For those people planning a trip to Cape York, are you aware of the Alcohol Restrictions in place throughout the various indigenous communities ?????

With the fines pretty hefty, it is worth knowing that they exist, and that they can vary from community to community. Some communities are completely "dry", whilst others have limitations on the type, strength, and quantity of alcohol that can be transported within their identified boundaries.

With the amount of signage and pamphlets located throughout the cape, ignorance is no excuse.

And a simple "mistake', could ruin the trip of a lifetime.

Check out the link below, which will advise you of the current restrictions.

Happy travelling.

Scorcher, another place well worth stopping on the way up is the quarintine station at Coen. They have a free Cape York information pack, loaded with maps and information on resrictions etc.Well worth the stop.On the way back you must stop.

Good point Campdog.

I was also going to put up a DPI thread, but can't find a decent link which clearly identifies the restrictions.

Any idea's ??

Its preety hard to get a clear description of the restrictions.probably changed from last year. We had no trouble as we were at Virilya Point and its not coverered by the restriction zones.Different story if going into communities.
It can be to easy to say its okI ll be alright but the end result may be a long walk home and big fines.

From talking to Ant last week, it appears that the Alcohol restrictions are currently being reviewed. There must be an easier way than having the "allowable cartage" change from community to community.

The link above should at least contain the current restrictions, with any changes updated as required. It gives a reasonable explanation of the restriction/Dry zones. But as you said, a quick pop into the Coen DPI, collect your brochures/maps etc, and away you go. No excuses then.

As for the DPI restrictions on transportation of fruit & veg's, that doesn't appear as easy to locate.

Heading north into The Cape, is not the issue. It is when you start heading south, and call into the Coen Quarantine Station that you are checked. It would be nice to locate a link to a site to clearly clarify it.

I'm still looking.......................

The only way we were aware of the quarintine on fruit and veges was beacause we stopped on the way up at Coen and got a Cape York information pack. The quatintine station is also a regular set up point for Qld fisheries.Another area where you must be up to date on catch numbers and species in possesion.A mistake here will cost car and boat, big fine and maybe a period behind bars.

A number of years ago the DPI Quaranteen Station was located at Laura.

I am guessing that they relocated to Coen as many people would have bypassed it by going through Lakefield NP. It has been located at Coen for at least the last 8 years I am guessing.

As you say, certainly worthwhile stopping in on the way North, to get the good oil on current restrictions.
