Dave,
Scaling and gutting fish: prefer not to do it near camp and make sure you take the fish rubbish with you or take it far away from camp (and not near other campers- unless they are Nissan drivers)
As for camping; you have to use your discretion. I have camped right near the water and also as far away as I can in other areas. There is no simple rule or no right way for all cases.
Camp rubbish: pack it into the vehicle and take it to the closest dump.
Snake bite: consult your first aid people for proper treatment.
Always carry an EPIRB on the cape and a sat phone also helps.
As for the land holder- I don't blame him as there are some irresponsible people out there.

Hi Dave,
In regards to sat phones, I personally would not buy the Globalstar ones as they have troubles picking up a reception lately. The reason for this is last year they took down 6 of their satellites nand havnt yet replaced them.
Saying that though, if you allready have one. 20 minutes to every hour (eg. 1.40, 5.40, 8.40 etc.) is the best time to make your calls as this is when one of the remaining sats will be over head.
I tried one of the new sat phones that came out earlier this year by the name of Iridium. I was in a three story building on the bottom floor and there was heavy cloud cover and there was no hassle getting a signal. There is a hefty price tag with the unit though. $2600. You can get a subsidy if you live in a remote area.
Ok i think i should show you guys and girls this new device

Where do you get them for that price?
The SPOT website says it's about US$179 + US$99 for basic service and another US$50 for tracking/google earth ability.
Also, the top of the Cape/Gulf area looks like it's on the border of the best reception/coverage area, so I wonder how reliable coverage up here would be?
Cheers,
Mick

Dave,
To clarify your point about EPIRBs being replaced. This is not exactly true. The old system (121.5 MHz, or 243 MHz) are being phased out and will no longer be accepted after the 1st of November this year. The new (406 MHz) digital EPIRBs will be replacing them and you can already purchase the new models (it has been this way for over a year now).
Be sure that the system you are talking about (SPOT) is running on the new digital frequency otherwise it will not work over here. I would say that they are but just check to be on the safe side.
Hope this makes sense.

Thanks mate! Looks good ... I just don't like the $150-$200 per year after the initial purchase. I own a GPS and an EPIRB, so really don't need a spot - cool though!
Cheers,
Mick

$4.00 per minute or part there of, ie, 59 seconds = $4.00, 61 seconds = $8.00.
I rented one for our trip this year, the cost was quite reasonable.
I'll post the name of the company and cost later (when I remember).
In coming calls were at no cost to me, and cost the caller the same as a mobile call.
Outgoing calls were as above.
My only real complaint was the battery life, very short.

Telsta Next G sim works in an iridium phone. You just need to get global roaming turned on.
Call costs are about twice as dear as on a plan. (but no monthly payments) You get charged for outgoing calls & the caller gets charged for incoming calls (cost as above).
You can get the old model from EBAY or from the US for about $600.
If you can get one from Australia, (telstra used to have the franchise and you got GSM as well as iridium, the US ones dont usually have GSM)) you can set them up to try the normal mobile first, if no service then sat phone.
Just uses the mobile number rather than a special iridium number.
If you go for a plan seriously consider one of the US carriers as its usually cheaper (it doesn't matter where you pay your money the service is global)
Some bad reports on SPOT ..I don't think you cant tell if the message has been actually sent AND recieved. (that depends on where the satelites are at the time)

Bernie, I thought about buy a sat phone but couldn't justify the cost.
The only reason I had it at all was because the in-laws (never again) were with us, they're a little old and the phone was for emergency purposes.

Know where you are coming from there Nedly. My inlaws are always nagging me about being carefull up here. The time i picked them up from cairns and brought them up was a very frustrating time indeed. Almost made them walk. :p
