I thought that it may be worthwhile seeing who was planning a trip up to Cape York this year.
We're leaving on about the 29th May for a mad, 3 week Boy's Fishing Trip.
Who else is "Cape York Bound" ?

That's a bummer Campdog.
However, it will make you want to get there even more next year !!
Looks like I might have some luck getting your secret oyster spot from you now ?? Better check my PM's in case you have already sent me the directions ;) :o

Campdog- forgetting a wedding anniversary is a very very bad thing to do.
Why don't you prep your wife for next year by saying that you absolutely must go back to the Cape cause Ant needs you to do an article for him.
Also not sure if I can keep you company on the forum too much as I am planning at least four more trips up there this year.

No hope at all this year.My mate who I went with last year is going in a few weeks, worried about finding the turn off to Virilya, has been ringing all week. Here I am trying to get over not going and he keeps reminding me. Next year is a definite big trip. I will give the old patrol on last big trip. My daughter finishes year 12 this year and we have promised her a trip away.Again no one else thought the Cape was a good place for schoolies week.(I tried)
Ant, Im still in for that postie for a day article. as getting to Cairns is easier flying than driving. All need is a sponsor.

Yep- First week in June will see me on the dirt! Heading to the tip to touch base with all local businesses (and to do the odd spot of fishing along the way).

Sounds like a possibility we may cross paths.
We should be at Laura by Sat 31st May. May spend a couple of nights either on the way up, or way back, at the spot we spoke about the other night.
Should be somewhere between Vrilya Point and the Cotterill River from the 2nd June to about the 15th June, with a quick 2 day trip to the Tip and T.I. during that period.
I'll P.M. you before we head off.

Don't know about that Campdog !
This year is a boy's fishing trip, and Vrilya Point may not be on Ant's trip planning (no businesses there !).
Hoping to try a few of the Billabongs on the way home though. Might bump into Ant there, along with Miss Cape York 1951 !

Might bump into them a few days before we start heading out. Probably stay at Vrilya until the 12th or 13th June.
Most likely won't pass Taree this trip, as we normally take the New England Highway, but may be up that way in September.

Scorcher, just talking to mate and only two going in his 4b,they have only 3 weeks and look like taking 5 days to get there, staying about 12 days and 3 or 4 to get home. You wont miss these guys as they will have a wind generator up and running. nearly tempted to hitch a ride but I would like to keep my jewels for a few years yet anyway.

Tell them to keep an eye out for a white 80 series L/C with Kimberley Kamper & Tinny on top.
I might be able to fill them in on where the fish are biting :!:

Leaving Melbourne on the 8th August for 6 weeks.
Im secretly hoping that I never have to return home.
From home we will be going to Weipa, then the OTL, then back through Lakefield, then slowly home through Cairns from there.
ddr, We may cross paths. I am looking at heading up again at that time as a 'support' vehicle for a bunch of mad blokes on motorbikes.
Six weeks away sounds like a great plan to me- you'll love it.

Scorcher,You probablly already know this but for the sake as newies to Virilya. if your fishing outside at Virilya, make sure you have the best bait.we fished last year and didnt get amongst the good reef fish until we were given some good bait. Other baits were OK but frozen prawns and squid nailed the black spot wrass and emporer, and pilchards were a top bait as well. We used trevally and bluefin tuna but no where as good as prawns.

Campdog- what this about going up to the cape twice a year?? I am planning on four trips this year. June, August, Nov and then Dec. Cairns is a good place to be (if you can't live in the Cape) as it is still only just 'down the road'.
I am lucky because I can justify the Cape trips to my wife as 'business'. Hell, if the mag doesn't turn a profit (maybe one day it will), then I may as well try like hell to get the most out of it and have some fun!!
Don't forget the 'tag-a-long' for next year!

Campdog,
Yes, a block of Pillies & Squid are on the shopping list for Mareeba. Mix it up with some freshly caught Mullet & Whitebait (or whatever you call them up there), and some strips of Tuna, and all bases are covered.
Cast nets are essential up in the Cape. It's a long way to a fishing tackle shop to get more bait !
Actually, I remember my first trip to Vrilya Point in 1987. No bait & no bait net. The whitebait were so thick though, that a sinker on a piece of fishing line was enough to knock a few out of the schools for bait. We never went hungry, even though it was only Queenfish & Trevally caught from the shore.

Support vehicle, you're a top bloke Ant.
But the truth now, are you expecting us to believe the Landcruiser will be a support vehicle for the bikes?
More like the bikes will be support vehicles for the old Sahara :)

Is that what you call "black spot" ?
I wonder what the secret is to catching prawns up that way, and whether there are certain months that they congregate in the rivers?
We've never had any luck while cast netting for bait.
There's no way that I'm going in the water at night time, with a prawn lamp & net :o

Only going on the name in the Qld fishing book,Probably the nicest eating fish we caught, They are a member of the parrot fish family.
Have you tried Maori Wrasse Campdog? They, and small reef fish are my favourites for eating. Barracuda stays together nicely when cooking.

Thanks Xina,
I've always said that even a BAD trip to Cape York is better than being at home !!
Hopefully the sky is clear, and the fish are on the bite !!
Also, when I get back, I'll find the time to post some updates on what's happening up that way (fuel prices, new black top sections etc), and also organise some of the photo's from yester-year up in the Cape.
Managed to find numerous Wenlock River shots pre-bridge, and some of the old 1-vehicle punt across the Jardine. Also some good ones of the Vrilya Point beached Lightship from 20 years ago. Still looking for some shots of the Croc Shop when it was located on the Wenlock River & Jardine River. Might have to see if I can drag some off some of our old trip video's.
I've also got some good shots of the damaged PDR in 2006 following the 2 big cyclones that had ripped through the Cape. They clearly show that city slicker architects are no match for mother nature !!!
