I'm heading off to Cairns on Sunday morning to pick up subscribers magazines and I should be back Wednesday.

I'll be sure to give everyone a road condition report once I get back.

So stay tuned.

What sought of caravan do you have Raymond an on roader or an offroader, As the onroad caravans don't last long up there on the dirt roads as others here can testify to by the odd wrecked caravan they would of seen laying just off the road in the scrub.

"Subscribers magazines" ????

Are you referring to the 2008 edition of the Cape Yorker ????

If so, drive VERY carefully :)

we have a jayco heritage alloy frame on tamden axle which is higher than road vans . we have a turbo 100 series cruiser towing the van

we have been told it would be best to use a tech hitch in loo of standard ball hitch, what do u think of this idea/?

tks for your input

Hi Raymond,

Whilst I would have some reservations about towing a large van into the Cape, my comments would be:
1) A Treg style Hitch would definately be a benefit
2) I would guess that providing you take all necessary care, you should make Weipa fairly comfortably. There a many dips, bumps, creeks and bulldust areas along the track, but I've seen vehicles and trailers of all shapes & sizes make the trip.
3) Heading north along the PDR from the Weipa turnoff to Bramwell Roadhouse would be pushing the envelope in my opinion. Unless you HAVE to take it there, I would be leaving it in Weipa.

Hope this helps.

Im in agreeance with you scorcher,Ive seen some off road vans on the cape but there are some big dips around the archer river area as well. There was a lot more tar sections last year but it depends on how much you want to put your van through.
Most people i have met up with usually take the Van as far as cooktown or Mosman by tar and leave it there and do the cape out of the back of the 4wd or even hire a trailer. The contents of a van would have to be packed pretty good to avoid self destruction on the corrugations, no matter what speed yo go.

Raymond Weipa would be about as far as I would drag a van as well, some of those dips in the road and the corragations will wreak havoc on your van, long stretches of bulldust towing a van you would get bogged down in it fairly quickly, If you do take it off road one thing I would look at installing to the front of your van would be some kind of stone deflector if your fairly handy with a welder they are easy to knock up with some light steel tubing and some shade cloth and fit it to the A frame in front of the body it will stop a lot of stone damage to the front of the van as some of the rocks that get thrown up could punch holes through the front panelling and stones being flicked up can cause a lot of peppering, it's just something else to think about if you are going to do it.
