A little while back, we were discussing a tag-a-long trip for Forum members (The Croc Crew). To get to the next level, lets look more seriously at dates for next year. September is usually a good all round time to travel and the school holidays for QLD run from the 19th of September to the 4th of October. Can those interested let me know their thoughts and we will see if we can make this all happen.
I have picked school holidays as most of us will be traveling with children and I would like to try and involve the whole family in the Cape York experience.

Once we have got some dates fixed, we can then work on the itinerary. I think Nedly will be the one to put that together for us as he has it all under control.

I would aim at involving all interest levels and will even look at taking the Nissan drivers as we all want a bit of a laugh while sitting round the campfire at night.

Thanks for that Ant, I'd be happy to do the itinerary for the trip.
I expect the meeting place for the tour would be your place, bit of a BBQ and drinks on arrival, sounds good.
How many does your place sleep?

I hadn't actually planned on doing 3 trips in a row but hey, why not.
Let me get back to you.
Any date is fine with me, our kids are all growd up, so not a problem.

I'm already planning for Cape Trip No 11, but at this stage I'm looking at September 2010 !

Thinking about a family holiday to Tasmania next year, for a change.

Hey xina,
The trip is still in its planning stage so I see no reason why we can't fit a few days in there for you.

Sounds like things are getting serious!
Lets get Nedly on the job once he gets back from the Cape so that we can work out some definite dates and places to go to. Sounds like it is going to be one hell of a trip.

I talked to a ranger about temple Bay and it can be pretty late in the dry before you can get in,Also bookings are usually full 12 months prior.I think it is booked in 1 week blocks.Batesy has more info on the place.

I just talked to the ranger at the australia zoo site and we have verbal pre-approval to go through there camp and on to bertihaugh.... It should be a fun stretch I can show you guys a few nice little spots around the stones area are we going before or after the wet season though I vote after the wet just as it starts to dry a little so there is still some good river crossings.

P.S. as much as this is a public forum please don't tell anyone but the people who will be coming about the stones crossing stretch cheers sam.

Hhhmmm, a tag-along itinerary.
An itinerary for a group of people who, for the most part, have been there before.

Where to start?

OK, let's start with this:

To be able to prepare what I think will be a suitable itinerary I first need to know a few things.

1. DATES
Working on the assumption the will be school aged people joining us for this tour we will work around school holidays, as per Ant's initial post.
I'm sure this will be the first point of contention as not all states have holidays on the same date.
QLD & VIC = 19 Sept to 4 Oct incl. (17 days)
SA, ACT & WA = 26 Sept to 11 Oct (17 days)
NT = 26 Sept to 4 Oct (10 days)
NSW = 3 Oct to 18 Oct (16 days)
TAS = 5 Sept to 20 Sept (16 days)
These dates have been sourced from the relevant state education web sites.

What dates do we select?

2. DURATION
My proposed start/finish point for the tour is Mareeba. The tour to have a duration of 21 days start top finish.

Is this acceptable?

3.NUMBER OF VEHICLES
The number of vehicles will in some cases determine where we can go, likewise the type and size of vehicle will have a similar impact.
Will there be vehicles towing camper or boat trailers?

4. POINTS OF INTEREST
Specific points of interest to be visited during the tour. Are there "special" places that are known to a few that could be shared with the tag-along?
There will be the usual standard/mandatory stops such as Weipa, the Tip (group photo opp.), Chili Beach maybe.
Are there any "secret" places you would like to share? Send me a PM if you would like to maintain the general secrecy.

5. MUST SEE/DO
What do you expect from this tour?
Are you interested in Indigenous, European or natural history?
Do you wish to spend time fishing?
Want to visit Thursday, Horn or Friday Islands?

While I'll endeavour to satisfy everyones wishes, there are bound to be some disappointments. As they say, you can't please all the people all the time.
I also propose to limit the number of vehicles in the tag-along, though I'll wait for responses first.
I can guarantee the convoy will be much less than 38 vehicles.

I'll keep an eye on this trip. We are planning on doing our first trip to the cape next year and given we are going alone a tag along such as this might be a good idea. Just depends on what you guys decide to see and do.
