Anyone done the run from Karumba up the Burke development road then across to the Peninsula development road just looking at the map there is a track, looks like you take the road to Kowanyama but you turn off fairly quickly on to another track 200 odd km's that brings you out near Artemis about 23 km short of Musgrave on the Penisula Dev road. Will be around 486 km trip from Karumba to Musgrave
I am going to head up the Isa and Normanton, Karumba on next years trip then short cut across to the Cape if I can.
I am not sure about access to the track you are talking about, but my advice would be to contact Musgrave Station (07 4060 3229) and ask them about it.
Let us know what the outcome is as this may be of interest to other travelers.

Mate of mine did this track a couple of years ago, I'll have a word with him and post what I find out.
Better yet, I'll see if I can get him to register, that way he can tell you himself.

I have travelled on the road from Karumba to the turn off to Kowanyama, near Dunbar station about 18 months ago.
The road was first class for dirt and we only had to open 3 gates, all near Dunbar.
There is a fantastic camping spot on the Southern bank of the Gilbert River which is high and overlooks the creek.
Near Dunbar homestead there is also a good camp on the Mitchell River.
From what I have been told the road to Kowanyama is much the same and probably would vary from time to time.
Kowanyama is a zero alcohol place!!! - scared us.

I am heading into Kowanyama at the end of this month. I can give you a report on the roads then.

That's the way I am talking about, it would save a heap of time. and I hear that it's pretty good fishing in the Mitchell River as well.
Check this link out for up to date extensive road reports for all or most of the cape http://www.cook.qld.gov.au/council/Roads/currentstatus.shtml

Highlift,
I am planning to take this route down and back if my plans fall together this September. I have the contacts of the station owners to get permission to cut through this way. i have been told this route is not to difficult and there is a number of dry creek crossings that make it slow from the south Musgrave turnoff to the Kowanyama road (Bourke Dev).
I will be able to give you full details and contacts when my plans come together probably a little closer to September.
