Welcome to Cape Yorker Magazine's Forums. We're just kicking off so bear with us for a while. Hopefully in the coming months we can provide a valuable source of information.

Feel free to throw up a question or offer some tips about all things Cape York.

Cheers

This forum is a great idea and given the amount of information travellers seek regarding this area (me included), hopefully it should take off and be a great source of information. Good luck with it.

We're madly trying to finish our next issue of Cape Yorker Magazine so there probably won't be a great deal of activity on this board until we get around to promoting it.

Come April/May we will also be launching a regular newspaper version of Cape Yorker - reader's stories on 4wdriving, hunting, fishing and nature, plus and a little local news. So hopefully the board will grow to be a useful resource for people like yourself.

Cheers

HI Scorcher,
Yeah mate- finally got rid of the idiot. It seems like the busier this site gets, the more we are going to be hit by spammers. Really gives me the sh*ts.

And, from what I've seen, it seems it happens on Long Weekends, when Ant is away fishing somewhere??

Low blow!!!
I was actually in Bris at the Tinnie and Tackle show for the other publication I work for. I have not had a weekend off for a very long time and it is all for the love of Cape Yorker.

I knew that you would be "out-and-about" doing something on a long weekend.

You can't be expected to spend all-day, every-day, on the computor.

As I said, it's funny that the last 2 incidents (to my memory, anyway), occurred on Long Weekends (Easter then Anzac wasn't it ?). Maybe aimed at maximising exposure??

And when all we got when we logged in was something to do with the website exceeding it's bandwidth (?), withdrawal symptoms started to set in.

Which I suppose begs the question. Are you the only Moderator, who has access to the website to delete idiots who hack in?

Damn, I was at the show on Saturday arvo.
I would have dropped by and said hello had I known you were there.

Are you coming down for the June (?) show?
Let us know if you are, unless of course you intend travelling incognito :)

Nedly,
Didn't have much time to spare down there- sorry. I think that I may take out a stand at next years show though.

As for my next trip south- the only one I have planned is the AFTA trade show on the Gold Coast in August.

I can't believe I am heading south and not north!!

My name is Abhi and I got introduced to the site by my good friend ant. I have longed to be a 4 wheel drive enthusiast for a while now and to my luck I have the perfect job in the world. I am a teacher in Maningrida which located in the west Arnhem land and I go out every week teaching the kids at the homelands. It takes about 11/2 drive to get to the school every week and I have to go through some of the best dirt roads, river crossing, creek crossings and gravel roads. In addition, the job provides me with a new v8 troopie makes the drive more fun and interesting. so here I am with a sense of accomplishment with teaching the remote community children and learning to drive through one the best landscapes in Australia.

Welcome Abhi, the more on here the better. After all a fellow V8 Troopy driver can't be too bad?

G'day Abhi,

Perhaps I'll get over there one day and say hello, I keep promising Ant I'll show up.
Welcome to the forum, enjoy the read and the use of the Troopie.
As much as it pains me to say, they really are a good vehicle.

It hurts me to say this, but I am not a fan of the new V8.
The conflicting wheel base has its issues and so does the fact that we regularly have to replace the starter motors due to water crossings.

Apparently, Toyota will not cover a vehicle that goes through water any deeper than 700mm.

Now, my 60 series has been through far worse and is still going fine.

Glen have you found this problem with yours?

The difference in wheel track has not been noticeable at all. I had it in high range 4WD second gear with both lockers engaged for over 3 hours coming out of Santa Rosa NP (between Tambo and Springsure) after at least 50mm of rain overnight in blacksoil country. It was approx. 55km to the Springsure Tambo road junction and during that time I was only able to stop for a rest on the top of cattle grids for fear of getting stranded. It was then a further 60odd km in conditions not quite as bad to Springsure. If the difference in track was a problem it would have reared it's head then.
Heading east out of the Pascoe crossing on Frenchmans the car crabbed sideways and clipped the rear Kaymar bar on the bank but I feel that any car would have done that in those conditions? All other vehicles winched up that section.

I have heard of the starter drama but as yet have not experienced it. In Nolans the water was sloshing over the bonnet and into the intercooler scoop with no problems, I did apply extra sealant to the dust snorkel as insurance. I also made sure the turbo was not stinking hot before I quenched it in the cool water. With only just over 20000km on the clock it is early days yet

I have fitted higher breathers for the crossing but realistically my driveline warranty is null & void due to the fitting of the lockers

The best part is the V8 has heaps more grunt than the old 1HZ I had and is more economical! I'm happy with that, thanks for the investment allowance K Rudd

PS the Cooper STT rubber and 100 series wheels are up for sale, they were good offroad but pigs on the blacktop

Probably not the best sales pitch there Glen.
I'm currently running AT's, got the Maxxis sitting under a tarp for similar reasons.
The Maxxis are in reserve for the next tag-along.

Just to clarify, I found them reasonable on road but were getting chewed apart.
I'm using the truck as my daily drive at the moment so AT's seemed a reasonable investment.

Welcome aboard Kev.

Like Glen, I'm not a local, but am currently on a similar latitude at least.
There's heaps of info on this site, have a look around and I'm sure you'll find everything you need to know.
If not, just ask, one of us Cape York tragics should be able to steer you in the right direction.
Cape York is a great place and I'm sure you will enjoy yourself.
Take it easy and allow time to smell the roses, so to speak.

Now I remember you Kev, sorry to hear about the bike accident mate. It's bound to happen from time to time. I was silly enough to ride a Postie Bike to the Cape a few years ago
I can't keep away from the bikes, the garage is filling quickly

Enjoy the trip
