect how you get on there.
