Hi all.

Been planning my cape trip for the past two years and all was running well. Built a new camper trailer and got the landcruiser set up for the trip.

We travelled up with friends in two other vehicles and got as far as Lakefield Nat Pk when my two year old daughter fell into the coals in the fire-ring from the fire the night before and burnt her hand (third degree). Cooktown hospital recommended that we didn't continue our travels because of the risk of infection so have now arrived back home in Brisbane, 9 days after starting off our 4 week adventure. Her hand is okay but the people at the burns unit in Brisbane agree it was the best decision to come back because it needs daily medical attention. Hard decision to make but not really if you know what I mean.

Already planning our trip for next year...

Good move .it may of got infected up there very easy, sorry to here about your trip ending so soon . but you did the right thing ,would of been very sore as well por little thing!
you prob didnt get a chance but
if your camping near a creek it allway pays to put it out with a buck or two of water, rather than just sand as it can stay hot for days and catch out other unsuspecting travlers out !

well adlest you seen some . i been ready to leve and just broken my wrist so my trip up this year ended as well .i know howyou feel beleve me:p

Geeze. You guys are really having a run of bad luck. Sorry to hear about your trip. By the sounds of it you will still be doing the trip next year so if you look at it that way it really isnt a loss. And next time you wont have to do all the sight seeing on the way up to cooktown. You can spend more time up this way.

I agree with Dave as well. I have known a couple of people that stepped on an area of sand and there still has been hot coals under neath. Water is the best option.

Anyway mate, take care and see you next year.

Medical things are difficult up there. I was at the Jardine mouth and had an infection start up near my wisdom tooth that had been removed 6 weeks earlier.

Ever see a dentist up there. I dont think so.

I hurt a bit and could barely raise a smile the next day when I caught a 1.1 meter barra, but thems the breaks.

red61,
Sad news about cutting the trip short, but as everyone has already said, your daughters well being is far more important. Better that she heals properly so that she can enjoy the next trip even more.

Good luck with the planning for next year.

Red,

You made the right call there mate. I know how you would have been feeling through. All that planning and then that to happen to your little girl. I've got a boy 18mths now and he would have come first too. It can be down right disheartening but at least your little girl will get the right treatment in Brisbane.

I hope she heals up quickly without any problems.

If you’re going next year now the family and I might just see you up there.

All the best.

Hey red61,
Always sad to hear of injuries, especially for the little ones.
They rely on us completely, but you know that.
Hope your daughter heals well with no lasting scars etc.

Her hand is healing well and is starting to grow its own skin which is a good thing i.e. no skin grafts necessary.

From now on the fire will get a bucket of water before we go to bed, not just when we pack up camp. Live and learn they say. They also say "A fool learns from his mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others" so hope this helps somebody.

Already got two other vehicles wanting to come with us next year :)
